If Glenn is selected for Saturday's match it will be his 200th League appearance for the club.
A bargain signing at £500,000, Glenn has been with us since the second half of our promotion winning season.
Sometimes he divides supporter opinion, and I keep reading about an "upgrade" for one of our longest serving current players, but it seems to me that when Glenn Whelan plays well, Stoke City play well.
He is an excellent professional and an underated footballer. He reminds me a little of John Mahoney in Waddington's team of the 1970's: an unfussy player who gets on with his job while other players grab the limelight.
Well played and congratulations Glenn. You are a credit to Stoke City Football Club.

The comparison to Mahoney is very apt - not so much for their style of play as in their "unsung hero" status. Both were guys who got on with their jobs with the minimum of fuss. Both frustrated me at times when they had an off day but both have been great servants of the club. 200 League games for one club was common in Mahoney's time but is becoming a rarity these days. Skeels was a similar player to Whelan - understated might be the best one word description of both men.
Well done Glenn

When a palyer deserves to play he should play, and right now he deserves to as he did last season when he was one of our most consistent players.

People know my feelings towards Glenn Whelan so I won't bother again
Suffice to say he has been one of SCFCs best ever signings given the price and what he has been a pivotal part of
Take a bow son

Whenever he's been dropped, not once has he complained. He's taken it on the chin, got his head down and worked his bollocks off to get back into the side.
At £500k, and for the highly disciplined role that's asked of him to play, a role Jack "World Class when fit" Wilshere couldn't play last night, and the fact that he played excellent in this role last season, he's been a bargain and credit to the club. Some of the abuse he gets is totally undeserved and downright moronic.
Everytime someone mentions that we've outgrown him or he isn't good enough, he takes another step up.
Glenn Whelan: Stoke's unsung hero.

John Mahoney's two footed sliding tackles were ace. Always perfectly timed and never any intent to break an opponents leg or injure them. Unfortunately the garlic crunching French tart has ensured that these tackles are outlawed.

Yes all successful teams seem to have this player who sits in front of the back line and does all the dirty work that goes unnoticed.Claude Makaleli may be a more recent comparison of a top class player in Glenn's position.Somebody said that he was a very good player without the ball which confused me at the time but I think it is quite a good assessment of Glenn's skills . He reads the game very well and anticipates where the danger may arise.

Superb bit of business for £500k. Those who know me know that I'm not Whelan's biggest fan, but he's reinvented himself under Hughes after quite a laboured 12 months under Pulis' last season. That said pound for pound he's got to be one of our best ever signings, he should be made captain for the day if selected.....

Consumate professional, representing great value for money. I'll be honest and say at the end of Pulis' last season, I thought Glenn had come as far as he could with us, and we desperately needed to invest in some new dynamism in the middle of the park. However as others have said his step up under the Hughes regime has been fantastic to watch. He's basically been like a new signing for us which (given todays) market prices represents even greater value for money.
As an aside, a few people have mentioned he reads the game well and I agree, which suggests he has a good understanding of the machinations of a game (formations, tactics, positioning) etc. I would proffer that the complete change in training styles, and coaching under LMH suits a player of his ilk much more than the fitness based coaching of Pulis. Possibly a key reason for his transformation under the new management at the club.

Been a major part of our rise over the past 6 years or so from Championship to Premier League.
The back 4 must love to have Glenn in the team because he covers so much ground and do so much hard work.
Always liked Glenn - heres to 300 games!

I was a little worried when we sold John Eustace partway through the promotion season, but that proved to be an inspired decision, as shortly afterwards, we signed Glenn Whelan for what was then a big fee for Stoke of £500K.
I am proud to say 'I was there' when the wee Irishman popped in that vital equaliser at Villa Park in our initial Premier season, & that never to be forgotten winner at White Hart Lane in 2010.
Well done Glenn.

I've criticised whelan in the past. Mainly I think because I wanted a big strong athlete in midfield with the pace to get about quicker as at times he does seem to appear as he struggles when chasing back.
but over the last twelve months he's done well, and I can never really be too critical of someone that plays for us, cares about playing for us and never shirks from wanting to give 100% for us.

When you look back at players like Glen, Rory, Ric, Ryan & Co. they really did have (and Glen/Ryan still do) that Stoke DNA. I know it's great to see the fancy European players we now have, but getting someone from the Championship, getting promoted and then playing hundreds of games in the Prem, it really is something special.
Lets not forget that tragic day when Ramsay was lying on the pitch with a broken ankle and all hell was breaking out. The only person who gave any assistance to Ramsay was our Glen, holding his head and making sure he didn't move.
A true professional, who is a credit to our Club

The man is rapidly becoming a club icon.
Some have likened him to Skeels and Mahoney and they are good comparisons, I would like to add Paul Bracewell and Micky Bernard to that list. They are the engines of the team. Their work is hidden under the bonnet and they are only ever seen when things go wrong. However, without them the team as a whole never gets anywhere.
