You're incredibly out of touch. While no form of abuse is supposed to be okay, comparing taking the mickey out of a ginger lad and racist abuse is ignorant. It's a bit astonishing the number of times I see someone feeling clever draw that exact analogy in those exact words. In any case, you're a British guy. I'm sure you feel pretty secure in your skin coming from a country which ruled much of the continents and controlled much of the seas over the last couple of centuries. If you were called a white tw.at, you probably couldn't care less. Perhaps you'd take racism just a little less flippantly if millions of your people were murdered for their ethnicity in the holocaust or millions of your chained, caged, dehumanized ancestors were shipped across the Atlantic in the slave trade, or you spent much of the last century battling for an end to apartheid or segregation. The strangest thing is that I've agreed with you on several occassions. Racism is wrong and anyone involved needs educating. What I struggle to understand, and you can call this ignorance if you want, is why we have threads week in week out about racism at the football (something I've not heard for years and even in this thread relates to 2 people out of a following of 3k plus) but sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and yes bringing it down to the lowest level gingerism never gets mentioned despite most of us hearing it week in week out? You can say it's due to the history of slavery but nobody alive today had anything to do with slavery. Apartheid happened on the other side of the world, and most of the population of this country (of all colours) demonstrated against it. We were the country that stood alone against the country that was responsible for the Holocaust. So I struggle to see why any of thats a factor. You can assume how I feel about the colour of my skin all you want (something I'd never do), but the only point I was trying to make is that I find it strange that some forms of abuse matter more than others, when IMHO all forms of abuse are as wrong as each other. Who says homophobia, sexism and all that never get mentioned? We've seen media upheaval about those issues when they arise in football or anywhere else. You're making that up. And yes, some forms of abuse regarding one's identity (race, ethnicity, even religion) matter more than others due to the historical and political significance. There's no simpler way to explain it to you. There's no point looking to draw a false equivalence. Mocking the colour of someone's hair and denigrating his race aren't on the same planet at all. And the post-racial society you're trying to portray doesn't exist either. Race is still a very strong issue in British society desppte the fact Britain is better than most.

If you hear racist chanting, report it. It's against the rules inside of the stadium and many do not want to here it or for their children to hear it.
If you're not sure, report it. Seriously. In any sport there are two sides and that's it.Home and away.
SCFC is becoming more diverse with every signing, and the next generation should look at these players without prejudice.
Plus, what do you have to lose? Racists have lost every war I can think of. They're shit at fighting.

Haha it's really not surprising to see his Avatar is that of a UKIP banner... "I'm not racist but how is calling someone a "n****r" worse than calling Kitson an "orange twat"." Erm... maybe because gingers haven't faced serious mass persecution in the form of slavery, lynchings and segregation in the modern history. Seeing as slavery was abolished in 1833, it isn't really modern history is it? I've also seen little in the way of lynchings or segregation in these parts during my lifetime. You can carry on beating yourself up about what happened a couple of centuries ago, I'm a bit more concerned about the here and now. In the here and now I see very little if any racism going on. As the Op stated a couple of supporters tried a couple of times to start a racist chant and everyone else (out of a 3k plus follwing) ignored them. What a massive problem we have, a national campaign should be started and perhaps we should have a few more threads about it. As I said earlier, theres absolutely no excuse for racist behaviour but there are lots of pretty offensive things that go on at football grounds. Is calling Wenger a French twat acceptable (xenophobia)? Is swearing when children are at the match reasonable behaviour? Why does racism get treated as some sort of special case, when the problem is relatively minor? What as my UKIP support as to do it? Or are you one of the sheep who thinks anyone wanting change in this country is a closet racist. You carry on voting the way you always have, as the 3 major parties are making such a good job of it. First of all as you know, i had as little to do with Slavery as yourself, so no i don't beat myself up or blame me or anyone not around at that time for it. That doesn't however, mean i can't see why an issue so 'modern' as this wouldn't be way more offensive that ripping on someone's hair colour. As you took my two examples word for word and didn't look outside of the box i'll make it more relevant for you, as a child i witnessed mass chanting about P**is at a certain oldham away fixture, i've heard in the last few years the N words used as a slur and i've seen first had massive race marches conducted by the EDL (or am i straying too far away from football here?) Anyway to say racism is dead or a small issue these days proves what little you know, is it a lot better than year gone by, for sure and thats a credit to us as a nation and as a sport... however it's still very much around and very much worse than hair colour slurs. Why? Because of the vile acts that have been carried out for hundreds of year across the globe and the close minded view's still held about these acts even to this day. Calling Wenger a French twat is Xenophobic yes... but it's not the same in the sense that we don't berate all French men we don't go out of our way to hurl offensive objects at French players and it is the acts of this man not his nationality we truly take umbrage too. Now as a UKIP supporter i'm fully aware you'll tell me how your as against racism as the next person... but the fact is you and UKIP as a whole couldn't give a toss. I do want change but it don't want a bunch of ex-tory, posh boys and closet bigots driving that change.. and for the record i've never voted for one of the big 3 in a general election... Now enjoy being or at very best being fooled by a bunch of 1950's close minded fools. They'll pass like every other group like them has done....

There was a bloke near me on Saturday who was being racist throughout the match. He was telling the Leciester fans to fuck off back to their cornershops and calling them pakis. It was fucking disgraceful. From what I could tell, he was reported by several Stokies who were right next to the stewards separating the Stoke and Leicester fans on the right hand side of our allocation. The stewards did absolutely nothing during the game, maybe because they seemed quite busy trying to quell the chances of it kicking off, but I'd like to think they took down the seat number and followed it up after the game. Other than report it, what can you do? Confront the offender and you're likely to end up in a scrap and likely to end up with a banning order yourself. Just have to hope that the authorities take it seriously and clamp down on it. The problem you have there is that it isn't always the people who bought the tickets who are in the seats. People just plonk themselves anywhere so others just fill empty seats. Many times we have just gone and stood at the back with the other standing fans. Rightly or wrongly I just ignore what is said on the terraces in the heat of the moment. To me they are only words and have myself slipped up in the past with no racist intent what so ever. No, you can't guarantee the person who bought the ticket for that seat is the offender, but with the amount of CCTV football grounds have these days it wouldn't be hard to pin point the offender who's stood/sat in that particular seat. There's no way you could say this particular person was carried away in the heat of the moment. To use racist abuse countless times within a 90 minute period is not being caught up in the heat of the moment; it's being a racist.

I have confronted racists at football several times. At Burnley the bloke behind me shouted black bastard and ni88er at a Burnley player several times. I turned around asked what he'd say about Mark Stein to be told it was different because Stein plays for Stoke. I then asked him how he thought Mark Stein would like it if he knew one of his own supporters had racially abused an opposition player. He never shouted it again after that.
At a Chester v Reading game a Chester fan started to make 'hilarious' monkey noises at a black Reading player. When the rest of the crowd didn't join in he turned and looked disgruntled. He said it was just a laugh. I asked him what was funny about it. He didn't know.
At Port Vale v Man City a Man City fan was giving Darren Beckford mindless abuse. I was going say something at which point the police took him to one side and warned him. A minute later I saw him leave the ground of his own accord.... as if he'd travelled to Boslem from Manchester on a cold day just to shout out racist crap and if he wasn't allowed to he might as well go home.

Racism is quite simply never allowable or justifiable. I called various players useless bastards on many occasions, but would never abuse someone's race. How about fat bastard, gypo bastard, bald bastard etc etc is that ok with you Fat bastard yes, useless bastard, yes, gypsy or derivatives - no. It's to do with historic segregation and inferior treatment of people who were seen as being lesser than the white protestant christian majority. Using a term such as gypsy, black, pakistani implies that the chanter is superior to the intended recipient. Incidentally, constant abuse of anyone (except Wilshere) is also unjustified, but a little bit of comedic humour at Wengers expense (the hand wave) or Phil Brown's (the Bullard sit down after he scored) can be as funny for the recipient as everyone else

So... your point is essentially you are free to judge people on the basis of very little knowledge about them - just one feature you are able to identify? Isn't that what racism is?
As I said, if someone does wrong then report them. First hand experience has shown me a number of people who work long hours to support a mrs & kids and generally being what fits the description of "decent" but add a few beers to the mix and in a group with others who have been drinking and you end up with some very silly remarks from them. I don't agree with it, but I also don't see it as my place to pass judgement on what kind of person it makes them. No. noun 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. But racism is a form of prejudice. The aspect I highlighted was judging people on the basis of very little knowledge about them, which is based on your own beliefs. If you do it to a person of a different skin colour its racism, different gender sexism etc etc. But they all fall under the same branch of prejudice.

Okay, here's the scenario - I was away at Leicester on Saturday with family. Had a great day out in a fantastic atmosphere, apart from one thing - three guys in the row behind me chanting racist songs at various points in the match - ironically, just as a group of kids were walking around the pitch with the 'respect' banners. Pleasingly, no-one else joined in (a few muttered comments about us having some 'idiots' amongst our fans), but what do you do about it? How do you react? How SHOULD you react?
If you confront them you'll just have a bunch of philistines bombard you with fists? Telling a steward is pretty obvious but that'll get you the same end result.
So, any thoughts out there as we've got to get rid of these knuckle-draggers. they're bringing our club down. No debate, just report them - we're all tarred with the same brush as that shower.

Now enjoy being or at very best being fooled by a bunch of 1950's close minded fools. They'll pass like every other group like them has done.... Apologies, I didn't realise when you said lynchings, what you really were on about were some racist chants 15 years ago. Similarly, I failed to spot the quantum leap from segregation to the use of the n word. How on earth did I miss that. I've made a mental note that in future I'll take all messages left on any message board with a big pinch of salt, and remember that they actually mean something totally different. I must admit though, that despite keeping this at the forefront of my mind, your response has left me even more confused about your muddled thinking. You mention the racist chanting back at Oldham, a sad day for sure, but doesn't the OP say that racist chanting didn't start at Leicester? So again we can beat ourselves up about something that used to happen but this very thread proves does not happen any more. I'm also pretty sure that the EDL were taken to their hearts by so many of the British public that they've recently disbanded, yet another of your examples that doesn't exist anymore! If you are continually confronted by the n word, then I can only suggest you find some new friends, as I haven't heard the word in years. It is now probably the most socially unacceptable term that anyone could utter. You can infer I'm a bigot all you like. Just like 99.99% of the UK population, I look past race/colour and judge people on their words/actions. I'm so bigoted I've given jobs to people of varying races, just because they were the best man/woman for the job. The remaining 0.01% of the population are split in 2 camps. The first of course are the remaining few racists like the 2 shouting racist abuse at Leicester. The second are those who seem blinded by liberal thinking and on some puritan witch-hunt looking for racism where little exists. Racism in this country is far less prevelant than xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, ageism, etc, etc and as a country we'd all be far better off if we didn't focus almost exlusively on 1 form of abuse.

Think Lakeland nailed the answer for me - tell a steward at half time on the way to the bar/loo with seat numbers and hope they follow it up.

Therefore calling someone a black whatever is basically asserting that you are better than them

Also never thought racist remarks a being "silly remarks" "Oh sorry sir but the drink makes me resort to silly racism, usually I am such a good person who treats everyone with equal respect regardless of their colour, or creed." Racism is racism as far as I am concerned.

SO racists can be off duty then? Never realised that, always thought they were racist regardless of if they get drunk or not. Also never thought racist remarks a being "silly remarks" "Oh sorry sir but the drink makes me resort to silly racism, usually I am such a good person who treats everyone with equal respect regardless of their colour, or creed." Racism is racism as far as I am concerned. While I applaud your ability to completely misread a point and run a marathon with it. It's not what I said. Sentence structure is vital at these times. I never said the people in question had said anything racist, nor did I say they hadn't. I merely said that I know the people who fit the general description of being a 'decent' person also coming to say some very silly things when drinks are involved. Then I said that I don't agree with it - and then I said I didn't see it as my place to pass judgement on what kind of person it makes them. I never actually said racism is silly either. That seems to have been some construct on your own behalf, but I would consider any person who makes a racist remark to have said something silly. Why? Because it's not an intelligent thing to say, it's not a wise thing to say. Therefore I categorise it as a silly remark. To reiterate, as I said if someone has done wrong - then report them. I never said there were mitigating factors, nor exceptions to the rule because that is for the due process to decide. I would expect all racists to be off duty though some of the time, I don't imagine anyone could spend every waking moment with their life dedicated to the irrational hatred/dislike of people.

Racism is racism as far as I am concerned. Would that apply to coloured people who are racist towards white people or is it selective , we have a large number of Polish, Latvian, Russian people in the UK in my experience they are particularly racist towards coloured people, are we encouraging racism into this country by allowing these people to migrate here and live in our multi cultural society, could be a recipe for disaster, finally how do you stand on black people calling other black people n****s is that racist or just banter.
