For some reason the Marc Goodfellow thread got me thinking about Oussama. In the summer we agreed a fee with Liverpool to sign him but after weeks of trying we were unable to agree personal terms with the Moroccan. Determined not to lose him we signed an agreement to loan him for a 2nd season. We weren't going in blind here, we had him on loan the previous season so we knew exactly what we were getting. Everything points to us having been very keen to secure his services. Here is the part I don't get. Now we have him once again there does not seem to be any appetite from management to actually play him at all. I'm not saying they are wrong, to me he seems good with a football but not really a footballer, but why go through hoops to get him and then not play him? We could instead have signed someone we did want

Yes on reflection that does sound right, but I don't think it entirely negates the question, when Wingie got injured why didn't we get someone as a replacement we did want instead, or at least someone we might want, rather than someone we know all about and who clearly we don't much want if you see what I mean?

I just think it was an easy go-to cover move. Maybe previously we were pushing for the perm deal, or wouldn't budge on a payment issue for the loan which we were much more flexible about when we suddenly needed cover. I don't think there's any indication Les doesn't fancy him, others have just kept him out of the team. He'll get some pitch time now for sure.

Moses was his replacement, Odem got injured and we needed someone in asap, I think Hughes etc decided to give up on him before that happened, no inside info etc, just how I see it, he never was good enough to be a regular starter anyway, dodged a bullet, perm signing wise.

I think its all down to knowing about him already, if worst comes to worst and he has to start at least Hughes already knows what he can and can't do, and when desperate he can do a job there, it makes it a little easier to work the team around, rather than risking it on someone else that they know next to nothing about.

Has everyone forgotten the (winning) goal against Chelsea? One of the greatest ever seen at the Brit. This wasn't intended to be about what the fans think of him, more a case of the management going out on a limb to sign him but then strangely (to me at least) not willing to really trust him. So why re-sign him in the first place was my question.

Wingie got injured, we couldn't get Lennon, it was a mutually convenient move for both parties.
Decent option to have in the squad as he's quick and direct, but thank Christ we didn't pay £7m for him.

And if he gets the chance to shine and we do want him on a permanent basis, then it shouldn't be anywhere near the £7m mark I think that he began to work well in our set up last season, especially tracking back when needed We haven't seen what he has to offer with Bojan and Diouf in the team I'm not too sure that Moses will be here next season. Good opportunity for both Arnie and him to compete for a place in the starting 11 Assaidi can't play tomorrow so advantage Arnie as he has the chance to secure the spot

But we were willing to pay £7m in the summer just gone and the only stumbling block was agreeing terms with the player. But I bet when this summer comes around we won't be willing to pay £7m again or indeed trying to make the signing permanent at all. It just feels like somehow between then (the summer) and now we have just given up on him. Or do you think I am wrong and we will be trying again next summer (or even in January) to make him our player? Perhaps 'given up on him' is the wrong phrase and I should have said 'only see him as cover' but we are not the sort of club that is in a position to chuck £7m around on a bit part player.

No I think that's spot on Gods. I also think our negotiations with him may well have soured us on any kind of permanent deal.

It must have been a kick in the nuts when we walked away. He was no doubt to blame but it can't make him feel particularly wanted. Does the fact that we haven't seen much of him point to an attitude issue ??

I wouldn't be disappointed if we signed him on reasonable terms in january. His stock won't be too high at that stage, a good second half of the season and his demands {and head} might expand {again}. I don't really hold the 'wages demand' thing against him. He wouldn't be the first footballer to be poorly advised, and I think there's a bit of a whiff of the arrogant transfer lunacy of LFC about the situation. Thankfully we havn't been taken for mugs, he knows our parameters. I'd be happy to start afresh. It's difficult to make a judgement call this season, he was marginalised at Liverpool, had no preseason as I understood it. I wasn't expecting him to break straight into the team. More about Moses' performances, and Assaidi's unpreparedness than some kind of fickle management. He seems to be the type of skilful/tricky player who picks up knocks, gets nobbled, and will probably always need rotating and protecting. He's one-footed to the point of predictability, and defenders with nouse can snuff him out. But he's pretty rapid and threatening, when he gets a bit of space his delivery is as sweet as you'll see. His buzzing about wins corners and fre kicks etc.. Great to have as a sub against tiring defences. He has tuffened up a tad, and puts more defensive effort in since being with us. He looked great on his return at the tail end of last season. As with a lot of players it's about coaxing out the good stuff more consistantly. I'd like to see more of him on the right too, I think he has the potential to be a Pennant type. I realise that the inverted winger is in vogue, but since he was seemingly brought in to cover for Odemwingie, I thought that was part of the intention. Diouf was given a go, and now SJW has grasped it. We obviously need competition, I'm confident Assaidi will make and score a few more pearlers for us. Signing him would free up a loan spot too. What's he done so far: something like one sub appearance, one assist? Come on Assaidi.
