According to Danny Higginbotham on talk sport at the minute, the lack of character and ability to dig in and grind out a result, is the main reason British teams are struggling in European competition.
British teams have lost their mentality and identity.
Nowt to do with ability. It's all about the DNA

If the Champions League was knock out, possibly over two legs you'd see more teams busting a gut to win. All this fannying around with four team round robin mini leagues is rubbish.

Eh up. It's a lack of leaders now.
It all sounds very familiar

This is the same Danny Higginbotham who won everything in the game, including the Champions League. NOT. Another of the amazing pundits who claim to know everything when they stop playing but achieved very little when they were playing and now opts for the easy route of pundit, rather than prove he knows everything by going into management. I'm afraid he's turned into a right little know it all. File him and 99% of all pundits in the shitbin.

English teams have lost their English players. They weren't exactly chock-full of them when they were dominating the competition were they?

I like Danny but he's in danger of becoming just another cliched pundit.
He was a breath of fresh air initially but seems to be starting to head down a very well trodden path of late.

The funniest thing was he mentioned this and then used Liverpool's win as an example of British players showing that grit he referred to. He moved on quickly when it was pointed out to him that the only British players in the Liverpool Lin up that day were Gerrard, carragher and Steve finnan. Idiot!

I think lack of leaders are a massive issue with three of our four Champions League side.
Arsenal - no leaders Man Utd - no leaders Chelsea (without Terry) - no leaders
The level of influence this has I'm not sure but they all lack genuine characters and has been hampering Arsenal since Viera left.

Shit defenders is the problem, simple as that.
You can finish top 4 in this league every year with a half arsed defense so long as your front men are shit hot, and they will be because every other team in the league has a shit defense.
Only when you come up against decent defenders from Spain, Italy and Germany do the forward lines get found out and goals dry up. At that point, the defenders need to stop goals and we don't have a team in England that are currently doing that.

Not old enough to remember stoke anywhere near the top division until 2007/2008. But I do remember almost everything from the late 80s onwards. Danny Higginbotham is second only to Tony Pulis in getting us where we are today. DH played out of his skin 06/07 making him worth £3M to Sunderland. This money got reinvested in the team 07/08 (Shawcross, Cort, nimlumerous loan signings) and we got promoted and bought him back the next season for the same price. He then went on to establish us in the Prem under TP. Higginbothams career was defines by what he achieved at Stoke under TP. So in some ways its obvious why he isnt popular on this board. He may well not have 'won everything in the game' but he has a perspective on football that is deeply rooted in a very proud and successful era of the history of SCFC. When I hear Danny talk it makes me nostalgic for those days. I'm happy we have evolved from then - we have scope to develop now as a club that we could not have dreamed of under Pulis. However respect is due for DH and TP for what they achieved in their time and I fully understand where he is coming from. If you dont get that then the last 10 years of SCFC history has gone whoosh right over your head and you cant truly appreciate where we are now. Just my opinion

That supposes that there is just one way to play football though, Rob. He seems to like a cage like set up and although that's not to everyone's tastes it's a perfectly reasonable point of view. On leaders I agree with him. We haven't got one other than the Captain and it's unforgivable that a club like Man Utd hasn't got one. Can you see anyone in their squad doing what Keane did against Juventus in the semi final all those years back? No one remotely near and it's holding them back.

If anyone's guilty of suggesting there's only one way to play football it's Higgy, who cites 'fight' and 'leaders' and sticking men behind the ball and hitting the big man as the solution to everyone's problems from Stoke to Man Utd to England.

A lack of leaders is a big problem for the top English clubs. Unfortunately it also seems to be a problem for us too.

Chelsea didn't seem short of leaders last season. Their problems have been failing to properly strengthen and their biggest 'leader' trying to throw everyone else under the bus rather than look in the mirror.
There's a case Man Utd don't have any leaders at the back, they've got plenty elsewhere. Their problems are tactical from what I can see.
Arsenal have always struggled for leaders since Vieira left.
Citeh have a couple of leaders but do seem a bit of a soft touch at times.
Higgy would blame anything from getting caught in a rainstorm to someone spilling his pint on a lack of leaders.

So a few more things on this, having read his article in the Independent today.
1) He talks about English teams losing their ability to come from behind. Erm, didn't that happen twice in the week?
2) He talks about the importance of English players in CL winning sides and highlights Liverpool (three British players) and Chelsea (four) as examples. It seems lost on him that this means eight and seven of the players in those teams were dastardly, cowardly foreigns.
3) If English players are so important to success in international competitions, should we all lump on Roy's boys at the Euros?

You dont dispute the importance of a strong dressing room and leaders on the pitch though surely Chief? This is all he seems to be getting from that summary.

If character and the ability to dig in are the same as discipline, then yes we are definitely missing it. Defending we are like a group of school kids frightened by a mouse.
