First time I've watched Wolly tonight.
I really wasn't impressed. He either kept getting drawn out and leaving a massive gap for their striker to run into or dropping deep and playing their striker onside. It just wasn't very good and in the first half, both him and Ryan (along with Whelan and Fonz) were our weak area. They improved immeasurably after the break.
Hopefully it was just a case of playing with a clearly not fit Shawcross and a just having a bit of a bad game.

Phillips running style really worries me. I've never seen a really top class player run like he does,so by that rationale he won't turn out to be much good. He is a centre half.

Only ever seen one other athlete (in its widest sense) run like that and he has held a world record for over a decade and won endless gold medals.
Admittedly he doesn't have a ball at his feet ???? but that's fine by me.
The name is Michael Johnson, (USA) whose commentating is as good as his running.
Please Leave our newcomer alone, at this stage.

Thought Wolly played better with Muniesa alongside him last week at Leicester and like RAF says in his post his traits are very Mertersacker like for me.

Safe to say that if they play like that against Zamora and Austin, the latter will bag a shit load.

Wooly was better than Ryan tonight so it must be Ryan that is toss.
Rolls eyes whilst scratching his head at the sheer stupidity of the opening post.

Ryan and Muniesa every time for me, they seem more composed. Wolly and Ryan in the two games they've played together have frightened the life out of me. I can make allowances for the Arse game but fortunately Rochdale couldn't hit a barn door

I like Wolly, he seems to be still getting used to Ryan more than Marc for some reason. Perhaps Ryan's niggling injury tonight? coupled with some wtf moments from the midfield. That wasn't the case versus Leicester where Wolly knew he'd have to run to everything and clear it... Having said that, I prefer the Ryan - Muniesa partnership just because Wolly is so new. I liked the Wolly - Muniesa partnership as well. Tough one, but Muniesa's known skill on the ball edges it for me. Wolly seems to be the real deal though and should we be able to get him on a perm we shouldn't hesitate as potential cover just incase Ryan's injury woes won't go away.

I'm probably over simplifying this, but at the end of the day they conceded one goal of which neither could do anything about.
Wolly has looked the business in his first two games against Premier/Champions League standard opponents.
I think he'll turn out to be a gem.

What worries me is that they might both be players who should be played on the right side of the pair.
Shawcross & Huth we're so succesfull because one preferred playing on the right of the pair and one preferred playing on the left.
Believe me with centre halves it does make a difference.
I just worry that it may not have been a coincidence that Wollscheids best game so far was when he played on the right of the two alongside Muni in shawcross's absence.

I remember a certain bacon-faced cunt saying the same thing about Jordan Henderson, and he's turned out to be a really good all-round player. (Though I know not all will agree...) I certainly wouldn't worry yet. He's only just joined us! Everyone needs a bit of time to bed in.

They're similar players to one another, maybe a bit too similar, but one advantage of playing them together is that we have another target for set pieces.

I feel as if the look at each other as to say... "I've got it." then they are getting into each others way... Where with each of them partnered with Muniesa separately it's a given who is going to go for the aerial most of the time like you've eluded to. They are quite similar to me.

I just think Shawcross was feeling his injury and Wollscheid has never played on a pitch like that before.
At half time they sorted it out and looked solid enough to me. The goal was down to bad set piece defending.
