That he is suffering depression and alcoholism.
IF true let's hope he gets the help he needs , nobody deserves to suffer depression, of course it could all be a load of rubbish !!

Seemingly got the world at his feet, more money that you could shake a stick at, lovely family, seemingly fit, but I guess he just can't handle the fact that his illustrious career is seemingly on the slide, and lets face it, he aint no spring chicken anymore, either way lets hope he gets over it...

If it's true and he is suffering depression that could be the reason his career is fizzling out as opposed to vice versa.

Very sad of course if true. But hey if anyone had been plagued by thoughts of that granny for years and been a traitor to his " beloved ? " Everton ( Quote "Once a blue always a blue " ) and kissing the shit badge after scoring against them ? I do really feel sorry for him.

If it is depression then he obviously needs help.
The alcoholism thing isn't news, he's had that reputation for a while and with some justification.

I need to get him out of my dream team. Only put him in because hes a media darling.
Until his latest spell out of the team he was one of the top scoring forwards despite being utter shite all season.

What a shame. After he scored that hat trick for us against Brighton on the last day of 05/06 I thought he was going to go on to be a superstar.

If it is true then it is another example that the disease knows no boundaries. On the surface he is a down to earth bloke in touch with his roots who has a smashing family with all the support and comfort that brings. Hopefully it's just the Internet putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with the wrong answer.

Drink and depression are a toxic mix, knock the drinking on the head for starters. He's in the fortunate position to have money to pay for help........assuming it's true of course.

He has not been the same sine Anne Kirkbride, AKA Deirdree Barlow, passed away earlier this year. Must have been a massive blow to him.

If this is actually true the level of drinking must be pretty bad because it doesn’t get into the media if it’s just a couple of weeks on the booze, I just hope there is somebody the lad trusts who can get through to him.

I don't know what he's got to be depressed about. Whilst environmental and circumstantial factors can certainly contribute to episodes of the disease, my understanding is that depression is a result of chemical imbalances in the brain and that certain people are more vulnerable to suffering than others. Therefore, for higher risk people it doesn't matter how great and successful their life appears to be, they are still highly likely to be struck down at some point or another. It's why so many suicides are completely shocking. If suicide and life-circumstances were strongly correlated in a predictable way then it'd be pretty simple to prevent but that's clearly not the case.

I was off work with depression myself. There are lots of people who are in far worse position than Rooney. He needs to stay off the sherberts because alcoholism leads to depression, not the other way around.

I must admit I love the way some unfounded rumour appears on Twitter and 10 minutes later we have set in in a historic context, done the whole problem diagnosis, added in a splash of empathy, run a root cause analysis and evaluated the next steps for him on his road to recovery! For all we know all that has happened is he had to attend a 1:1 meeting with Louis van Gaal and he thought the best way to get through that with a minimum of angst was to throw down a couple of stiff drinks first. That is what I would do if I had to meet that pug faced Dutchman on my own

People think depression is a one off occurrence, but it can hit you even when you are "in a good place" for the rest of your life. As said above even so called successful (in all walk of life) people suffer greatly from it.

If you suffered like you said you do, you would have a greater understanding and be more sympathetic towards other who suffer, as a lot of people have no control over it.

Depression plus alcohol abuse is really bad news. One feeds the other. I suspect a lot of problem drinkers are suffering undiagnosed depression. If anyone here is struggling, go and tell your doctor now. Don't be defined by what has gone before - there is a way back.
