So how do you explain the historically low attendances ?, Port Vale the broken earthenware of potteries football small time scrounging out fit.

You mean like the banks ?
I suppose so, more relevant to this particular thread maybe I should have asked your opinions on local councils using tax payers money rather than central government, I presume that the banks will have some agreement to pay the back the public money loaned to them, I wonder if the same applies to the money given to Port Vale by Pervez and co

Firstly slayer I think you need to do your homework about the banks/bankers issues.
Regarding Vale, I would imagine the Council weighed up the money required to keep the club going compared to the problems it might face if they went out of business, those problems might have been both political and economic, but that's just my view.

You also have to remember that Stoke on Trent City Council actually went into business with Stoke City Football Club at one stage......with Tax Payers' money. This at a time when there were no guarantees about returns etc. Indeed investing in a football club at Stoke's level (at the time) was a very controversial and risky thing to do. They came out of it ok but, as a Stoke fan, I'd never want to 'tackle' the Council about it's loan to Port Vale.

One has to admit that prices for lower tier football are disproportionate compared to 'Prem' soccer or even a Sky/Virgin/BT annual subscription. O.K. the overheads are similar for the clubs but unless you're a diehard fan, who would choose to spend £20 a ticket plus travel, parking, eating, drinking, programme costs? A visit to Stoke to watch Man Utd on an EBST is cheaper than turning up 'on spec' to watch globe trotting Stockport!

I agree doz, but I think a lot of people found it ironic that the council essentially saved Vale after years of some Vale fans continually slagging Stoke and The Brit off. To be fair, I know quite a few Vale fans and I prefer to talk to them about football rather than Man Utd/Chelsea fans from Biddulph!

I went to see them last season with a mate who was a vale fan (took him for his birthday) and to be honest it was okay it certainly better than sitting around and doing nothing but the price was ridiculous for the standard of football on show so I doubt I'll do it again.

Got a six year old grandson who's Vale nuts (his dad's fault). I HAVE to speak well of them or I'm in trouble.

In comparison Burton Albion charge £15 for standing. Bit of a difference compared to £26. Always enjoyable to watch the Brewers if Stoke aren't playing. Going back to Vale, Vale Park is far too big and probably a millstone round their neck. A move to a stadium along the lines of Rotherhams might be a solution for them.

I'm led to believe that Neil Aspin is their No.1 target for the manager's post but they cannot afford the compensation.....from Halifax!

If I remember correctly the Council actually profited from the investment they made in Stoke City Football Club with tax payers money , so in effect that investment reaped rewards for the council tax payers of the area, on the other hand will the investment made by the Council in Port Vale FC be repaid at all time will tell, it would appear that rather than an investment it was a bail out.

And what problems would they have been for the Council ?, throwing good money after bad is not a sensible strategy in any business but that might not be the case when it is not your own money, but that's just my view .

I have got nothing but praise for the Vale fans who put there hand in there pocket week after week it would be much easier for them to just go down the prem bandwagon. We has a club when in the lower divisions are not the best supported unless we are going for promotion. Been in the boothen many a cold wet night with enough room to have your own game.

When we as a club were in a lower league than the Vile we still had higher attendances , all Council tax payers in S-o-T had to put our hands in our pockets to keep this horrible club afloat so leave off the praise for the scummers , by the way I know of quite a few who have changed allegiances to the mighty potters since we reached the prem.

But Freddie Steele was the manager so he would have helped you with your guilt. Roy Sproson was the manager that season I think you will find or possibly Bobby Smith, long time ago but they were shite then as well, Freddie was related to my dad so that may have put a different slant on things, the attendances were about the same as now so things have not really changed that much in that time were shit then still shit now, insignificant little tin pot club time to go for me Vale fan.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they need over 5000 just to break even. I'm sure there was more to Adams leaving than was ever made public. I agree especially to then go and manage Tranmere who are struggling in league 2.

Fair play to those that turned up. Team playing crap, dreadful weather, stupid prices. Rather give credit to a hardy Vale fan than a low life glory hunter....

My next door neighbour is a staunch Vale fan who braved the elements. No giving it large anymore it seems, their one and only current aspiration is to stay in business, which now seems sadly more and more unlikely.
