Vaughan Williams - Lark Ascending Bit more mainstream but gets me every time. I was listening to this over Easter, whilst making Stoke beads(red&white, bought&brought from Istanbul(Basiktas)) with the kids. It had a V calming influence. I might put it on again after recent performances

Like Vaughan Williams??
Try this, his 7th Symphony, known as the Sinfonia Antarctica - very eerie - one for chilling in a darkened room too - very cinematic
and try a snippet of Robert Simpson's breathtaking 9th Symphony. Simpson's work can be challenging but rewarding About 1 min 30 secs in, its the sound of armageddon

The repetition of Philip Glass is not everyone's cup of tea,but I've not heard much to rival the plaintive, hypnotic beauty of his (second movement especially, ) violin concerto no.1

Seen Mozart mentioned; I know this is akin to heresy but somehow, ive never really taken to Mozart nor Haydn, Handel etc.
Don't mind Vivaldi.
For me it start with the Romantic era

Apologies if already posted but this is great Sure it was used in Die Hard 2??
Arnold Bax is great, up there with Holst & Vaughan Williams. I can really recommend (as have them all) the Bax symphonies available on Naxos
Something from Holst, apart from The Planets. Again this is on Naxos, a collection of orchestral works of Holst (apart from The planets) which I can heartily recommend
And a dollop more Sibelius
Again Sibelius is wonderfully represented on Naxos

I just cant get it somehow, its too 'light' - I know its akin to a burning at the stake offence in the Classical World
Or posting Hughes Out on the main board LOL
The Eine Kleine piece is better for me than the Figaro, suits me more

I love Wagner mate; its possibly the greatest example of any art form ever. Its transcending I do tend to prefer the orchestral stuff as opposed to the opera side so I always go for the orchestral only takes
Try a bit of Parsifal
Or this, from the 4th to the 6th minute, I could go out of the body listening to it. Its perfection
And this, id like it played at my funeral
how could something as profound & beautiful as Wagner's music be tainted with the stain of Nazism?

And I agree with the Hughesy bit 100%

Dodgy helmets, but superb music by Prokofiev. Takes a little while to get going. The whole Prokofiev score to the film is excellent.

My favourite Mozart
Everyone's favourite Rachmaninov (it is really good though). And you can't help but sing the lyrics to Eric Carmen's 'All by Myself' to the second movement.
My mum's favourite

For me it start with the Romantic era Inclined to agree with this, appreciate the genius of Mozart, the sheer creative fecundity, the compositional iconoclasm and breadth of imagination, but i just find it a tad too 'frothy,'though I love the Requiem Mass in D minor.....but then people do tell me I'm a miserable sod.... There are some absolutely sensational passages in Handel's compositions too.

Like my heavy stuff from prog rock all the way to thrash, black & death metal..but love a bit of classical too
shame its sometimes seem as just music for the so called elite, it's music for ALL!
Anyone else like a bit of Holst or Stravinsky etc?? Or any particular movie soundtracks - the proper ones where its an orchestra (not just random r&b tracks cobbled together) We 0are sooooo lucky. Live 20 mins from Birmingham city centre and Symphony Hall - been to see several classical events in 2016 already, 'smooth classics' and 'space spectacular' wow - John Williams and Star Wars, brilliant!

This sort of stuff does the trick for me as well.
Not a religious bone in my body either, though I respect anyone else's right to believe.
