Amidst all the furore of Shaqiri and Kono it would be interesting to see what the plans are for our own midfield maestro Ollie Shenton? Willhe integrate further into the first team with further substitute appearances (after the touching event of letting him play against Man City after his mother died - Well Done Hughes and Co!) or will he disappear into the loan market for some "1st team" experience?
It just seems to have gone quiet after last seasons excitment.

Who needs N'Zonzi right!? Seriously though would love him to come good and be a solid Premier League player, would be ace to have a quality homegrown Stokie in the first team. Would fill me with pride that!

He's an exciting prospect but, at his age, he surely needs competitive games to progress. That looks a touch unlikely for Stoke just at this moment so surely we'll have to get him out on loan.

It was great to see wasn't he, he was filled with pride. By all accounts he's apparently very humble and a nice lad my cousin was in his class as school.

I'd play him in pre-season, see how he gels with the first team on the pitch, we need to be careful with him given what he's been through, so I don't agree with sending him out on loan, not just yet anyway.

Personally, I think Leslie missed a trick in not giving him more game time at the back end of last season.
This would clearly have given the lad a boost.
With all these names flying around as potential new signings, it does make you wonder if the future holds in store for him.
Lets see what type of character he is, hopefully he will be given a chance.......

He's on the fringe here already mate so I think he really needs games in a competative arena. You're right that he needs careful handling though so I'd send him to Crewe (if they want him of course). They know how to handle young players and 'blood them' for football at a higher level. I think he'd learn a lot there and get valuable experience, the type he won't get by simply associating with our 'stars'. Crewe's manager has recently stated that it's his midfield that he needs to strengthen.

Ha ha! Chance fully given [ ] Just wondering as an aside if anyone knew of anything regarding his future (away from the kono and Shaq will they, won't they sagas). With the possible enquires into signing players like Roberto and Molina, where does Shenton's development fit into it? I agree webby, it would fill me with pride too... Even more so if he was able to break into the England set up in the future (although it is far too early for that!)

I don't see him being good enough to be honest. Our team is getting stronger season on season and as it does so the step up to the senior squad becomes more difficult. This is likely why we're starting to look abroad and bring in some higher quality overseas talent. The home grown crop of players probably doesn't look as promising as it did a few seasons ago.

I'm hoping he's part of the squad for pre-season especially given that Bojan is going to be missing most of it so its a useful opportunity to see how he gets on in the first team. Plenty of time yet for the lad and I've every confidence that if he's good enough Hughes will play him.

You just know that this is going to go pear shaped. Next season will see him becoming more of a fringe player with some games under his belt. His head will get turned by Everton and they offer £500k which we refuse, it goes to tribunal and they are made to pay £750k. Ollie becomes a solid PL midfield player with Everton and they sell him for £15m to Man Utd when he's 22. Can just see it happening.

shenton will grow bigger and better and learn more with bojan and shaq and when the go shenton will cone a 1st player better than he would of been haveing played and trained with them you have to look at the bigger picture

I wouldn't get too carried away, Liverpool, arsenal, Chelsea etc have been filling their academies with foreign imports for years and I can't think of many that have broken into the first team! That said, it's got to be good for all the boys if the 21's is stronger, last years team lost to Walsall Wood in the Staffs cup, it's hard to go from there to breaking into the first team squad!

shenton will grow bigger and better and learn more with bojan and shaq and when the go shenton will cone a 1st player better than he would of been haveing played and trained with them you have to look at the bigger picture But it so rarely works that way mate. We have a pretty deep squad and, although I agree he'll learn from our top players, he won't get game experience because we probably can't provide him with that with any kind of regularity given our squad. He does need treating with care and bringing along slowly and (IMO) he's too young and inexperienced to expect him to cope with the quality he would have to cope with at this level. He will only get regular, competitive game experience on loan at a club that can give him regular football. He could be out on loan for the next two seasons and he'd STILL only be 19. Hughes knows him far better than I do and maybe he really is THAT good that he could push for inclusion here in the near future. Most youngsters benefit from going out to get competitive games and I'm guessing he would too. I suggested Crewe because they know how to look after young players and (IMO) he'd return all the better for it.

It was a crying shame that Palacios and that Brazilian lump Teixeira were making the bench at the end of the season because our players were dropping like flies.
At times I was mystified as to why Shenton didnt at least make the bench just as basic cover.
It makes me wonder if he hasnt quite developed as had been hoped? Or did he suffer some injuries?

You do realise he's 17 Quite right mate and I'm probably being a bit 'previous' in even think about loaning him out. He probably needs to continue his development in the youth team at the moment. Imagine you're 17 years of age and you're thrown in against the quality of opponent he'd face in the Premier League. I know some will say "If you're good enough, you're old enough" but the kids that can cope with that are very few and far between. For all I know, he just MIGHT be that good but he's been through tough times of late and he needs to be treated very carefully. I can't imagine he's going to feature for Stoke for some considerable time.

I'd rather he got used to the prem with a couple of sub appearances a season than get lumped into the lower leagues on loan, then have to adapt again when he returns

I think with these added players in the development squad and maybe the inclusion of Shaqiri (still got a feeling he won't sign) can only be beneficial to someone like Shenton. He'll have quality players in and around him. Champions league winners. Players of the highest caliber (available to us as of yet). Young potential he will train with day in day out. That can only advance him surely. The better player your playing with the better you improve.
He's not turned 18 yet. To think we could of a midfield of the two youngsters for Madrid and Ollie playing as a center 3 in a few years time. Now that would be special. Players who've trained for years together playing first team football. We could have our own 'class of 92'.
Exciting times for Stoke now snd like I've put in another thread this could be the most exciting time in our history in the coming years.

Pretty sure he didn't make the squad in Hughes's first season. Last season he was on the bench at least 6 or 7 times. Came on against Portsmouth and Man City.
