I think a new nail has been hammered into his International coffin with the arrival of John Stones on the Premier League scene. Which has immediately knocked Shawcross down even further than he was before. It only bothers me because Ryan deserves International football, i honestly think he really does and he's been at this club since he was 19 years old and been one of the most integral parts of our journey from unrated and almost forgotten Championship club to established mid-table club in the most watched top flight league in world football. I won't say any more, every one of our supporters knows how good he is (apart from the very odd 1 or 2) That's why his constant omission from the England squad bothers me, i feel for him. The obvious flipside is that to me personally, Stoke City is all that's important to in football so as long as he's playing well for us then i'm happy but when thinking of how he must feel, he must be gutted to not have his deserved place within his national squad. On the downside, if he thinks being at Stoke is holding his England career back then he may start to think of a move ..... Of course mate but that's been at the back of our minds for a few seasons now yet nothing has happened, he signed a new contract last year which has him contracted to the club until 2018. I know that means nothing, but it actually means a little something. I can't see him leaving any time soon, he's very settled at the club, he's the club captain, he plays every single game, the fans love him, it's a new challenge with a new manager to which he's taken to very well by the looks of things and we're on our way to achieving a top 10 finish. I don't really worry about him having his head turned to go elsewhere in order to get called up for England simply because it hasn't happened before so i can't see why it would now. Everything's a possibility but until billy big boys clubs come knocking i think he'll stay with us. Hopefully until 2018 for sure.

The biggest problem for ryan now if stokes change in style we arent the media bogey boys anymore and we now play a more open game and although probably only conceded as many as last year (statto job) our perception will be weaker at the back now. This takes us away from the press attention and our match write ups are mainly stock reports of a change in style and talking about our new attack and is bego as good as we think.

If Curtis Davies is in there then why not Shawcross? Who's Curtis Davies? He's the captain and CB of Hull, 29.

I like Cahill and Jagielka as players and their England experience means for me they should be our first choice pairing at the world cup. But how anyone can argue Shawcross isn't considered a peer with Dawson, Davies, Smalling, Jones and Stones is beyond me.

Congratulations - the most stupid post of the week![/] Players ( not just our own) are consistently written off on the basis of brief performances on this board. I don't think that is a major revelation! Players who don't play always seem a better option than the ones who have not necessarily produced the goods immediately when given their chance. I don't recall anyone being written off on the basis of 16 minutes play. We normally give them a few appearances before forming a judgement. Anyway - it is you who said on Shawcross as an England international that "He had his chance and he blew it" after coming on as a sub in the 74th minute. So that would seem to be your opinion. And it is really one of the more stupid ones I've seen on this board. Which is an achievemnt - hence my congratulations.

Cahill was afforded the luxury of blowing his two or three times and actually allowed to start a game. He plays for Chelsea (and they new he was going to when at Bolton) And why does he play for one of the top clubs who compete at the highest level including Champions League and Ryan doesn't? It is possibly the same reason that Cahill plays for England and Ryan doesn't. I see we have the same old horseshit claiming it is all about Hodgson. It isn't. Add to the list Ferguson and every other manager of our top clubs. Ryan is perfect for Stoke City in the way Denis Smith was years ago. Unless he can add to his all round game then he will remain as uncapped as Denis and will remain at Stoke.

To be fair when I created this thread I wasn't campaigning Shawcross for England. I just noticed a glaring omission when you factor in that Curtis Davies and Dawson are on the list.

He had his chance and he blew it. That is the mentality with football. Very much the same mentality on this message board with our own players. utter fucking bollox he was chucked in late on the game against a striker who was on fire! hodgson is a cunt fact

Got his move to Chelsea and now regarded as arguably our best centre back. As far as i can see Cahill is more comfortable on the ball while Shawcross is the more natural and capable defender. I'm pretty confident that will be proven in the next few years. Hopefully Ryan won't have to move to "prove" he's international class.

Surely there is no debating the fact that Shawcross could seamlessly fit in alongside John Terry at the heart of the Chelsea defence?

I would not be upset if Curtis Davies or Caulker got in the squad ahead of Ryan, both have had good seasons. Personally I would pick Ryan all day long ahead of those two but all 3 are decent. Stones is a good prospect as is Flanagan but neither have enough experience at this time & they are not that amazing to overide that. Happy to see both of those in post World Cup squads
Smalling however hasn't performed to even average Premier Legaue standard this season & simply shouln't be anywhere near the squad.
I think Ryan is the most underated defender in the league,he has been outstanding & consistent for 6 season now & on top of that he has adjusted superbly this season to a shorter passing game (when many Stoke fans doubted he could adjust)& this seaosn without his partner in crime Huth. Where he needs to improve for me is goal scoring he should be scoring an average of 5 goals a season.

Ryan is more than capable on the ball plus he can defend which is what I thought being a CB was all about. I dunna get all this shite about him not being able to "play" anyone remember his 50yd pass to Arnie at Villa which lead to Fonzy scoring. He's better than most think , he's quick , strong and can play without doubt and his continued absence from the England set up only does two things it makes us weaker and shows the manager does not have a fucking clue.

Thats the point though isnt it shawcross defends first. No different from the chest out clatterings adams charton terry et al have delivered for england over the years and is vital in all teams one centre half to defend first and foremost and the other to be able to ponce about a bit ,most great teams include this combination as long as he can play simple passes at the right moment and make solid defensive descisions thats the must.I dont really see any in that selection on sky other than cahill and jaglelka who i would say have been as consitant in the prem since shawcross arrived at stoke and also not many of the foreign centre halves either.

I'd go over it all again but I just end up getting angry and calling Hodgson a cunt so I'm refraining.
All I will say is that it's a joke that he's not already a regular and the fact that he is missing off that Sky Sports list is a fucking outrage. John fucking Stones? Fuck off.

Shawcross should just go and play for Wales. Him, Ramsey and Bale would be the makings of a good team. This has crossed my mind a few times - at least he would get some international football - our Irish players get to experience this. If it wasn't for Ramsay then I guess he may have gone down this route Maybe Hughes can point him in the right direction

They don't have to like each other to play well together. The Welsh already have a good young team which Ryan would significantly add to. Even though I am not massively fond of the Welsh, however if I had Welsh family and was in the situation that Ryan was in, I would jump at the chance.

He will need to start considering this seriously at some point in the next few seasons. Is he going to get a move to a top four side, which guarantees you an England place?

Who knows why Ryan hasn't moved to one of the top clubs. Given what Alex Ferguson said of him I'm surprised Man U didn't come back for him - or maybe Ryan is one of those strange creatures - who is actually happy at a smaller club, being a big fish in a small pond?
Cahill has had a decent season but he's been a liability defensively for both Chelsea and England prior to that - but still got picked.
You're not trying to imply that Smalling is a better defender than Ryan then? And Jones? And Caulker?
What exactly does Ryan need to add to his all round game? 90 year passes?

If Woy manages to get us kicked out of the competition early,he will/should be sacked...and Ryan could be chosen by the new manager anyway.
TBF,I still haven't got a scooby how Hodgson got the job in the first place.

It's such an unfathomable thing.
About 3 years ago Curtis Davies was rotting in Villa's reserves, was loaned out to the Championship, moved to another Championship club. 30 good games with a newly promoted team and he's ahead of Ryan in the eyes of our nations football reporters.
Add to that the fact that Roy Hodgson hasn't watched a single Stoke match all season, to see how the captain is going on (and probably player of the season, ahead of Begovic). Bizarre.
