Didn't realise you were the depression police it's my opinion I'm entitled to it just like you are with yours it's called freedom of speech , look that one up and educate yourself It is your opinion and as such you are confirming that you are totally ignorant of both conditions. It would be a good idea to do a bit of research, before you start gobbing off on subjects you know nothing about. Making yourself look a proper tit. Just my opinion like.

That's what free speech is all about ( opinions) and your welcome to yours as I am to mine Your original post wasn't actually that bad but your follow up posts have confirmed what the first suggested, that you are a complete fucking whopper. For what it's worth you can shove your useless opinion up your arse, this isn't like asking what films you like or some other comparatively pointless discussion, this is a thread discussing mental-illness and your astounding ignorance is insulting.

That's what free speech is all about ( opinions) and your welcome to yours as I am to mine There's a pretty big difference between having an opinion and denying a fact. Mental illness is not a 'bandwagon' and it's incredibly insulting to suggest that it is. Would you take the piss out of someone with a broken leg and tell them they just need to walk it off?

I suppose when he was shagging prostitutes and his wife found out his lawyer said , ok Wayne let's jump on the depression bandwagon that will get you out of a deep hole , and starting drinking abit more to Chronic depression and anxiety can result in this type of self-destructive behaviour. You're making yourself sound a bit of a tit...

Rememember 1 in 4 of us will suffer from a mental/anxiety disorder at some point in our lives. Both illnesses have the potential for a fatal outcome. Good luck.

If it is depression then he obviously needs help. The alcoholism thing isn't news, he's had that reputation for a while and with some justification. As an alcoholic, he needs help also. Yep.

Is depression really 'about' anything? Everyone has something to be depressed about if they look for it. Even Rooney.

I bet if you formulated a study into depression and mental illness amongst professional footballers you'd come up with some alarming statistics, given what's already been pointed out, 1 in 4 of us will suffer some form of mental illness in our lifetime, transfer that into how many professional footballers there are and that's quite an alarming figure.
Also if you're using that statistic, two of our starting eleven are suffering mentally in some way, I'll go for Pieters and Glen Johnson, Pieters because he's Erik fucking Pieters and Johnson because you've got to have some imbalance going on up there to steal a bog seat when you're earning the wages he does.

Battled with depression my whole life..as did my mum. Ive been sent spiraling into despair for months on end when things have been going perfect. No amount of money can pick you up when youre right down there. IF these rumours are true I wish Wayne well and hope he gets all the help needed. I know exactly what you mean.... It's crippling when logically my circumstances at the time would preclude that it shouldn't! And agree with your sentiment!

Thought i was invincible when i was in my 20's. Life was good, healthy in body and mind. Now in my mid 40's and sometimes i hate getting out of bed. Got a good job, great girlfriend, great friends. But when it grips me, it's vice like and there's nothing i can do about it. The hours i've spent asleep so i don't have to think about it are frightening.
If i live to be 80 i've got around half of my life to deal with this. I was out one night this year with my friends in Newcastle and they had no idea of the despair i was feeling. It was probably the alcohol but i felt for the first time in my life that i'd be better off out of here. Thankfully fully sobered up i knew it was a daft thing to think about but it still scared me that i'd even considered it.
Thank God that most of us appreciate what a horrible thing it is.

Fucking hell, I do sometimes question whether we've got the most ignorant, shit-for-brains fanbase in the entire country. Once I open the Everything Else board then yep, I can safely say that we have.
Well done everyone.

This is completely amaetur, nowhere near conclusive and lacks a shit stack of validity; but I'm just finishing up a research project at University about mental health in sports. I can't really be arsed to type it all out (again) but after sampling 400 or so people (200 who are active members of University sports societies, 200 who aren't), the number of students who play sports who suffer from or have suffered in the past are almost double that of students who don't play anything. A lot of the people said they use their sport, and the society, and sense of belonging and meaning it brings as a coping mechanism, basically just a way to not feel so worthless or down about themselves. Sometimes it even becomes obsessive, like one of my really close friends who takes his sport to the extreme as a way to dodge his emotional issues. I'm sure someone much smarter and qualified than me has done a study on exactly what I did, so I'll just feign surprise when asked by my course. But yeah, my point being that football is REALLY not exempt from depression. It REALLY, REALLY isn't.

We've seen great players like maradona himself falling prey to this situation. I think it's a mix of a number of factors - the realization that perhaps your career is on the wane, the complete bafflement with all the money you're getting paid not knowing what the hell you can do with such an enormous mountain of dish, perhaps the realization that in fact you should not be earning so much whilst thousands of hard-working people struggle to grind out a living, above all the feeling of being trapped in a golden cage knowing that if you decide to spend your money stupidly your name will be splashed all over the media so you have all that money and yet cannot do what the hell you like with it
