Nice one mate, funnily enough I've just returned from an Aldi booze cruise. I've recently changed allegiances regarding 'alcohol at home'. I was committed to Henry Weston's Vintage Cider but it became too much of a good thing so it's bottled real ale at the moment. Added a Brains' 'spill the beans' coffee porter {89p} and Harper's 'Wild Bill' American IPA to the usual suspects. I like trying something a bit different, the Damson Porters etc. Yeah Marston's have shown plenty of {cynical} savvy in embracing the Craft Ale revolution. Pretty much a Pub monopoly around here now. You're correct about the glass- the various beer 'marques' of Marston, no doubt they'll all feature as guest ales over the next few weeks. {RogerJones posted the new Pedi pump badge on the previous page.} I didn't realise Marston's had mopped up Morland, I new there were tie ins with Wytchwood, Ringwood, and gutted when they took over Thwaites' {Hollybush Denford}, havn't checked whether they've messed with 'Bomber' or the Wainwright range.. hope not. Still can't beat a good pint of Pedigree, even if they're becoming 'the enemy'. Chin chin. Earl Grey in Leek is brill at the moment. Bomber and Wainwright are all good at the Hollybush ; -) At £1.25 for H Hare, Rev James and Goblin gold is Christmas come early :-) It's rude not to mate.

I'm (just) hanging onto the last of the winter porters/ales. Agree, I've had a break from it.. fairly ridiculous at 8.4%, I can get three bottles for £4.50 extremely risky. I'll leave it alone until summer, don't think the 2015 'vintage' matched up to the 2014. Semi serious plans around a sojourn around Leek next saturday if you fancy joining ranks. Blue Mugge, Fountain, Earl Grey, Cock, Roebuck etc. Heard that the Quiet Woman bottom of St Edward's St has been bought by Lymestone. Keeping the name. I'll try to convince Okeydokie to come too.

Chance would be a fine thing... 3 week month in December followed by Tax Return and NI at end of Jan, followed by my VAT quarter being due first week Feb have left me even skinter than normal. Thank you HMRC... No, it's 89p a pint at Aldi for me for the foreseeable. The 10 French lager stubbies at £3.25 are budget beaters too.
If you wanted a start or end pub nearish to Leek, the Black Lion in Ched is an absolute gem. I like it in the summer. Sitting out front by the church, working my way through a few Henrietta, Black Sheep and decent Bass is heaven on earth. Last time I was in they also had a strong Belgian lager on draft, plus Peroni for the rich. (£4+ a pop?!)
Food is superb. Really good pub grub with fantastic homemade chips. Excellent choice of pork pies too. And the bogs are now closer to the Ritz than the old cow shed they used to be. Add to that that it is part owned by our own (ex-own?) Ryan Shotton, and what's not to like?

They opened the church tower up for the day during summer, cracking views, pre pint though. No motor required for a tour of Leek. No18.

What time on parade Satdee? A week on saturday Rog. I'll confirm details closer to, but most likely be breakfasting at Greenway Hall Golf Club and then buzzing to Leek and the Blue Mugge for mid day-ish. Got a couple of old friends visiting so a tour is in order. Fairly steady though. Non football day.

Tonight I will mostly be drowning in Guinness derivatives.
Poor man's Black Velvet, Port and G, and Irish Car Bombers and that. I'll avoid food.

I've been digging out an old ice house near Selby and the country house where it is has its own brewery - Little Black Dog Beer. I've had three or four different bottles of their brew and it has all been good stuff. Check them out online - www.littleblackdogbeer.com

Beer looks good too. Had friends who lived at Basford Hall Cheddleton, fully functioning Victorian Ice House there. Interesting place.

Very good - I deal a lot with old buildings so I normally get 'Your life is in ruins' etc. Interesting about the Cheddleton ice house - I've seen modern experiments done with old ones in Cumbria where the ice kept in good condition for a year. Beer from there is good - I'm just drinking a bottle of their Pomfret Stout - strong stout with hint of liquorice - lovely. I'm back there next week so will definitely be stocking up

Cherry Dark from Titanic. Get it drunk.
A 4.4% black beer but lighter in texture than their Plum Porter. Very moreish if you like a subtle bitter/sweet fruit finish.

I prefer the PP - particularly the Christmas special one. I like their stout and mild as well. Incidentally, if you get chance to taste Three Tuns Brewery Plum Porter - don't bother - it's a horrible sickly mess!

I like snecklifter a lot but it isn't a session beer for me nowadays - it's too strong. It does have a singular taste, like you say. I can drink PP till the cows come home though. The limited edition Christmas special one is worth a special trip if they do it again. The Cherry Dark is a lot drier than the PP to my taste.

Not my first choice of boozer if I'm honest unless there's a bit of boxing on the telly box but the previous ale on that pump was Plum Porter ! so I kind of couldn't keep away I guess the Titanic pubs should/could have it. I love cherries. The fruit, jam, pie's etc and it's bitter enough for me to be in a dark ale. I can't do the strawberry/raspberry ales that sometimes come along though. EDIT: Cherry Dark £2.85 in the Golden Lion. PP £12 for a pack of 8 500ml bottles Bargain Booze, Thistleberry Avenue, while stocks last

Some of the Belgian lambic beers are fruity. The cherry one is called kriek if you see it anytime. Might be worth a go if you like cherries.

Thinking of calling in at the Ran Ales brewery/bar pre match on wednesday, on the industrial estate in Fenton. Handy for the traxi drop off. Anyone been, any good? Guess where I was yesterday Ran Ales BarA brilliant, truly quirky place. A micro brewery and bar with an eclectic collection of free-cycled, owd pub tables and chairs. There's even an old record player if you've got any old vinyl that you want to treat everyone to Well, well worth a visit but like me you'll be spoilt for choice with 6 pumps, 3 of which are stouts. Wine, ciders and a few bar snacks !!! Stays open later than advertised, more like 10.30 pm Friday and Saturday. And....... BEER FESTIVAL NEXT WEEKEND THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY SUNDAY........ 6 house beers and 12 guest barrels

Lancaster Bomber is this weeks guest ale in the Marstons local. No mention of Thwaites on the pump and now 4.4%. I thought it used to be stronger.

Brew By Numbers, Brewery. BB No. 08/02 (08 is the stout range, 02 is the Imperial) A super traditional stout. The blurb says "decadent complexity". I say and then some! All the stouty-ness you can imagine from liquorice, treacle, roasted, cocoa, creamy etc...... At 9.5% it was a 1/3 only BBN

Too expensive to be a regular (a third was 2 quid) but one off the pumps and a bottle or two makes the visit a little treat now and again.

I can't find owt about it on-line, it must have completely died out. It was old fashioned enough back then.

We've been merged. Nice 😀 Here you go rog. They still have them in Germany. At 200ml just over 1/3 Imperial Pint.
About 2/3 the way down here
Stange Beer Glasses Very similar to a standard highball beer glass, the stange glass is famed for serving Kolsch in Germany. Characterised as being tall and thin, a stange glass traditionally hoods around 200ml of beer, however the glass is so similar to a tom collins glass or a mojito glass that any tall highball glass will have the same visual effect. The word stange literally translates as a stick, and it is common to serve a "stick of beer", or maybe a "rod of beer".

... and this from Wiki ties in with your triple beer board. The high, narrow and cylindrical Stange (German for "stick" or "rod") is traditionally used for Kölsch. A Becher, traditionally used for Altbier, is similar, though slightly shorter and fatter. The Stange usually holds between 100 ml and 200 ml (though larger ones are now sometimes used to reduce serving work). Stangen are carried by slotting them into holes in a special tray called a Kranz ("wreath").
A "stick" of Dunkel
