Just been having my brekkie and was thinking about the old chestnut of potential new transfers.....here we go you're all thinking.
BUT with yesterdays showing of quality posession and pass and move, PLUS the semis of the league cup, surely to god the fabled ' next level' of player would sit up and take notice....
Them shytehawks that are the agents will be sniffing around obviously, but this could play into our hands in terms of Leslie being in a position of being able to negotiate harder to get the exact player he wants for a particular position.
Along the lines of " Look what we're trying to do here - prove to US that you can ADD to that" type of thing
Then again, would he really consider upsetting the balance of the squad, which I reckon is pretty good at the moment
Its a toughie...
Thoughts??

For the first time in a long time (if ever, in fact) I wouldn't be arsed if we made no January signings. I still think we could do with a CB at some point, god forbid we're without Ryan for any length of time again. Possible wing cover and CM cover would be nice too, but then the argument comes in that we should only sign players who would be challenging for starting positions, and as you quite rightly point out, the balance is there now and things are finally starting to click.

All about keeping this squad of players that have been assembled over the last 2.5 years. If we can keep them and add one young player each window to replace our older players then this is a brilliant squad and possibly as good as we will ever grt

I'm with you not fussed about new players atm, this is where it becomes difficult keeping ALL the squad players happy.

If yarmolenko is still an option I wouldn't mind him coming in but otherwise I'm very happy with what we have

This squad was obviously going places. As I said in earlier posts, patience is needed. I believe yesterday was the beginning of a great period in Stoke's history, and also that players will want to play here. Yesterday was truly wonderful, and long term, things can surely get better.

To be honest, the only position we need to strengthen in the starting 11 is CM.
I'd be more than happy for us to just sign a couple of exciting youngsters.

No we DO need a third option with strength, pace and skill who can play on either wing. If Shaq or Arnie get injured or suspended we really don't have anyone in the squad to can play in their place(s) in the formation we played yesterday. Moha isn't ready yet, Diouf has pace but not the skill set for the wing and Walters (who has many good points) can't be regarded as like for like cover for Arnie or Shaq. Two more specialist wide players would be nice, but someone who can play both left and/or right would do nicely.

I think we've got quite a few already;
Butland, Johnson, Shawcross, Shaqiri and Bojan definitely
Muniesa, Arnautovic and Pieters possibly
Whelan is interesting, theoretically he isn't a next level player but he has proved himself consistent and reliable at this level when I at least didn't think he was good enough - so definitely worth giving him a chance.
Not next level, atm, Wollschield, Adam, Diouf, Walters
Obviously the bench/25 would need upgrading, but some of that comes from replacing Wolly etc and them moving to the bench to replace our current bench

Yeah what I meant was CM is probably our weakest position atm. The rest of our starting 11 is probably top 6/7 standard. So if we were to sign a new player for our starting 11, it would be in CM. Not to bothered if we don't sign anyone there though.

Hughesy will know what to do, I'm just going to enjoy watching him do it.
Can't wait for Saturday even if we don't go 433 or whatever sorcery that was yesterday... :-)

Kiev are very likely to go through to the knock out stages of the Champions League, not a chance in hell they'll let Yarmolenko go now. Anyway, we need to keep the partnership of Shaq & Arnie together. IF we bring someone in as wing cover they ideally need to be players who don't mind playing second fiddle and is that the kind of player we want? unless they are young with potential, I think not.
As a couple have already said, I'm genuinely not arsed if no business was done at all. It's all about growing this team and squad imo.

Disagree with most on here, strengthen when you are strong and Hughes will know the next Shaq Bojan or Arnie and I am sure he will go out and sign them. Maybe not in January but Yarm would be a nonsense not to sign him if available

We're in a great place at the moment and we've got where we are by doing some good business and buying players that other "bigger" clubs weren't prepared to take a risk on. Sadly money talks and sooner or later the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool will come sniffing because they cant find there own players and will throw money around like it's going out of fashion. Its a shame that football clubs aren't rewarded for good sensible business but how much money your chairmans got but I guess we have to live with that and operate the way we are at the moment by buying promising youngsters for the future and outstanding players who appear to have lost there way.
For me the sort of players we should be looking at are the likes of Pato (very good technical player with a touch of magic) and the lads from Argentina and Sweden we've been linked too. They wont all come off but some definitely will.
In respect to postions that need strengthening for me we will only need to do that if we lose players by long term injury or from selling them.
At the moment the only positions that could possibly need strengthening are DM though after yesterday it just doesn't seem as big an issue or cover on the wing where we could do with more pace should Shaq or Arni get injured.
I think it's equally important that we offload players if we're not using them even on loan to maintain there match fitness. Odom, Crouch, Sidwell, Shenton, Ireland and Wilson could fall under this.

I believe his former Munich team mate Thomas Muller was particularly gutted to miss out when Jon Walters signed a new contract

Strangely they are complimenting each other well.

Wouldn't worry about the next level at the moment.
I would worry about keeping these World Class players (and some of them are!) and just as importantly, keeping Mark Hughes at Stoke City Football Club.

We just need to keep being sensible, getting players in below there actual value (even Shaqiri should have cost more in my opinion). Yes we will have the vultures around, but new players will have seen Nzonzi and Begovic move on for Champion's League football and the current lot resurrecting their careers under Hughes and surely think to themselves it beats sitting on a bench at the so called bug clubs. (Unless they're solely interested in the money, then we probably don't want then anyway) What is probably vital is we keep in mind Hughes could leave and are always spying on other managers so when that sad day comes we have a list of people who can come in and do the business, not some smug bastard in a sleeveless jacket for example

Resign NZonzi who would return a better man for his short stay in Spain.
