But the majority of English football is pretty standardly crude - whether the out ball is directed at Crouch, Drogba, Odejayi or Sidibe. And, when we're firing, are we that much cruder than 2/3 of the Championship? A lot of the so-called 'passing teams' have a big out ball merchant to pepper with 50-yard hoofs. Maybe it's the sight of Delap's howitzers being launched into the box from anywhere inside the opposition half that is the straw that breaks the camel's back with these lazy journos and induces all this bile? It's now become accepted received wisdom in the Chinese whispers of English football that we are ugliest, baddest, nastiest, hoofiest team in existence. When sent to cover a Stoke game, it's so much easier for these people to pre-prepare 300 words on Quasimodo football than watch a game and report on what unfolds in front of your eyes.

I think we are pretty one dimensional. So are most of the other teams we have played though. Some have passed the ball around in midfield for a bit but then they end up launching it long anyway (even Brazil). Lower league Prem teams are pretty crap too. The one thing I wish we did have was a bit more pace and trickery as an option in the midfield or out wide. That can add another dimension which makes it difficult to play against. Having said that Cressie and Lawrence will do for me right now  |

I remember watching MOTD two weeks ago, they were showing a NUFC game, there was a long ball from the back, up to Owen, I think it was Gavin Peacock who said, "It's not a long ball, it's a 'measured' pass" I was s0 stunned by this remark I laughed out loud!
Its a shame that we CAN be so one dimensionable at times, when we play it on the floor it looks good, I've noticed we tend to do this once we have control of the game.

what is the most annoying is that guy was there to do a match report and didnt even mention teh fucking game until the last couple of paragraphs.
who cares if people don't like our football, just gives us another reason to rub it in when they lose and when we go up!!
also, what West Brom said in their match report is shocking, mathcday magazines should never be insulting of the opposition

What worried me most about Saturday was that we were about fifteen times better than them yet we seemed to be sitting back. Tony, we got to where we have playing the way we do. For fucks sake don't start sitting on our heels now, otherwise saturday is going going to be a fucking long day.

Well there's many instances where we haven't been a hoofball team, anyone recall the wolves game when Fuller left a few defenders on the floor and slotted it in after running over half the pitch.
The newspaper story was probably that fuller kicked it up the pitch, violently assaulted all the defenders and probably stabbed the goalkeeper and then through sheer luck he scored.

You are the one suggesting honesty and if you truly believe we are the worst team on the planet to watch then it is you who is deluded or lying. It is well documented that I didn't want TP to return despite being a big supporter of his the first time round, he has though done an excellent job and we now have a team to be proud of. Granted we can be "functional" and when we have an off day we can be bloody awful but what team isn't? When we are on our day we are fast paced, fully committed and let our better players play and can be very entertaining (without ever over doing it). We have players who are good on the ball and in Ric and Liam have real box office players who get people out of their seats. I think it is more balanced to say we could play a bit more football but I for one don't want to see 20 ineffectual passes before decided "oh fuck it". We do alright though and next season we will undoubtedly sign some better players who will naturally play some better stuff. We are doing what we have to this year, lets give the club time to set up the infrastructure to build and sign players of a higher calibre once we have the sufficient funds. |
