Ang when you next have a word with Bego[like you did yesterday before the game]tell him Wilson and Pieters need a rocket up their arse and remind them to mark men not SPACE. The subs were far too late correct Also was Sidwell injured?

Yeah, where has Sidwell gone? Unfit or just way down the pecking order? I'd still go for Whelan and Nzonzi in the middle though, to be fair.

The biggest worry for me from yesterday was that we had so much possession and so many half chances yet unable to put any of them away
It was mentioned on here (the Oatcake) by Wuzza earlier today that our attacking players are hugely enigmatic. It's no surprise really when you think that they are largely made up of cheap, free and loan transfers with just Crouch (our pre-recession signing) arguably the only consistent performer (and at 33 that IS a worry)
People scoff at the money spent players like Shane Long but the reality is that top strikers are like gold dust and come at a price that not only reflects that fact but also appears to be well beyond the means of Stoke City. It's no coincidence that Chelsea are already running away with the league and that Liverpool are unable to do any better than we did against Villa without Suarez.

First time I've ever heard that substitutions should be made on the basis of how long you've been at the club.

I was disappointed with Hughes yesterday with the subs. The team was crying out for Adam and Arnautovic.
The Pieters sub was the perfect opportunity, at 1-0 down, to go with 3 at the back for the last 10 minutes and put on an extra forward. To replace like for like with a visibly unfit Muniesa was baffling.

Hughes has to take the blame. It wad clear at half time that we were never going to score in a month of sundays.
Better service was needed, and the two individuals that we have who not only have the vision but also the ability to create were left on the bench all game. Leaving Arnie out was a horrific decision.

Good point re team attitude - while players are having to "play for their place" then each game may be regarded as a trial?
I agree try and keep the nucleus of the team together now - yesterday was extremely frustrating but the attacking play was good - a bit more pace from defence to attack please and some variety re corners.
Hughes will turn this round

Gareth, I'll take you up on that Diouf 10 goal season, no problem

I like Diouf but he isnt a lone striker, his touch & control simply isnt good enough. I think Hughes should use him as he did against City or part as a front 2.

Thought Assaidi looked reasonably sharp when he came on, plus I'd imagine Hughes was hoping he'd be able to do his famous cut-inside and let one rip, which we were desperately in need of by the time he got on the pitch.
As far as teams shutting up shop is concerned, there are only a limited number who will be able to, or inclined to play that way. There'll also be a time where we manage to get the first goal, and then we'll see the team at its best.
I agree with most people though. We were crying out for Arnie for the whole game yesterday.

Charlie Adam, second highest goal scorer last season. Can't a get a start against Leicester at home. He should be on - dictates tempo, get shots away and on target to makes things happen.

I really like Adam AND like others he should of been brought on, 100%. BUT let's not kid ourselves he's not some Demi god and with him we may have struggled too.

I agree that the game was crying out for Adam, but as the referee seemed rather card happy as far as Stoke players were concerned, then it did make me think again re taking the risk

I thought Crouch / Walters played well however Crouch hasnt scored since March & Walters just isnt a winger. As much as I love seeing passion & fight, goals are more important and they both arent contributing.
Last season Hughes had a winning formula which was destroying teams on a weekly basis. I think hes trying to much to soon.

Bunny and Ang did either of you hear anything about Arnie yesterday apparently falling out with Hughes on Friday?

Clearly no one is too sure if Diouf will or won't get the necessary goals and thus is yet another low cost / high gamble player albeit one that shows promise and was missed yesterday. Add to that with the loss of Odemwingie, Ireland's injury and Arnies inconsistencies we played without four players who have made or have the potential to make and score goals.
Stephen Ireland played a big part in those excellent performances at the end of last season so like him or not he is one of only two attacking midfield players we have and I think we miss him.

I do think that Management have a serious and very challenging problem on their hands ... with opposing teams seem to have sussed out how to stop us at our own home ground. two modest teams have visited the Brit so far and both have stopped us scoring and both have snatched a goal early in the second half with us being unable to do something about it on both occasions. The challenge Management have is their ability or inability to change tactics when plan A is clearly not working as happened yesterday and against Villa.
So while Mark Hughes said in public that he thought Stoke played well yesterday, he would in reality be a very worried man with what his team has produced so far at home. A good home form is a must and at least will guarantee survival in this league. So having lost 2 from 2 at home will lead to internal crisis meetings to find out the best formation and tactics to use to start winning at home again.

its pot luck off a corner when all the opposition are in the 18 yard box with at least 6 of them in the 6 yard box

People crying out for Assaidi over Arnie? Do people forget who along with Odemwingie changed our season?.
Moses decision making is terrible along with his service. Good at beating players though.

Why when players dont get picked i.e Sidwell do they leave the ground before kick off? You would think that any player fully committed to Stoke City would want to hang around and watch the game.

Who was Walters man yesterday to mark? Oh yes the guy who crossed for their goal. If Arnie had let his opposing fullback have the time that Konchesky was allowed there would have been a meltdown on this board about what an idle fucker Arnie is!! I don't normally like to criticise individuals but the bare facts are that Walters contributed very little to the cause yesterday. If either Arnie or Assaidi had started yesterday instead of Walters we wouldn't have lost.

i agree about Bego ... he's been my favourite player at Stoke for the last few seasons but i fully agree that his confidence has been hit since he's been to the world cup ... unless it's his concentration... maybe he thought a big club would come in for him but didn't or maybe some of his recent mistakes for Bosnia have affected him ... whatever it is he's having the worst run since he's been our no 1.... here's hoping he's back to his best in the next match!

I think that Hughes hinted that Ireland would be ready to return.
I expect Bojan to drop to the bench - Diouf to start, meaning Walters also to the bench as I think that Hughes will stick with Whelan and N'Zonzi.
I would stick with Crouch
Wonder if Arnie isn't working hard enough off the pitch?
So
Bego, Bardsley. Shawcross, Wilson, Pieters Nzonzi, Ireland, Whelan
Moses Crouch, Diouf
Subs earlier if this isn't working
