Like so many on here, I am a born 'n' bred Stokie (Longton for 11 years, Trentham for 7 yrs), mum from Normacot, dad from Meir, mum's uncle played for Stoke, so did my dad as a youngster. I went to my first game aged 5 in 1974, and have been to hundreds since. Also like a lot of you, I have not lived in Stoke for a long time, since I left for uni at 18, and for the past 15 years I have lived abroad (and have probably only been to about 40 or so games in the flesh since then). Am I still a Stokie? Hell, yes I am. It is not location, it is in the blood, the heart, it is the people, the humour, the camaraderie. I am fortunate to now be able to watch every single league game on TV/PC, and to connect with so many fellow Stokies on facebook/twitter/oatie, and I am proud to be a part of the great global Stokie community.

I live in Co.Durham and have done for half my life, but in no way would i support another league team. Whats makes me a Stokie? Being proud of where i come from and how it nurtured me into what I am today.

I spent the first 10 years of my life living in Lytton St about half a mile from the Victoria ground so the roar of the crowd esp in the 62/3 season was an ever present. The primary school was also next door to the ground. ( I even recall them using sheep on the pitch to keep the grass down in around 64) I went to my first match in 62. The school also used the ground for sporting events. And that is more or less the reason why

Born in Knutton and not lived in Stoke for 32 years but its beyond comprehension calling myself anything other than a Potter - its just the way it is. Not surprised you left Knutton, heard it's worse than ever!!! Can't disagree, drove around the village last year - phew!

I tend to find that if you live/work outside the area, you become much more defensive of the place. Viva la Potteries This is true, we can run the place down but woe betide any 'outsider' who does.

Born and raised in Newcastle, but left for college and work. Now exiled in the land of Dingles and Baggies, but have successfully brainwashed the kids to follow in their dear old dad's football footsteps.

Pride for me I guess. Born and raised in the US, with no real football to watch for many years. I used to skip class in college just to catch Champs league games. God bless the internet I was able to watch real football on a regular basis a few years ago and decided I needed a team. Stoke for so many reasons fit. Even as a grown man here in the States I wear my stoke shirts around with pride (even though 99% of people have no clue what it is). I was in Boston a few months ago (my wife was in the marathon), I had my stoke away shirt on and a young boy walked by and I over heard him say "Hey mom, Stoke City". I was smiling the rest of the day.
Though for years I felt like a bit of a fraud, even though I read and learned as much as I could about the team, history and area. I was lucky enough to attend a home match last year, stay in the Potteries for a couple days, have an oatcake and sample the local pubs. So at least now I feel a bit more legitimate!!

Sorry, just the way my mind works. It's true about the misery though, but I still wouldn't change things. Well maybe a bit more happiness. :-) By the way, ask your dad what's happening with Diouf?

Dad is also kept up to date with the things being said on here, I'll print things off dad loves reading the threads … As a family we all love Stoke on Trent, the people of this city have always made us feel welcome and to us it's home.

So you've never actually lived in stoke then? That's a good point hb88. There's many, including me, who hail from Newcastle and other surrounding areas but never actually lived in Stoke on Trent. Are we still true Stokies? I think I am and when asked where I'm from always say Stoke and not Newcastle Under Lyme. Anybody else have this predicament? Yep.....I always say I'm from Stoke....if I said I was from Newcastle, they'd think I was a Geordie....and we simply CAN'T have that, innit!!??"
