So who was at Villa Park the night Nello played ? I was there and from my memory we packed the away end which was directly opposite a very sparsely populated Holte End ! I also seem to remember a certain Martin Carruthers playing for Villa...... And scoring

After tonight THAT testimonial could acquire the status of the Sex Pistols gig at the Free Trade Hall..... everyone will claim to have been there!

According to Lou, Nello had TK by the throat in the dressing room after the game, telling him that he'd ruined his big chance.
What a clown. (TK that is, not Nello).

Yep, I was there. Great night. We were still enjoying the glow of promotion and took quite a big following considering the game. Seem to remember the rest of the ground was fairly empty. The old Holte End before it was knocked down was very impressive. Can't remember the score, but do remember Nello coming on.

I remember him being in one of his many 1 on 1 positions at Tranmere...... And actually burying it We didn't know whether to laugh or celebrate !!

Think it was 3-1 to the Villa, if I remember right And Martin Carruthers, to use a modern term, actually came on and tore us a new one, that night. It was a great night and, not surprisingly, we got a great show of appreciation from Sid Cowans as he walked off the pitch. must have been 2-3000 of us for "somebody else's" testimonial. Happy Days! Who says the Prem is the place to be?

I was there and I seem to remember Stoke fans made up a large proportion of the crowd, like everyone else Icouldn't believe TK rammed Nello out of the way to score!

I was there! Brilliant laugh, couldn't believe it when Nello actually came on after we'd chanted for him...think the villa fans wondered what an earth was going on!!!

I was there. I seem to recall that the score was 4-1
I also remember that when Nello had come on, all the players seemed to be working on creating a chance for him to score, and it seemed that Tony Kelly hadn't read the script. If memory serves, he intercepted a pass to him and tried to score himself, then missed.

I was there in the lower tier of the seats in the end opposite the Holte End. A cracking atmosphere, I bet the Villa fans didn't really know what to make of it. Will it feature in Marvellous I wonder?
Carruthers was an FA Youth Cup winner with Villa and an exciting prospect, or so we thought. Mazy dribble to force yourself into the box, powder puff shot and fall on your arse. Textbook.
By the way, there wasn't meant to be innuendo in that last paragraph.

I went with my Dad and brother, didn't Tony Kelly (the less weighty and less skillful one) take the ball off him and try to score. My memory is a bit hazy but I remember most Stokies were livid.

I remember the crowd being abysmal for such a good servant for Villa, wasn't it 5,000 or something daft with a decent following of Stokies as well??

Massive following from Stoke for a friendly, Cowans face was lit up with us at the end and showed his appreciation to which Stoke fans gave back. Martin Carruthers tore us a new one and Nello coming on was hilarious. Great night and one of the best last minute decisions I've made

Yep. I remember it being a really poor show from Villa fans and I would have said we took 3 to 4 thousand. Filled the lower tier anyway. Don't know how many that holds ?? We were on a high though just after promotion to the championship so a short trip down the M6 to a Prem team was a must I soppose.

I'd have guessed that we took about 2k and that it was 5k in total.
Pretty poor from them really.
My recollection was that it was that bad from Tony Kelly that it wasn't obvious what on earth he was trying to do. I think he was trying to control it for Nello but just fucked it up and then a Villa defender just cleared it.
I was a student in Birmingham at the time so I took a couple of mates who followed other clubs and they were pissing themselves at the whole Nello cameo.
Superb programme last night as well.
