It would give us a regular opportunity to sing one of my favourite songs.

My understanding was that Downing played well during the first part of last season when he was played behind the striker and was a major part of West Ham's good early season form. Latterly when he was shunted back out onto the wing he was a lot less effective. I'm sure one of our West Ham posters could confirm this if true. That's a pretty fair assessment - although the whole team were guilty of not bothering for most of the second half of last season. Personally, I'd still keep him at WHU for his versatility - as for his selling price £5-£7m, we'll struggle to replace him for similar money assuming he goes. He's also one of the quickest players in the Prem (deceptively) with a decent footballing brain and normally pretty injury free. At 30 of course he's probably looking for a final pay-day but his Liverpool wages were absorbed in his move to us so I can't see him breaking your structure and IMO there's no reason why wherever he goes next won't get a good couple of years out of him.

With Sunderland and Newcastle seemingly in, it's probably a moot point anyway if he wants to move back up there.

Simply underwhelming. We really are moving down that food chain fast. The reported transfer policy has gone by the way side it appears. Is Lee Trundle still available?

Did we expect the pizza boys to pull off anything other than this type of signing? Wont be long before Jarvis gets linked next! I posted on the Kono thread that we're actively pursuing Matt Jarvis a few days ago, don't forget where you heard it first folks

And his decision not to strengthen in that area in January bit us on the arse irrespective of our strong finish to the season. I have to say that is a very worrying quote if true.

Season starts before the window closes.
Maybe a repeat loan for Moses doesn't count as a new winger since we had him here last season.
Plus we have Odem back.
Not worried.

Did well last season, but not my idea of a marquee signing... if we sign a winger he has to be at least a step up on assaidi. Who was under used imo. That won't be difficult, he was pretty crap

It's a little bit at odds with Herr Scholes' upbeat we're in the big league and doing deals early now pronouncements of last week though, no?

We seem to be trying to bring in better players but keeping other options going (for our level options). Sensible.

I'd rather rip my own spine out of my arsehole then flop down into a pool of fetid shit than have Downing here.
Christ almighty.

I think he has the dubious distinction of being the only Liverpool winger in modern times to play an entire season (mostly starts) and not manage a single assist or goal.
I realise he did well at West Ham last season but still, that's a hell of a thing.

Im 50/50 on downing. I'd rather keep Odemwingie, and Walters, plus the possibly using Diouf or Geoff for RW if injuries hit us badly. He's a 31 year old who had a great last season like Walters in all honesty... Don't see a return on investment much there but he is a good player to have... Wouldn't hate it but wouldn't be over the moon either...

Don't see what the upside of this would be. Don't rate him, personally.
