I know the pieces. They are all obviously political in their historical context. Different medium though. They are visual and therefore need to be taken more literally surely. And while passionate, I would hardly call them jingoistic. Viewed on first sight today and out of that context, apart from some of the Goyas, any nationalism would be entirely secondary to the main thrust describing the visceral horrors of war.

... I suppose the Horst-Wessel-Lied would be a difficult one to argue. You could have had me with that. I don't suppose that counts as classical in any decent regard though. Could still have a few fans on here mind...

Here we are:-
Ralph Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending
and if you have nodded off...
Carl Orff - O Fortuna ~ Carmina Burana
Some incongruous images there, given the subject matter of the lyrics.
Anyway I think I'll go and have a shave now...

One of the finest gigs/concerts I've attended so far was The Penguin Cafe Orchestra {well a quintet} at Dartington College Chapel, beautiful ambience and gorgeous music.
Mesmerising.

Think this reworking of Chopin is quite appropriate for todays result and the end of the season LOL
(I loathe wrestling but I do love this reworking)

Try this Bisp
From 4 mins onwards, its overwhelming mate. Im not a religious man but when I hear this, I think there must be something more. Its possibly the most emotional piece ive ever heard

Always had a soft spot for that tune after hearing it on an episode of The South Bank Show dedicated to them. Music for a Found Harmonium always lifts the mood too.

The tragedy is its still not well known
Back around 1990, Melvyn Bragg did a South Bank Show on it; heavily linked to images of the holocaust
It saddened me to the core, the combination of the deathcamp images and that music burned deeply. I was an emotional wreck after it

You've read my mind, Bisp..... I nearly posted a similar 'Mars' clip the other day on the soundtrack thread but couldn't remember what it had been used for. I'm sure it's been on something or other. Mars is my favourite. - From the Planet Suite, that is, not chocolate, before you start.
