When change comes sometimes it’s painful and can lead to all sorts of disaster, many were saying this is what could happen to Stoke City when we parted company with Tony Pulis. Though as it has proved it was best for everyone concerned, we have evolved into a football team who make people happy and Tone has done a wonderful job keeping Crystal Palace in the Premier league.
We had become stagnant and it seemed nothing would change Tony’s approach to how we played, it worked and he was content with it, we were never likely to be relegated but the football had become a chore not an enjoyment. There needed to be change before we fell into a complete coma.
Those who feared change or simply were content with what was on offer told anyone who would listen if we change managers we will sink like the Titanic on its maiden voyage. Remember Charlton became their mantra and be careful what you wish for. Thankfully Peter Coates realized that even the happiest marriage has bumps in the road and when they come along you either head to relate or you part amicably, thankfully he chose the latter.
Mark Hughes was not everyone’s cup of tea, the lingering memories of his last job left those thinking doom and gloom could only come from parting ways with Tone, had just had it confirmed. I wasn’t too worried after some thought, as his managerial record QPR aside was pretty impressive.
It started well, there were some bumps in the road and of course the inevitable mumblings of, we told you so, bring back Tone before it’s too late. It got worse as Tone took over at Palace and soon the worst was confirmed, we lost to them and it was only a matter of time before we slid into the drop zone. I even read and heard a few who believed we were down already.
Mark Hughes had said all along things will come right after Christmas, he was right. We began to see the benefits of what was being done on the training ground and finally we pace in the side. We also had players who could get people off their seats and do things you talked about all week something that so rarely happened in the previous 18 months. We created chances, played football that put a smile on your face and people were wishing the weekend to come. I have to say for much of last season I was dreading yet another tedious 90 minutes hoping for the best.
Mark Hughes took over with certain criteria expected from supporters and owners.
He was asked to improve the football, he has done that in spades, yes we stumbled and stuttered but we have played some wonderful football this season.
The magical top ten finish not sure we expected that this year but he achieved it and broke 50 points in the process. We finished 9th you know. More importantly we did it in style. Something we were constantly told just could not happen.
This was all achieved with pretty much the same squad who had bored us almost into a coma for 18 months. Though he wasn't given millions to spend he managed to bring a few in and allowed some to express themselves and take a chance going forward. Then he signed the catalyst for the new approach Marko, a maverick, who seems to have found a home. The players play with a smile on their faces, they seem to once again believe in what they are being asked to do. I am not criticizing Tony Pulis he did a magnificent job as manager and established us as a Premier League side but we needed to change and evolve and sadly evolution needed a change of direction and fresh thinking on how we approached it. I just can’t imagine Marko in a Pulis team, Ricardo apart he seemed to struggle with flair players. The summer is now a vital time, Peter Coates needs to loosen the purse strings a little, we need a quality forward who can take the chances we now create in abundance, a few other areas need to be tinkered with so we can maintain our new found status as a top ten club. It won’t be easy but if this season is anything to go by it will be enjoyable and entertaining. I don’t think any supporters realistically expected us to finish 9th and it may be about as high as we can achieve next year also but it’s how you go about it that will keep people happy.
Thank you to Mark Hughes and the players I am in love with football once more.

Couldn't agree more, most enjoyable season in a very, very long time.
Positive in our intent from the first game to the last and that was all i really wanted.
hopefully the board back hughes to bring in a target man with a bit more pace and power about him than Crouchie as that will really make us a tough proposition for any opponent.

Talking of the Palace away game (which was pretty crap to be fair), where is that bloke who was sitting directly behind me in the away end who frankly, appeared to be having an alcohol induced mental breakdown, screaming at the Stoke dug out saying that we were relegated and Hughes was the biggest **** ever to set foot inside Stoke City FC.

Have to agree with that.
Ive been absent from games for a few years now (ironically the first year in the prem was my last at games due to finances), but i watched every game on stream and kept up to date with what was going on. Last year did it for me, i couldnt bare to watch (not just stoke) but any football, id had my fill, what i saw watching Stoke creeped into any other football and with 3 young children (one of which is disabled and has a multitude of health problems i couldnt bring myself to spend another minute watching the tripe. (Call me what you will but after nearly 20 years id had enough). So up until the last few weeks i havent watched more than an hour of football this season.
Then i had some mates around and they put the footie on and low and behold, the Stoke i was used to (even back to Coates' woeful days in charge the first time round) had disappeared, and i havent been that excited watching Stoke since Hoekstra or Thorne were giving me reason to cheer.
Well done to all and im now hanging my head in shame at giving up so easily on the club i was brought up to watch, repsect and most importantly love

Nice one, Ted. Was well worth wading through one of your magnum opuses. And Kristoff... good to see you back again. You pretty much echo many of my own sentiments. I was falling out of love with football big style - I still hate what The Prem has become - but what I've seen from Hughes (especially during the latter half of the season) is a breath of fresh air. So much so, that I've actually eaten a lot of humble pie this morning. Because of the problems I've had with my disabled situation this season, I said that was the end for me. But my lad took a phone call from the new Customer Services guy (Anthony Emmerson - a grand lad) and this morning I've been down to the club and received both an oral and written apology for the way I've been treated. So I've renewed all six of our season tickets, and for the first time in years, I can't wait for the new season to begin. Hopefully... onward and upward... but I'm like a cat who's swallowed the cream at the way we ended the season. I even managed to stay awake and watch developments with Jeff Stelling, and when the winner went in I nearly swallowed my false teeth! OS.

Those of us who were TP disciples like me until that fateful game at Swansea a couple of winters ago can only sit here with smiles on there faces that the right decision was made. Like Ted said and indeed the winner of the fan of the year award said last tuesday at the awards dinner on stage "Thank you Mark for giving me back the happiness of watching my club" I for one couldn't have put it better and what a raucous cheer it received. Hughes has won everybody over bar you it seems unfortunately.

Yeah, It'll still be a long while before im back at games, but i'll be having my youngest on my knee every saturday next season prepping him for when his mum takes the bubblewrap off him lol. They have a new customer services guy? and he speaks modern english rather than the ugg ugg knuckle draggers they usually have fill that role, i still remember when Tel had to get me through to Scholes about the Wolves riot that injured my little brother, even he was close to useless. But yeah, if humble pie is to be srved, ill take a second helping

Maybe he had a date with LMH a few years back and was stood up, left standing around outside the Odeon maybe? Ted, what a great write up and mirrors my thoughts and feelings precisely, guy in the office (bitter Boro supporter) told me from day one Hughes was taking us down. Imagine the pleasure I had reminding him of what he had said this morning..... He had no answer, very unusual believe me. Life is good, very very good for us Stokies! UTP!!!

Me too Ted, I was fed up of being told we couldn't even attempt to play football without getting relegated. So saw no point in following for another season of just stopping others from playing. Some of the football we have seen this season has shown we don't have to fear any team. Roll on next season.

Excellent as ever ted, all I hope for is that fans now have faith in the decisions that the manager and chairman make, I am sure that some won't work, but most have , and we need to be patient as fans. Give any incoming players in the summer a chance to do their thing on the pitch before we judge.

With Ted back, the club having made up with Old Stokie and most of the bitterness and recrimination that dominated this board in 2013 looking to have finally faded away I am looking forward to spending more time on here over the summer without having to fish out the prozac.

I've had to dislike the original post just to add a bit of balance.
