Shawcross' 300th appearance for the club can't be too far away. It'd be nice if it was at home versus Arsenal. Congratulations Glenn. Great achievement. Our Ryan has played 206 Premier League games for us plus 41 in the Championship. His total for us, including Cup matches, is 288 Who will number 300 be then?

200+ appearances in all competitions and Glenn Whelan has never once let us down.
He might have played poorly at times but he's always bounced back, fought for his place and made himself almost indispensible.
There aren't many players you can say that about!
Whelan, Whelan, Whelan, Whelan!

He has been "replaced" at least 10 times and still we've found no one better than him. ' Played Glenn!

He is basically our last player who played for us in the Championship bar Ryan who was always deemed to be better than the Championship (as indeed he is). (Wilko must be third choice now and is kept more through loyalty and cheapness). I think he struggles to overcome that starting point as far as his reputation is concerned with fans.
He keeps earning his place in the side and none of us can doubt his professionalism or commitment. He has been an excellent servant of the club.

I have to say, I was one for getting rid once we got Hughes in. I thought that he was a product of Pulis and suffered like Walters has by being played consistently even if he didn't deserve his place due to performances....but last season he was excellent and has been so far this season. Absolute bargain at 500k and is a very unsung hero. Well done lad

If Glenn is selected for Saturday's match it will be his 200th League appearance for the club. A bargain signing at £500,000, Glenn has been with us since the second half of our promotion winning season. Sometimes he divides supporter opinion, and I keep reading about an "upgrade" for one of our longest serving current players, but it seems to me that when Glenn Whelan plays well, Stoke City play well. He is an excellent professional and an underated footballer. He reminds me a little of John Mahoney in Waddington's team of the 1970's: an unfussy player who gets on with his job while other players grab the limelight. Well played and congratulations Glenn. You are a credit to Stoke City Football Club. Good post and a great servant to the Club and for only £500k - good post and liked it but shows that I dislike it and it won't change but should be a like from me

£500k for a player from a lower league club who goes on to win 50+ international caps is a most "un Stoke" way of doing business! One of TP's better ideas, it has to be said.

He's one of those players who just seems to have learned from the better technical players around him while keeping the street fighter mentality of a lower league player.
Never in the headlines really, either for good or bad reasons, he just seems totally focused on making the most of what he has.

I reckon he's also the hardest bastard in the squad. I'd back him against Huth, Adam, Shawcross, Bego. He'd just keep getting back up. Instead of all those poxy chef challenges, why don't they organise player cage fights?

People were surprised when Trapattoni made Whelan a key figure in the Ireland side playing a deeper role. Stokies didn't appreciate how talented Whelan is at that job. He does the same role for Stoke now and its a great fit. I think Stoke fans took Whelan for granted and are finally starting to figure out what a great player he is for Stoke and long may it continue! The main thing with Whelan is his mental toughness. He has had his knocks and come back stronger. Credit to him. Lets not forget some of his last minute / late goals. 2 of my favourite mentals EVER have come because of Glenn at Spurs away 0-1 and the Villa 2-2.

I have my whinge ups about Glenn Whelan and he frustrates the hell out of me at times, but for 500K he's proved a tremendous bargain. He ups his game as soon as his place is under threat.
From what I saw of the Ireland match the other night, Whelan was there best player by a mile.

His work rate and covering is phenomenal. He's always the first man out to close down and I think its already been mentioned on here that when he plays well the team plays well.
