The only changes I would make from yesterday would be Muniesa for Wilson, Cam for Bardsley and Moses for Arnie.

Diouf needs as many games as possible so needs to play. Other than that I expect wholesales changes, possibly a complete new back 4

It depends on the fatigue of players.
Diouf and Bojan look like they need game time. Same can be said for Moses and Odem.
In midfield, I expect Sidwell to have another run out, especially as Whelan is carrying a knock. If Palacios is going to play again it will be in this match.
At the back, Huth has to play if fit. I would have thought Wilko, Muniesa and Geoff will also feature.
Sorro in goal?
That"s a decent team and no room for Walters, Adam or Crouch.

The players who will start in the league desperately need confidence and time playing with one another. Particularly given so many new faces. Fucking around with the team every week isn't going to instil that.

We don't need 3 defensive mids mate.

Tommy Cameron Ryan Huth Pieters
ADAM MUNIESA IRELAND
Bojan Diouf Arnie
Really do think that Midfield needs to be tried Urgency and midfield fluency from Adam Improved passing ability and defencive quality from Muniesa Forward link up play from Ireland
All of the front three need to find the net to improve their confidence

I'd go with our best 11, or whatever Hughes perceives that to be.
The team need to gel properly and quickly. So more game time will benefit them.
Man City isn't a must win game so for that I'd select a side to sit back and strike (or attempt to) on the counter. Making the wingers run like crazy and sub them during the second half when they're tired.

For me id play...
Sorensen Cameron Huth Shawcross Muniesa Sidwell Nzonzi Moses Adam Odemwingie Diouf
Clearly Odemwingie needs some more game time, same for Moses also Diouf needs a goal. However I think he will play Teixeira in place of Shawcross, Crouch instead of Diouf, Walters instead if Odemwingie and Wilson or Palacios instead of Nzonzi.

I agree, at this time last season we'd played 2 Premier League matches going into a home League Cup match against Walsall. Hughes team for the game in the league against Palace was... Begovic Cameron Huth Shawcross Pieters Wilson Nzonzi Walters Adam Etherington Crouch Then for the League Cup tie... Sorensen Wilkinson Huth Shawcross Muniesa Whelan Palacios Pennant Adam Shea Jones So 8 changes for that one. Pompey are on a good run at the moment, won 4 on the trot and drew their first league game prior to that. I don't think they'll be the pushovers a few may expect them to be. I hope they are though. Not sure how Pennant's gonna play

I'd be treating this like a competitive pre-season game.
I think he has to start with what he think is his best side or as close to it. The only "squad" changes I'd make are Muniesa for Pieters and Moses for Arnie. Bego should probably play and Huth if fit has to be at centre half and if he isn't fit then it has to be Muniesa.
Bego
Bardsley Shawcross Huth Muniesa
Whelan N'Zonzi
Odemwingie Bojan Moses
Diouf

Diouf needs a goal so I'd definitely start him.
Maybe this is a game where you can play Adam in a deeper role as well, alongside Sidwell.

Selecting a team for this game got a whole lot tougher of late becuase so many of the first XI who've played so far look out of sorts. Do we give them more game time to get themselves going, or do we give time to the squad players to show their worth to either pressurise the regulars or be put in the shop window ahead of transfer deadline day?
I'd initially thought we'd go with the squad players, but now I'd like a bit of a mix 'n' match. Diouf has to play, as a goal would do him wonders, and I'd start Crouchy at Man City next Saturday. I'd make Arnie play, if he is fit enough, as he looks like he is still on holiday mentally. Shawcross needs to lead the team and partner Huth to restore their partnership ahead of Huth's impending return instead of Wilson (pleaasssseeeeeeeeeeeee!). I'd start Jack to give him game time to keep match ready ahead and interest potential suitors of a loan move.
Butland
Cameron Shawcross Huth Muniesa
Sidwell Adam
Moses Walters Arnautovic (Odemwingie if Arnie unfit)
Diouf

I could go for that Paul. I also wouldn't have a problem with a 4-4-2 with Crouch or Bojan partnering Diouf and Moses and PO out wide, or sticking with the current system and having Bojan in the hole behind MBD.

Don't see the point in playing Butland tbh. If Tommy is the sub 'keeper he needs the game.

I've never believed that a team needs two defensive midfield players. One should be enough as long as the back four are concentrating on defending first and foremost. One of the problems this season has been that the full backs are too far forward, in a wing back position. This leaves the two centre backs very exposed. (And if you want attacking full backs, then Cameron and Muniesa would be better choices.) I see no reason why Charlie Adam could not play just in front of such a formation, giving him the room to be creative. We also have to face the fact that we can't play both Adam and N'Zonzi. It's a bit like the Gerard/ Lampard dilemma that England used to have.

Ooops, that's better!! Butland Bardsley Tex Huth Muniesa Cameron Sidwell Odemwingie Bojan Arnie Walters id like to see cameron at cdm but I feel starting at rb would be better. 70 minute sub out adam, move cameron to mid and have Bardsley/Wilko finish up at rb. that an give Sorensen his due.

Morale needs lifting for everyone at the club and this is a game that we need to win. it will be great opportunity to give some match time to a number of players, but not at the expense of a positive result.
