I'm not saying there aren't teething problems or that everything's hunky dory but it's way too early to start using words like 'defining' or crying because we're in the bottom three.
Why there's a need to paint things as being worse than they are is beyond me, especially given the OP's previous tolerance of much, much worse.

I'm with Chief on this. Absolutely no reason to panic. The season is only "defined" after 38 games. I've followed Stoke City for over 40 years, and only a couple of things have been consistent over that time. We sometimes lose games I think we're going to win and we sometimes win games I think we're going to lose. Yet again we've dropped points early doors at home which is frustrating, but any point on the road in this league is a good one. One thing I'm fairly sure of. Mark Hughes won't be going into this game expecting us to lose. Just doesn't seem to be in his make-up and I think he's influenced the players with his philosophy. He'll have a plan - Arsenal play fairly narrow, so I would expect 2 sitters in front of the back 4 and a fairly compact set up. What we must do is really be brave and commit to our chances when they arise. If we can break from change in possession I think our pace and movement up front can cause them some problems. As ever, the 2 midfielders with Glenn will be interesting and I hope Diouf can play. His energy and speed would be suited to this match. Great game for us on Saturday. Arsenal away. I went on a bus from The Vic for a League Cup game about 30 years ago. We battled hard and Scott Barratt saved a penalty, but we still lost 3-1. It was a once in a blue moon game then. Now we go every season. Who would have thought that a few years ago. Bring it on and COME ON STOKE! I was at that game I think, I have a feeling Steve Bould and Lee Dixon may have been in defence for us and Arsenal nicked them both the following summer, does that sound right?

The problem with been in the bottom three is every game is a pressure game,if we do lose to the Arse on Saturday the next two home games will be difficult .The crowd needs to be patient, but we know it won't if we go a goal down.So we as fans need to allow the players to play and not get on there backs.

I don't expect us to win at Arsenal but if we can get a draw against them it will set us up nicely with 2 home games against Leicester and Bournemouth to come. We will be ok. Keep the faith

We have had a relatively poor start but the players have the opportunity to put it right. There's no point in sitting back at Arsenal. If MH picks the right formation I fancy us getting something, It's a funny old game

Must have been about 86/87? so maybe so. Foxy must have been injured and a lad called Scott Barratt played in the nets. The more I think about it, the more I think we didn't actually score and it finished 3-0. The pen save must have been after an hour or so and I think it was goalless at that time, and I remember thinking could we get something here? Nope. Bumped into a few London based Stokies that I knew on the Clock End that night.
We probably will lose on Saturday, but I thought we would probably beat West Brom. With Stoke though, you just never know...

Yes now you say that I am pretty sure it was 3-0, definitely a night game and we were on the Clock End too. This seems to be it: 1987/88 - Littlewoods Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg - Gillingham (h) 2-0 2nd Round 2nd Leg - Gillingham (a) 1-0 (won 3-0 on aggregate) 3rd Round - Norwich City (h) 2-1 4th Round - Arsenal (a) 0-3 That almost constituted a great cup run by the standards of the day!!

Everyone under 18 will moan and swear and use phrases such as "FFS".
Everyone over 25 will realise that the season is a marathon not a spring and probably not get too upset.
Everyone over 65 will still be struggling to log on to the board.

Even if we are bottom after Saturday we don't feel like a team in crisis unlike a Newcastle or Sunderland. I feel panic could set in if we get less than 4 points in the 2 games after.
When you look at our games so far all were close and could have gone either way. None of our games have we been blown away.
Liverpool - a draw would have been fair but for a wonder goal.
Spurs - great comeback could have won at the end.
Norwich - poor performance and a lucky point.
WBA - Still angry now. Convinced we'd have won but for the refs intervention and to an extent nativity from 2 of our players.

I'm not going to get worried at such an early stage of the season.

Wouldn't be surprised if its some of our older posters which are the biggest melts on here to be honest, 30s and 40s I think would be the dickiest age group. Also as a member of the oatcake community between the age of 18 and 25, I have no opinion on being in the bottom 3

Hahaa, not that I'd ever class you as a bellyacher Gods! Many on here are ST holders I'm guessing so they have the same group of characters around them but for me, I go to a handful of games a season and of course end up next to totally different people each time. The majority of the bellenduous (new word) types I have found to be middle aged, people that would still be loudly chatting about how wank Diouf is if he scored a hat trick and we were up 10-0. Just my experience though.

Yeah and once they get past middle age they start chilling again, they have other concerns over and above the result, will the toilet work on the concourse and will they be home in time for a mug of horlicks in front of Strictly Come Dancing ?!

I know it's well meant but that's the issue if we do go bottom
We are a bottom team with good reason and we need to face it , to simply say we are too good to be bottom is to invite distaster.
My view if we go bottom is we may well stay there for months not weeks on the basis of what I've seen so far .

We're 11/1 to win at Arsenal. Lucky to get a point at Norwich, battled to get a point and almost 3 at Spurs, lost to a late goal at home to Liverpool and self imploded at home to the Baggies with 2 stupid and needles actions, especially by Charlie. We are missing our ESTABLISHED central defensive partnership, which isn't coming back. As ffor possibly going bottom on Saturday, it won't be that bad, but what will be bad is if we get another bad run of injuries then we could well be doomed

No doubt a few on here will got into meltdown if we go bottom.....for those that are on the verge already and busy preparing themselves for doomsday ...for gods sake "man up " and remember "we are stoke" ...Hughes has introduced a lot of new players into the team and it's going to take time for them to click...plus we're still missing a few through injury ....so how's about we give the new boys a chance to learn how to work together and then they'll shine ....the best thing we can do is show'em we're behind them and sing our hearts out every game !! ........

I don't think we'll be bottom by Tuesday. i can see Sunderland and Newcastle losing by more than one goal, which will put us back where we were. Anyhow, just like goals, league places are irrelevant.
