The lost art of Shoegazing. The miserable spawn of Goth and {edit: and perhaps part begetter of} Grunge. With their introspection, pumps, cardigans and fringes I thought they'd failed to breed and became extinct. My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Lush and such? Then I see Ride are back.... Ace..

That's not goth. That's West coast, psychedelic/Rock/pop. Can't understand a word, but I like it

It's like Kula Shaker had never been formed.

Slowdive reformed last year and it seemed to be a big deal. Weird because no fucker paid them any attention the first time 'round. I liked Pale Saints, if they count?

It had a brief popularity in the early nineties, it was very much the spawn of Goth and Grunge. Ride were perhaps a poor example, and they do seem to have found a bit of wah-wah. Back in the day they were much greyer. They did like their incomprehensible mumbled vocals did the Shoegazers. No, I havn't a clue either.

It's like Kula Shaker had never been formed. Ride were formed in the late 80's, they were before Kula Shaker, by several years.

I don't think I've ever heard a Slowdive song. I'd forgotten about Pale Saints, I may have to do a youtube. Bands like these killed new British guitar music for me for a while. I keep reading good reviews for SunDial, but I've never got them.

Indie was the precursor to Brit-Pop & whilst Goth may have been on thee indie labels, they were hardly Brit-Pop. Brit-Pop was the commercialisation of indie bands of the ilk of Stone Roses

Ride were much under-rated imo amd never really part of the Shoegazing scene, although the music press being the music press and desperate for a 'scene' of any kind lumped them in with Chapterhouse, Lush, Slowdive, MBV etc. If anyone wants to get to know Ride a bit better their first two albums are the best, especially the second one Going Blank Again, which is a cracking album and available in its entirety on youtube. It all went a bit downhill from there, leading to the point where the two songwriters insisted on having their songs on different sides of the album! Andy Bell of course went on to sell his soul and join Oasis before finally seeing reason and rediscovering some musical integrity

Quality lyrics, and the instrumental from 2 minutes on is just awe inspiring.

A world apart from staring at your winkle pickers to clicking your Adidas Samber heals in a jolly fashion. I think the reason for the recent upturn in respect for shoegaze - what a ridiculous attempt by the music press to contrive a scene! - is that musically and culturally its legacy beats Britpop hands down.

I did like the Cocteau Twins, saw them on a snowy Treasure Tour at Leeds Uni in about '85. Last Century. It's all gobbledigook.
Blur and Verve came out of the Shoegazery and got straight into the BritPop nonsense. They may well have been media constructs, but still the kids adopted those labels.
Quite like the new Blur album.
Don't like MBV and Kevin Shields overblown production nonsense.

Do you not like the pre-album MBV stuff?

With MBV I always think there are good tunes struggling against slowed down/speeded up tape loops and guff. I prefer them as an idea rather than actually listening to them. I bought 'Loveless' on tape when it came out and was convinced I'd got a dodgy/stretched copy. It put me off them. There is a MBV Primal Scream Remix of 'Swastika Eyes' or somesuch that I quite liked, I'll have to dig that out. On the whole MBV are a 'no' from me.
{Never got that Wow stuff to you Mark. PM me an address and I'll get to it mate.}

Loveless is one of the most overrated albums ever - definitely a touch of the Emperor's new clothes I think. Surprising it's so revered when there's so much better MBV stuff either side.

Amen to that. I'm with Cheeez on Kevin Shields flappy art-shite production ideas too. I like the way Steve Albini does it. No-one better. And i've been itching to drop this absolute belter in for weeks somewhere appropriate. Genius. Genius.
