Wasn't he suspended by Sunderland until his trial? Yes, but then we stopped the suspension when his bail was extended

It's not a nightclub scenario. The girl lives near him and he knows her Dad. Apparently the only evidence is her word and some texts. It will be hard for the CPS to prove.

I don't see the problem. People should cheer on the player on the pitch but ignore what he does off it because all that matters is sporting heroism and allegiance.
Isn't that what I should be teaching my nippers?

If that's what you are teaching your kids you can feck off down the Vale!

Now he has been charged his footballing days are over, no matter what the outcome . What on earth do you base that on? Simple common sense. In this day and age it is the worst thing to be charged with if you have some public profile.

comment from Durham police
May I remind all concerned that the defendant has a right to a fair trial. It is very important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
'I would also remind people that the complainant in this case is entitled to lifelong anonymity under the law. For these reasons, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.'
The price of fame?
If he was a Stoke player would we have a different view of things?

Why are the C.P.S. prosecuting him? Isn't signing for Sunderland a clear case of dementia?

It seems very unfair that one side of any such allegation is allowed anonymity - these days there has to be some sort of effect on proceedings It is most likely that the accused is known. I agree that he deserves the correct punishment and repercussions. He won't be playing tomorrow, I hope that our supporters put their energies into being the "12th man", it will be a tough game

With any trial where a jury is involved and regardless of the evidence there is a good chance he'll be found not guilty .

Sunderland have confirmed he's in the squad to face us tomorrow I'd still be amazed if he was in the 18 tomorrow though, despite saying he's "available". We certainly wouldn't have to worry about a yawn of an atmosphere if he did feature though!

Bizarre really. I suppose money is getting in the way of morals though and they would think they'd have a better chance of staying up with him playing.

Bizarre really. I suppose money is getting in the way of morals though and they would think they'd have a better chance of staying up with him playing. Hard to fathom it. It's one thing before he's charged, but seems crazy after it. Maybe a top-form Johnson would help them - but he'll just be a sideshow and his mind will be all over the place. I remember Lee Bowyer played great after his arrest - but that kindof toughness is rare and it's just an open invitation for the home crowd to whip up a frenzied atmosphere. Spinksy's take on the statement is that he'll definitely feature as early as tomorrow. I still can't see it - but we'll see.

We all know it's innocent until proven guilty but it's pretty standard practice to suspend on full pay until the proceedings have been resolved. Very questionable decision I think.
