Why did we sit so deep and counter attack at home.
i like Hughes so this is not a Hughes bashing thread but I am concerned against better opposition we will be vulnerable at home.

Because we knew Newcastle were going to attack. They're desperate for points and won't play for a draw with the current discontent amongst their fans.
We could and should have scored more.
Newcastle on the other hand only mustered 2 decent chances in the whole game.
So overall, a good strategy I'd say.
Also, we went more offensive in the last two home games (with Bojan playing) and look what happened there.
We're not a team that is going to dominate possession and pile pressure on for 90 minutes.
We played on the counter v Man City and yesterday, winning both games. I'd rather therefore play to our strengths and take the 3 points.

Angry.

Sparky seemed to reckon that Newcastle did a good job of pressing us hard high up the pitch so we were not easily able to build from the back so I guess he is suggesting sitting back was not entirely our own choice last night. The other thing is that, unlike the Leicester and Villa home games, we actually got the first goal and so did not need to go chasing the game. Bit nerve wracking at the end though I have to say, I was fearing QPR mark II but thankfully the late goal never came

I totally agree with villa and Leicester games !
I was just surprised how we set up because we are not that solid at the back to absorb pressure !
Anyway good 3 points !

We look far better if teams attack us as we are set up to hit on the break with the pace of Moses.

We're not bad at the back mate. 5 conceded in 6 games, only Southampton with 4 have conceded fewer in the whole Prem. Those goals conceded have felt more painful than they should have done since they almost always fatal for us since we continue to score too few of our own!

And that for me in a nutshell is our challenge this season - score more goals without at the same time screwing up the defence

I don't want Hughes out !!!!
i also take on board that we may have been pinned back and that we have only conceded 5 goals.
had the red head kid taken the chance we would be 1 from 9'at home , sure Moses and Arnie had good chances as we'll but we are going to have to generate a lot chances as the season progresses because we don't convert to many

I actually think we will be better against the big boys at home because they will come looking for the win, leaving opportunities and space in behind them for our boys to hit them on the counter. Its the smaller clubs who I am worried about, particularly the ones who are going to park the bus and look to hit us on the break themselves (clubs like Leicester and Villa).

probably because we've looked a hell of a lot more like creating clear cut chances with our away tactics than at home against two teams who would have been happy to sit back and take a point.
took advantage of a manager desperately in need of a win to allow us to use our pace which we weren't really able to do against villa and leicester.

OP raises a good question.
We have transformed ourselves into a counter attacking side which is great when teams let us do that. When they don't, we seem a lot less sure of ourselves and you get games like Villa, Hull and to a lesser extent Leicester.
We're not going to be able to play on the break every home game.

We are a counter attacking team. It's not so much that we're shit at forcing the pace we simply cannot do it. That is part of the reason that despite all his class I can't get aboard the N'Zonzi love train and why I suspect he will never get his very big move.

Don't worry, someones going to get a pasting soon. This is correct. It will all click into place soon and we will stick 4 or 5 past someone. I still believe we will better last seasons points tally, and I don't think were purposely playing counter attacking football, especially at home,we just haven't clicked into top gear yet. It is something we are able to use now that we have genuine pace in the side but I'm not convinced it is seen as our main tactic.

You can't play counter attacking football at home on a regular basis and be successful. We have to mix and match according to how the opposition set up and we have to expect some teams will come and park the bus.
Away from home is a different matter and I expect us to have our best away season since we got promoted

I can see us scoring a few against Sunderland on Saturday.
Hopefully another Villa-esque performance.

Do you class 1-0 as a pasting March? 1-0 is regulation. 2-0 is a proper drubbing
