"Is this the same Stoke who just lost at home, failed to score and only had one shot on target in the whole game? Or was it the Stoke who recently sold their 2 best players, lost as many games as Sunderland last season and dropped 5 points to us? Whichever it was I wouldn't say they were 'miles ahead' of Sunderland" Some fair comments on that thread but this pipe always seems to pop up when stoke is mentioned and always tries his hardest shoot us down. From United's board... "Stoke have been consistently spending large amounts of money for the last few seasons so it's not as strange a transfer as it first seems" Do they know something that I've missed??? Quite flattering really. Can't expect a man Utd fan to know the in's and outs of our signings. He's probably thought 'stoke have got a cracking team, that must have cost a few bob'

I love how when Ayew signed for Swansea. "Good signing". Wiljnaldum signs for Newcastle. "Top signing". West Ham sign payet "class signing. The West Ham way". Stoke sign Shaqiri. "What the hell. What a waste. What's he signed for that tinpot club for."

What is interesting on those boards is the general perception of things. What seems to be emerging is a feeling that Swansea, Southampton and Stoke (maybe Palace as well) represent a challenge to the old order. And I can see why they say that and I hope it remains that way.
Everton fans sounds like they have a huge sense of entitlement that is not being borne out. They can't believe that Shaqiri would choose us over them or Newcastle. I imagine something similar is being said on Newcastle boards and probably Villa as well, because it is those three clubs that have been displaced by Stoke, Swansea and Southampton.
Sunderland fans are just different class. They are suffering from collective manic depression, they've stopped talking about football at all and they are arguing over administrative definitions.
What I like most about it all, is the utter incredulity. So many posts say something like "Shaqiri has signed for ....Stoke! ...? ....WTF". Perhaps they don't see what is going on around them and that we are right in the mix in this new world order. We had to wipe the slate clean years ago and build from the bottom. So we have arrived with a plan, and a wealthy, astute owner, plus the right manager, coaching set-up, facilities and a scouting and recruitment set-up that (in hindsight) looks like a work of utter genius. It all has lead to this point where we have the the right players at a manageable net cost and we can afford to compete for marquee signings.
Meanwhile, back in the 1980s Everton, Villa, Sunderland et al are still going on about being big clubs - all that means is that they have to deal with being bloated and expensive clubs with a tenuous grasp on reality in the modern era.

Hello, Saints fan here. Never thought I'd see the day I'd make an account on oatcakefanzine but anyway..
thought this thread seemed like a good place for a 1st post
you had a very good season last season in my eyes. I imagine the atmosphere must be been epic for the spurs and liverpool game at the end of the season, nice to end on a high. Didn't start well to be fair, and if I'm honest I kind of wrote stoke off as having a fairly standard season.
But say turn of the year, thought stoke looked very decent. always liked arnautovich, and always hoped he'd prove himself a top quality forward.
Anyway, back on topic.
I felt the shaqiri transfer was an utter catch for you. Couldn't quite believe it happened - maybe just me being shallow - but I expected him to go to liverpool or maybe city if anywhere. What was very positive is that he actually rejected originally but was convinced by talking lots with hughes. It shows he actually buys in to the club and is happy to be there. I hear some people say 'shaqiri to stoke transfer shows the buying power of the premier league now', but I think that's a bollocks arguement in this case. I genuinely think he is really up for going to stoke above other, 'traditioanlly bigger' clubs. And that's encouraging for stoke city going forward. (pardon the pun, I suppose I mean literally going forward on the pitch as well.....)
As for the other transfers this summer, wollscheid I like, I think van Ginkel is exciting young prospect, and Glen Johnson is interesting. Be really interested to watch whether he's going to be decent for you. Apologies for the ignorance of your current team but.....do you think he'll be 1st choice?
I think the begovic transfer was interesting.....do stoke city fans feel OK with butland as number 1 ?
Stoke squad looking stronger than I've known it for a long time in my eyes, granted not followed you in detail for years and years, but wouldn't be surprised if you or palace pipped us for 8th this year.
all the best

Tony_Montana1981 (Sunderland Fan):
"Southampton, Stoke, Swansea, Everton, and Crystal Palace are all next level up from us now. I'd agree that the bottom 9 - you can pick 3 from for relegation.. but none of the 5 above are in the mix anymore. They are firmly in the level below the top 6/7. We are firmly in the bottom 8/9. I look at teams like Stoke and it frustrates me.. Joselu, Diouf, Bojan, Affelay, Shaquiri, even Arnoutovic.. all of them would walk into our side... Swansea have Ayew, Sigurdsson, Shelvey - and this is jsut 6 months after losing Bony. They are still so much stronger than we are. Palace with Bolasie, Puncheon, Zaha, Cabaye... It annoys me that we just cant seem to get it right, when these teams can."

Southampton have looked strong for the past two years, and I personally hope you keep on their current trajectory and are able to keep bloodying the noses of the 'big clubs'. Some very shrewd singings this summer! Shaq is so goddamn exciting - I have to remind myself every few mins that we've got him. Just to think that the whole of the PL was in disbelief when there was the 'serious' link back in Jan - really crazy. Glen looks as though he'll be first-choice RB. Had an excellent game on Sunday, and (hopefully) he'll continue in that vein. Most Stoke fans do feel like Butland was ready to step up - don't get me wrong, Bego was beyond fantastic for us, but he had had his head turn near the end of last season (and to be fair, his 14-15 season was not a vintage one - plenty of mistakes and lapses in concentration that may have cost us 6-12 points potentially). The jury is out on Jack, but I personally feel he'll be fantastic in the long run. All the best!

Johnson probably will be first choice. He's got bags of experience from a top club, and plenty of international call-ups. I'm confident we can get the best out of him, he was looking sharp in the Liverpool game. It was time for Begovic to go. If he'd left at the end of the 13/14 season I would have been devastated, and I think that everyone else would think we looked pretty fragile. After this season though, when he threw a bit of a tantrum, looked like he was starting to slip and with Butland putting in some good performances, I'm happy letting him go for £8m and using that money elsewhere like we have. Not a big loss and Butland will keep improving. The fight for 8th will be very interesting this year. Good luck to you too!

Albeit the odd bit silverware down the decades it's hard to see Everton as nothing more than a mid-table to a "JUST" above mid-table side........
So contrary to how their fans view their club, at this moment in time, they're no more appealing to a potential TOP signing than Stoke are!!!

"Obviously opinions are like arseholes, but he really isn't. In my eyes he is a hyped headless chicken with very little to no end product. He does one very neat technical piece of skill now and then, but other then that he contributes dick. It's a reason to why big clubs didn't want him. He had some talent and they hoped it would develop, but it didn't. Now they move him on to Stoke who probably think they've signed Ronaldo's cousin. Anyone creaming themselves over this player hasn't seen him play football. They probably saw a foreign name, big fee and a piece of technical skill at the corner flag. I'll go as far as claim this will be one of the biggest flops of the season." Read more: www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/shaqiri-to-stoke.1116298/page-4#ixzz3iXklRr8uHahaha No jealousy at all their! This type of crap is golden. Hughes should read this crap to Shaq and light an inferno under him, he'll be on an absolute mission to ram the doubters opinions down their throats...

I read an article on the Sunderland Echo (I think) website - they were saying Bardsley has been a really big loss. He's now our 2nd or 3rd choice right-back! It's amazing really.

Some of the Man Utd fans seem annoyingly sensible.... which is disappointing.... That's what having a newbie system does for you. This place could take note.

I'm surprised Everton fans are puzzled at what to do, it quite obvious really, they need a manager that knows what he's doing.
