Anyone going to the Stoke Beer Festival? What's it like at Fenton? Did you go Rog? I'm not a fan of it in Fenton. Me mates band Greg Murray Shed Band played on friday night. He preferred Kings Hall too, didn't stop him getting leathered. I didn't bother with it.

The abiding memory of one I did at the Kings many many moons ago was being involved in a doubles conker match whilst under the influence much to the bystanders alarm!

Attachment DeletedFubar (on the right) was a lovely hoppy pale ale with a right old pineapple finish. Very pleasant without being sweet. 4.4% Tiny Rebel Brewery ?? Matey behind the bar said it was Welsh I think. I didn't try the Welsh Gold but I noticed on the pump badge was the Alcohol Unit amount per pint. In this case 2 units it being 3.6%. I hadn't noticed that on a badge before. Government recommends 14 units a week so a pint a day (of 3.6%) will keep the doctor away

Attachment DeletedA new micro pub opened in 'Castle. Pepper Street opposite and just down from the Lymestone Vaults. Apparently the ale is brewed in Chesterton and the pub idea was after him and her were both made redundant. Bloody good luck to them I say. Their signature Weller Weal is an absolute corker! Hoppy and then some. A right citrus zing. Very quaffable. I think is was about 4.6% Wealy Hopper is another good one. They also have 'guest' beers on. The Weller thing is a homage to Paul Weller. So, some mod knick knacks are on show and the piped music is The Jam, The Style Council and the Modfather himself and very pleasant it was too. It's all naturally basic 'chic' with scaffolding planks for shelves but not in a pretentious way. All packets of snacks are a pound. No nonsense. Nice. Weal Ales

Top corresponding on this front Rog, much appreciated. Nothing much to report from me on the micros, been staying local, sticking with Pedigree. And Speckled Hen.
Possibility of a trip to Buxton to a craft Brewery. But been forewarned it's £6 per bottle, all big hitting 11+%s. Get head and wallet ache just contemplating it.

Yikes. £6 and 11% !
I'd nurse one for an hour or two and ask for a load of tasters in the meantime.
A well kept hand pull Pedi is a lovely pint. Speckled Hen's nice. Don't they do a slightly stronger hen?

Don't they do a slightly stronger hen? Apparently Buxton Tap House for the unleashing of their bottled ice cream flavoured range. mmmm not for me, I'm out, on that at least. Just had a scan on t'web, there's also a healthy range of draughts too, but a few £5 per pinters. I loved the original Old Speckled Hen, 5.2% or so, light and fairly psychedelic. The Bitter equivalent of Laughingbrau imo. They've reduced the gravity on draught {EU? } {though I seem to recall Bisph saying it may still be available in boozers Blackpool way.} I've not seen it, it's 4.5 or .6 now, nowhere near as tasty and punchy as I recall it, still a good enough drink when on song. There's bottled Old Golden Hen, which is 6%. {three for a fiver Co-op}. Came across Old Spooky Hen in Derby last month, disappointing that it wasn't a 'special' edition, just a re labelling. The Micro bloom is astounding, great to see. Wonder if/when the breweries will start buy outs and homogenizing. Or is that happening.

Golden Hen in bottles that was it.
The micro's seem to be independent up to now. Although the London Road and Bridge Street Ale houses have a connection I think.
I love places like Wellers. A Mr and Mrs joint who's sister was working when I passed by but she's really a nurse and just helping out! Her Mum came in with a bunch of bar towels she'd taken home and washed for them :-)
I don't think that people like this are looking to expand and franchise. No doubt they'll be a chain of Harvester micro pubs soon but the real charm is the odd, small batch beers which can't be authentically reproduced by big concerns.
Anyway, talking about Buxton I'm contemplating a Buxton Axe Edge pale at 6.8% and £5.10 or a Beavertown Gamma Ray at 5.4% and £4.90 or a Slaters Haka at 5.2% and £3.20..... :-)

Apparently. I predicted the rise of the shebeen with the smoking ban and pub prices, wasn't far wrong. It's great to see. Problem with Buxton boozing is it means the Buxton Flyer, and therefore day time/early quoffing. Can get messy when dealing with big boys beer.

I still need to give Wellers a go.
'The Pour House' is also due to open in Newcastle soon. It's hidden away up Market Lane (behind Revolution) but looking at the photos they've done a great job with the building.

Had a few Marstons New World the other night in The Windmill at Meir Heath, not bad at all to be fair, forget the numbers but it was pokey enough for me to have a bit of a burble on.

Marston's Old Empire IPA 5.7% seems to work quite well.

There's a great micro pub and bottle bar scene in Newcastle now. That new bar in the cinema complex is very impressive, much better than I was expecting.

The Abbot Reserve should be hitting the pumps soon too. Missed out last year. {It's a trip to the Post Office Vaults Boslem.}
Not a big fan of Titanic beers, Iceberg, Steerage etc, too hoppy/tangy but the Captain Smith's stout is fine. As are the Porters, only one or two though, a bit sweet for sustained quoffing imo.

I'm not keen on the lighter beers either. Too many fancy hop varieties for me.

Seen some names mentioned.. Is there a 5/6 micro pub tour of Newcastle possible?
I've been the Lymestones, and Bridge Street.
Not been to Wellers, Pour House... any others or suggestions for a mini winter wobble of good quoff houses round 'Castle.

Not been to Wellers, Pour House... any others or suggestions for a mini winter wobble of good quoff houses round 'Castle. There's a good real ale crawl around Newcastle now. We'd usually start at at the Bridge Steet Ale House then head across the road to the Hopwater Cellar (it's directly opposite, more a bottle shop but they have stuff on tap and you can drink in). Lymestone Vaults and Wellers are just up the road and next to one and other on Pepper Street. The Pour House opening has been delayed while they finish the building but hopefully a new date will be announced soon. Berts and Bar Social are worth a stop if you want something more continental with a bit of food. It's then a bit of a trek up Hassell Street but the Greyhound and the Hop Inn (just round the corner on Albert Street) are good final stops. If you're still going after that then it's all downhill on Basford Bank to the Holy Inadequate, then a taxi back to Newcastle for a curry.

I don't think I'd be heading back up Hartshill after doing a town tour. More likely do the Hop Inn, Alma, Museum etc and then drop into Town. But all grist to the mill. Cheeers.
