this was a testimonial that i did not go to, sadly testimonials have always been poorly attended at The Villa off the top of my head, john Robson's Villa v Midlands 11 for MS got about 18,000, 'God's' v blues 12,000 ish[ and most of us went for our own 'reason's'], i cant explain why in general but the Sid game v you lot was a case of typical bad timing by The Villa, we had just all but blown our chances of winning the league, it was a monday night, and meaning no disrespect after stuffing most premier league sides that season you were not the most attractive opposition, but as it turned out you were a great choice of team to play because without your turnout Sid would of made little or f*** all, from memory i think the crowd was about 5-6,000 of which at least 50% were Stokies, Sid has said many times how grateful he was for your support

I was there - in the main Villa stand with 2 mates who were Baggies fans (god knows how I convinced them to go!). When Nello came on 1 of my mates said " Who's that fat F**ker!"

I'd have guessed that we took about 2k and that it was 5k in total. Pretty poor from them really. My recollection was that it was that bad from Tony Kelly that it wasn't obvious what on earth he was trying to do. I think he was trying to control it for Nello but just fucked it up and then a Villa defender just cleared it. I was a student in Birmingham at the time so I took a couple of mates who followed other clubs and they were pissing themselves at the whole Nello cameo. Superb programme last night as well. Whatever TK was trying to do, it wasn't control it. He blazed it high and wide of an empty net!!!

I was there and Tony Kelly WAS that thick that he didn't notice that everyone had moved aside for Nello and he was that shit that even though he had all of the time in the world he got in Nello's way and miss-hit the ball.... Would have been a great moment if Nello had scored.
I think Cowans was a bit fed up with the Villa "faithful" as he spent most of the time at the end of the game with his microphone thanking us not the paltry Villa attendance.
The other thing I remember was a bloke sitting behind getting wound up all night by David Platt - he kept shouting at Platt telling him to stop moving about all the time because it was only a friendly ( he may be Mr Balloon head now but Platt was a top class player!)
It was a fun evening.

It was my Third ever away game, what a great night. My Dad took me down there and we parked on the Aston Villa Leisure Centre Car Park, expected it to be packed by Villa Fans, but it was eerily quiet outside the ground. I remember I was quite embarrassed for the Villa as there was nearly no one there that night for them. I think it was the season that they had just missed out on the premier league, piped by 'the shit'. I wondered at the time what was so special about Nello coming on, but it wasn't half funny. I think everyone in the ground wanted him to score except TK. There seemed to be loads of us there, we filled that lower tear, and many songs were sung, especially for a friendly. I was glad to have had the chance to see the Holte End before it was knocked down, that was a huge stand. Yes, we were outclassed and MC tore us a new one (as already said above) shame he could never finish like he did then for us...

What contradictory memories TK left us with. A moment of genius to nutmeg Grobbelar at Anfield, versus being shitter than Nello at finishing at Villa Park.

I enjoyed the night, but me and my lad would have killed TK if we could have got hold of him. Grrrr! OS.
