Like my heavy stuff from prog rock all the way to thrash, black & death metal..but love a bit of classical too
shame its sometimes seem as just music for the so called elite, it's music for ALL!
Anyone else like a bit of Holst or Stravinsky etc?? Or any particular movie soundtracks - the proper ones where its an orchestra (not just random r&b tracks cobbled together)

The British Leyland Concerto - in four movements, all of them slow, with a four-hour tea-break in between

Hey you might like Metallica's S&M album/DVD; a live concert from 1999 that they did with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael kamen (Lethal Weapon OST). it's a bit heavier than the rather excellent Deep Purple project.
There's a few rock/metal bands who mix classical with metal; full orchestras, choirs etc. Therion, Nightwish & Epica are perhaps the best. I find the two genres to be very comfortable bedfellows; different instruments, same dynamics. Crosses over a lot better than some of the rock/rap stuff ever did.
I think DP might have done a more up to date version of that concert? Surprised Zeppelin or Sabbath never tried it? Jon Lord was a really good composer, easily cut it outside rock, RIP

Well Jon Lord was classically grounded of course .....even Ritchie Blackmore has nodded his head in that direction in the past ....perhaps even more so these days .

Mars is excellent too......it does sum up the characteristics of the Planets , Mars is a far darker piece than Jupiter ....but of course he was the bringer of War , Jupiter far more cheerful and open ....the bringer of joyousness ....as an astronomer you do understand where Holst was coming from .

Mahler is pretty intense stuff. I discovered a contemporary of Holst, namely Arnold Bax; I would highly recommend his piece called Tintagel (based on Arthurian legend). Also if you want it heavy, I'd really recommend Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring. John Williams lifted pieces from it for many parts of the Jaws music (JW, brilliant music but he did pinch a lot)
Ahhh, to find a bit of culture in SOT ;-)

The whole Planets suite is amazing; really like the way Neptune fades out with that haunting, ethereal chorus.
Great piece and all, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia theme, he also did the score for the John Mills Scott Of The Antactic movie which he then expanded into a full symphony, the Symphony Antarctica, dead atmospheric with some really eerie fx that reminds me of Neptune from The Planets
