..heck did they do get in Saprky's doghouse? I wish someone would ask him in an interview or a press conference.

Muniesa looks lost without Shawcross and Bojan happened to Ireland. Don't think there's much more to it than that.

Thought Ireland was unlucky not to get on at Villa though. The situation seemed tailor made for him to come on for Bojan.

7 points out of 9 says he's made the right call these last few weeks. I like Ireland and Muniesa but if we keep winning then they'll have to bide their time.......

Muni was really struggling. We know he's got a shit load of potential, but he needed dropping.

Why if somebody does not get picked is there a conspiracy all of a sudden welcome to the squad rotation system of modern football.

I don't get what people see in muniesa. He's like a child chasing the ball round the pitch leaving gaps behind him.

I don't get what people see in muniesa. He's like a child chasing the ball round the pitch leaving gaps behind him. That's a tad harsh, BSR, but only a tad. A good defender does not need an excellent defender by the side of him telling him what to do all the time. He knows instinctively himself due to an inate ability to read the game. I still think that, if Muni is to have a long-term future with Stoke, it is in Whelan's role. He can tackle robustly, is decent in possession, has a great work ethic and will not be faced by either pacey or burly strikers, neither of which he is best placed to mark. He can sit in, cover, tidy up and release the playmakers in front of him. We really should try it sometime. Ireland should have surely had more minutes than he has so far - especially after his Spurs sub showing. That Afellay came on for Bojan ahead of him struck me as bizarre.

Perhaps Hughes was unsure how much longer Arnie would last so put in a versatile player so as to keep his substitute options available as the game progressed. It worked well because it allowed van ginkel to come on to see the game out with affellay moving wide.

Maybe mate, as you say it all worked out in the long run but at the time I thought Ireland would use the ball better when we hit them on the break.

While I agree with that, I don't understand why Ireland isn't the one who comes on when Bojan has to go off. Seems the obvious replacement to me and would have made far more sense IMHO in the Bournemouth game particularly.

I think that Ireland's poor showing at Fulham is part of what has caused his slide down the pecking order. Not that Affelay has even had the half hour that Ireland had at Spurs. Ireland is a conundrum.Bags of talent, but makes Arnie look like the model of consistency.

Muni made one mistake vs Arsenal and has paid the price.
Ireland-no idea.
He should have played a load more when Bojan wasn't fit.

Muniesa looks lost without Shawcross and Bojan happened to Ireland. Don't think there's much more to it than that. Ireland wasn't really playing when Bojan was out though (and he should have been). His first appearance was at Spurs. Which we all thought would lead to a start at Norwich.......it didn't. He started vs Luton, set up the goal.........started on the bench in the next Premier League game where he should have started for either of the two sent off. And then 2 more league sub appearances. And a start vs Fulham (no idea how he did).

He was one of the least shit vs Luton I thought and there was way more that deserved a dropping from that shower and his assist was stunning. The Spurs game should have been enough to start as trying Afellay and/or Adam there with MVG behind them just wasn't working.

They're having to slowly ween Muniesa off protein shakes and 'roids. Ireland's too flimsy and no matter how they try to disguise them in his Sushi Shark he just wunner have 'em.
Mark Hughes picks his teams on thigh size. {I've heard he's currently debating whether Shaq's count: are they just elongated maximuses.}

The thing is Muniesa is still young a learning. Yes he looks excellent when alongside Ryan rather than alongside Wilson/Cameron/Wollscheid but there is still plenty of time to develop that side of his game.
Look at John Stones. Mistakes in him every single game but there is £40 odd million being thrown at the lad.
If Muniesa was the finished article, Barca would not be allowing him to join Stoke City on a free transfer. The potential is most certainly there and come his mid 20s I fully anticipate Muniesa will develop into a top quality centre half and be called into he Spain squad.
Patience boys.

While he can play a bit Ireland looks too light weight to me and longer term Muni needs to make a position his own that suits his undoubted ability that is not center back which requires someone more commanding.

I don't understand the Ireland nonsense one bit. For his first season here he was virtually undroppable through some very ropey performances whilst others were seemingly picked on merit.
This season he has deserved a start in the league on the back of his performance at Spurs, which was arguably one of his best performances for us, and we've been like ships in the night ever since.
Bizarre isn't the word.

Cameron's 'stonewall penalty' didn't lead to a penalty either. It hasn't stopped you slating him for it in around 9,472 posts the last few days. Muniesa is dodgy without Shawcross helping him out, thankfully the manager has finally seen it & decided to play a proper defender in his place... And it's brought us two victories out of two.

Because that is a massive mistake, Muniesa wasn't making them. A proper defender my arris, he's the shortest 6ft 5" bloke in the world, Muni is better in the air than him.

This idea that Muniesa should be moved up to DM alongside Whelan (the same is true of Cameron) has come up over and over for the past year. Certainly, in the case of Muniesa, I don't believe there's much evidence that he wants to play there or that he'd be any good at it. You would think Sparky would have tried it out in pre-season or in the League Cup, but there's a lot of things that Sparky should have done in pre-season. Opportunities missed to try things out. Instead he's experimented when it mattered (e.g. Arsenal away) and it bit him in the arse.

In Ireland's case surely his performance at Spurs warranted another game at least comingoff the bench. It's a total mystery.
