'Hughes is happy to start the season with no new winger'.
Doesn't sound to promising.
We definitely do need at least 1.

Good player but nearing 30 so not sure I'd go more than a 2 year deal.

You'd have to think this is bullshit. Just doesn't fit in with the transfer policy of the club.

When wingy joined he was being slagged off before he would even had a training session. That has been usurped! Downing getting slagged off at the mere suggestion by the Sentnull!

Like him as a player.
But he's got 2 yrs left on his deal, so you'd have to think the package would be excessive for a bloke who'll be 31 in a couple of weeks and has had his best years

That's exactly what we'll do after it looks like we've missed out on Kono... We want deals early, but we've struggled to get them.

Did we expect the pizza boys to pull off anything other than this type of signing?
Wont be long before Jarvis gets linked next!

We swapped wingie for a bloke who had refused to play, either would not be offered or would refuse to sign another contract and was probably on a much bigger wage. Downing would cost several million, want a top wage and a contract way beyond his prime which has already passed. It would be almost a mini Crouch deal and I've translated the owners own words to mean we're done making deals like that.

But they've all been deals consistent with the clubs transfer policy of the past two years or more. Part of which has always been we'll either make the deals we want to do or else we go with what we have. I don't see that changing

If Kono is a no-go and Moses moves on, there has got to be a plan C.
Got to be doubtful he's the best one though.
Sunderland and Newcastle seem to both be seriously in for him. And McLaren knows him really well from Middlesbrough.
The bidding seems to be up at £6m+ already for a soon-to-be 31-year-old. And you can only guess at the telephone numbers Allardyce chucked at him when they signed him from Liverpool. And he's got 2 yrs left on that deal.
This seems like the type of deal the Moneyball boys would run a mile from.

The only reason I like him is that watching him at the Brit thousands of Stokies believed they too could play for England!

When West Ham signed him 2 yrs ago, he reportedly had 2 years remaining on an £80k-a-week deal at Liverpool. However they juggled the numbers, you'd think he'd be on 50k+ now.
So with 2 yrs left on whatever deal they worked out with signing-on fees and whatever, what would it take to get him?
A 3yr deal, taking him up to 34, at the same money plus a fee of £6m or £7m?
When you see what's available abroad, away from the ridiculous Premier League bubble, for the same money, I can't believe Carto's computer would see that as the wisest investment.

Did well last season, but not my idea of a marquee signing...
if we sign a winger he has to be at least a step up on assaidi. Who was under used imo.

Taking money out of the equation, I'd be happy to sign him. Proven player in the Prem and can play on both wings.
Prefer him to Kono tbh.

My understanding was that Downing played well during the first part of last season when he was played behind the striker and was a major part of West Ham's good early season form. Latterly when he was shunted back out onto the wing he was a lot less effective. I'm sure one of our West Ham posters could confirm this if true.

I would imagine that at least half a dozen prem clubs and a host of Championship teams will have asked Downing's agents about his expectations, as he can clearly still do a very good job at this level, but it hardly means that they (including us) would take it further? His stellar form for West Ham came from playing more centrally, but you wouldn't imagine he'd get much game time there with Bojan, Adam and Ireland knocking around. Unless we're viewing him as a replacement for PO (even though he's not got anywhere near as many goals in him), or even SJW, I can't really see who he would displace in our team?
