As seen yesterday with Jones and Smalling.

Best defence outside of the top 4 (goals conceded) You don't do that without being a decent centre half. Majority of those games with Marc Wilson as his centre half partner as well!!!!!! As someone said earlier, kept every world class striker in the league in his back pocket. Giroud, Costa, Rooney, van Persie, Kane, Austin, Lukaku. Not trying to detract from Shawcross' performance today and his showings this season but if you're gonna use the words "world class" dunna follow them up with Giroud,Kane,Austin and Lukaku Shawcross will be head hunted in the summer unfortunately Kane is a good one though because he's scoring for fun and just ripped apart the widely acclaimed best central defensive partnership in the Country. Ryan never gave the lad a kick. I would rather use the names, Aguero, Van Persie, Costa, Rooney and Falcao as recent examples of his brilliance. No-one consistently gets the better of Ryan Shawcross. People have said he is too quiet to be captain. If that were ever true, it isn't now. People said he couldn't play football. If that were ever true, it isn't now. The latest stick to beat him with is that he isn't quick enough. When was the last time anyone can remember him being beaten in a straight foot race? Ryan Shawcross is one of the best players, of any nationality, in the Premier League. He is easily amongst the best defenders. He could well even be the best and he is DEFINITELY the best English defender in the Country.

He is a brilliant defender but lets not forget the other defenders like Pieters, Muniesa, Cameron who together made Rooney and V persie look very ordinary.

He is a brilliant defender but lets not forget the other defenders like Pieters, Muniesa, Cameron who together made Rooney and V persie look very ordinary. For me, this is what makes Ryan even better than people appreciate. First half, both Cameron and Muniesa were all over the place. Regularly out of position, regularly being dragged into areas that they didn't need to be in yet Shawcross held them all together, did everyone's job as well as his own and kept us in the game defensively almost on his own. He was continually barking orders, continually pulling them back into position and all this whilst doing his own job immaculately. Second half, we were much better and positionally much more disciplined and then Ryan came into his own, showing what a fine player, defender and leader he is. Put him in Chelsea's team for 10 games and it would be so easy they would be talking about Ryan as one of the WORLDS best defenders. He makes it look easy playing for us and often he's a 1 man back 4.

It's not possible on here to have a reasoned debate about Ryan because of the esteem he is held in by fans, clearly though there are people in the game who have their doubts.
Ryan Shawcross is playing very well, I'm really waiting to see if other clubs come in for him or he is called up by England.
I thought the United defence looked weak yesterday but not because of Smalling or Jones but more to do with their system.

I disagree entirely about not having a reasoned debate about Ryan. The reason he is held in such high esteem is mainly because of his consistently excellent performances and also the way he conducts himself away from the football pitch. Its been mentioned numerous times before that he is the perfect role model for up and coming young footballers. I cannot think of any center half in the Prem who would improve our defence if they replaced Ryan. In my opinion calling our captain a legend is not going overboard. Long may it continue.

Are you Woy Hodgson?

If that's your attitude Geoff then to me it seems pretty pointless you even contributing to a passionate and partisan football message board. To be honest, you're boring the pants off me. You're like those dullards on the Sunday Supplement.

Hey Geoff, you do realise it is actually possible to evaluate your club or player from an unbiased viewpoint, right?
People do have the potential to show a bit of modesty. You should try it one day.

I've been thinking it for a while but after reading this I now know you're taking the piss. Jones, Smalling and indeed Evans as well, were absolutely dogshit and their defensive frailties were there for all to see. Losing out on almost every header and getting beaten to a ball that is 70/30 in your favour has nothing to do with a system - it's about being wank defenders. Let's put it this way, Ryan would still look a great defender in that system.

Not according to him. You have to be 100% neutral to be able to give a balanced opinion. Obviously Geoff is without doubt a neutral and not on a massive wind up at all.....

Whilst Ryan did well against Costa in the main,he still had two gilt edged chances that normally he would finish,so I wouldn't exactly say that he had him in his pocket. Like I said I wasn't trying to down play Ryan's achievements this season or last season because he has undoubtedly been our best and most influential performer. He has grown into a complete centre half under Hughes and was my man of the match yesterday Johnno. The only downside to his consistently good performances is that people are starting to sit up and take notice,so I don't think we will have his services for too much longer,in fact I'd be surprised if he is still a Stoke player next season.

Of course geoff, the system made their defenders let balls bounce all over the final third instead of attacking it like a proper defender would do. The system made them look like they'd never seen a football in their life never mind head one. You have immense sticking power in your wind ups I'll give you that.......

Firstly each side conceded from a set piece, Ryan in my view wasn't faultless for their goal, I also think he was holding just before the Crouch/Smalling incident, but I will watch it again just to be sure on that point.
The difficulty for United in the second half was partly down to good Stoke play, some long balls, the wind and of course the height of the Stoke team, but you are correct the United defenders made mistakes as well.
In general the conditions and type of game suited Stoke and players like Shawcross, of course playing in Spain/Italy etc for England on a dry pitch with the ball on the ground my be a different matter.
It's just opinions prestwich and different views are healthy.

In my time watching Stoke I've seen some top notch centre halves, such as Smith, Watson, Doyle, Dodd, Bould.
Ryan is right up there with the best of them and when Denis Smith says Ryan is a top class CH then that's good enough for me.
Ryan is an immense part of Stoke's current journey to becoming an established, top half Premier side.
Love the lad to bits.
Up The Potters!
