I always prefer to buy a couple of orchards first. Just to test the PH levels you understand.

Bought myself a cider brewing kit and wondered if anyone else has made their own? looking for some tips I've brewed all manner of things, but never done cider. I looked into it one year as I had a massive glut of apples. As Bathstoke above suggests, I was under the impression that the only ingredient you need is apples, put under pressure through a press to extract the juice. The juice contains all the natural yeasts and sugars needed for the fermentation process. {Commercial cider includes 'stabilizers' and preservatives etc}. And there are plenty of myths/truths about cidermakers adding anything from chicken carcasses to dead rats to give it some 'body' or cloud. There was a programme featuring that moustachioed Dick Strawbridge fella, where he brewed his own, he also made his own non-alcoholic apple juice. The only difference was that he heated the apple juice, to essentially kill the natural yeasts, to stop it fermenting. I'm sure Huge Furry-Willingtool will have something to say on the subject, it may be worth having a scan of the River Cottage web page. I didn't bother with brewing cider, a press was too expensive to justify and a bit too technical to build to spec. It involves a screw to apply the required psi to squeeze the apples through muslincloth to extract the juice. Leaving you with a by-product of a 'cake' of the apple pulp, that's only any good for feeding to pigs. So it's a pretty wasteful process. I don't think a juicer would do the job, and for the amount of juice you'd need you'll require a juicer the size of a bath, or a lot of time and patience. You'd still have to filter it through muslin I reckon. Presumably your 'kit' will include instructions? I'm intrigued by what they say. I wouldn't have thought you can use cartons of apple juice as they will have gone through the heating/stopping process. Is this kit just apple flavoured lager, rather than actual cider? I don't wish to discourage you. I'm very interested in how you go on, and if this 'kit' is practical, please tell me the name of it, I'd love to have a go at it, it's looking like a good apple year. Now then, I'll get back to picking elderberries, and its sloe season soon. Mmmmmm gin.

Don't really like the fizzy stuff personally.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I came back to the UK one summer (maybe 2010?) and everybody was drinking the stuff with ice cubes in it. Then I switched the TV on at home and saw the reason why. Who says advertising doesn't work? Excellent campaign, it must be said.
It was the same in 1988 when everybody was drinking Sol with a chunk of lemon wedged in the bottle whilst there was snow on the ground and -2C outside.

When first met the mrs she was living in Burton Bradstock just outside Bridport. The. locals in the Dove Inn would drink pints of real scrumpy with a shot of gin on top. Bloody loopy juice. Excise Duty was not payable in those days, 1976, so remember scrumpy was around 30p a pint.
