Sexist chanting must be tackled says FA after 'horrible' footage The Football Association is calling on fans to report sexist abuse after being shown disturbing scenes of women officials and staff being subjected to obscene chants.
Footage obtained by the BBC shows Chelsea's female medic Dr Eva Carneiro and assistant referee Helen Byrne suffering taunts during recent games.
FA board member Heather Rabbatts described the abuse as "horrible".
She said it should not be tolerated, adding: "We are absolutely encouraging people to report incidents like this."
The footage was taken at Chelsea matches against Manchester City and Manchester United, and at a game between Doncaster Rovers and Bristol City.
This season, 25 match-day incidents of sexist abuse have been reported to anti-discrimination campaign group Kick It Out and equality group Women in Football (WiF), after just two complaints in the whole of last season.
But a lack of evidence means no club or fan has ever been punished by football's governing bodies.
Manchester City admitted "a breakdown in communication" meant "the usual investigation process was not followed".
The club added: "A new specific guidance on sexist abuse was introduced from the very next game and a new training programme implemented."
Manchester United said: "No complaint was made at the time, so any feedback of this nature made after the event has to be referred to the police, which the club did within 24 hours."
The Football Supporters Federation said it "doesn't receive many complaints in relation to sexist chanting at games, although that isn't to say it doesn't happen".
Sure to divide opinion?

The world would be so much better if everyone stopped fucking moaning about things. Three year olds are taught to ignore words, as they can pose no threat to them, yet we have adults who cry to the authorities like babies if a mild swear word or so called discriminatory language is used.
It's not sexist to sing 'he hits like a girl' either, as I'm pretty sure if you gathered 100 women and 100 men together and tested the strength of each of their punches, the men's punches would, in general, be harder. I'm not saying that's the case for everyone, but if people took it as a joke as it was intended to be then everyone would be much happier.

If women want to play any part in the men's game they need to put up and shut up, otherwise they should stick to women's football. There are pictures of heather rabbats on the bbc website, she looks like Sam allardyce in a wig!

It can't be very nice if you're a female steward/lineswoman/reporter/police officer/fan,etc. at a match, and you have a crowd of men shouting/singing sexist things at you. You can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't do it on their own but for their strength in numbers. Isn't that rather cowardly?
Why should they have to put up with it? It's not acceptable. If it was racist chanting, it would be heavily criticised. What's the difference?
'It's a mans game', one poster has mentioned above. Is it? What about the poor old lady who sadly died watching the Potters at the end of last season, and had supported them before many on this board were even born? What about my 5-year old daughter who I hope to take to her first game shortly, the likes of whom are the future lifeblood of this club? What about many of the female posters on this board - Surrey Stoke, et al. I'd love to hear what they think.
It's the beautiful game. Beautiful because it can be enjoyed by all.
A Daily Mail reader will pipe up and say 'It'll be the end of Delilah'. No it won't. That's part of tradition and history that is interwoven with the fabric of the club. Pure, gratuitous, sexist chanting isn't.

I believe there is a difference. I can't speak for everyone but I would suggest that one is banter and one is hatred. I doubt a larger lady would be asked to get her hooters out for the boys, more likely a little ditty about pies, which is what a fat bloke gets or do we ban fattist / ageist / anyotherist as well. I've walked around the Brit with Stoke Ladies and got more abuse than they did, mainly from the away fans but rather than blart about it I laughed it off even though some comments were poor attempts at humour - you have to give the stupid people a bit of leeway

The world becomes a better please as men an woman can participate on equal terms in society. Work gets more fun and we still have sex

Take a look around the average football crowd and you'll notice it's largely made up of white, able-bodied, heterosexual men. There might be a few women around, a few black faces, and a small percentage of people will be gay. If those people are surrounded by a chanting mob, aiming vitriolic abuse around race, disability, gender or sexuality, it must be quite uncomfortable at least- intimidating at worst- even if the chanting isn't aimed at them personally.
It comes down to one thing when you're at a match: choosing to act decently or choosing to act like a cunt at other people's expense.
I know which one I'd rather do.
And before anyone says it, I don't want t sit there in a sanitised atmosphere with no chanting- I love it when things get heated and we dish out abuse to certain players who deserve it. But this is something different isn't it?

We can all have opinions but what really matters is the opinions of those on the receiving end. If THEY find it offensive and unacceptable then that is exactly what it is. Agree with it or not, people should accept that.

I don't see any complaints to the FA when the palace cheerleaders are being whistled and cheered. Absolutely pathetic. Although they are all entitled to the same treatment, I'm struggling to compare entertainers that are there to draw a reaction from the crowd with a doctor performing her medical duties and a football official just there to do her job. The dancers are entitled to find certain chanting sexist/offensive or unacceptable mind you and, I'm sorry but we all have to accept that whether we like it or not.
