I thought everyone was white northern european, just like Jesus was. exactly! in fact i believe it says in the Bible that the only reason Jesus didn't come to England was because he couldn't get a work permit....if God had waited a couple of thousand years to get Mary up the duff then he could have taken advantage of the open border policy we have now. bad planning by God on that really!

Haha this thread was a fun read not sure how I missed it. The only thing that could've served as a cherry on top was Cartman getting annoyed and then writing, "WELL, IF WE EVOLVED FROM APES THEN WHY ARE THERE STILL APES!?"
Evolution is a beautiful theory. It explains the diversity of life on earth perfectly. The genius of the men who first realised this process is that the theory is just so simple to understand. If you can't understand it then either you are making some sort of effort not to, or you are thick as pig shit.

If you mean the way in which different peoples' bodies have evolved in different climates, then I agree - although that still doesn't mean all humans on earth came from the same source. But my question was to those who believe in Adam and Eve, but don't believe in evolution.

Another stupid quote from yourself. Hell as described in the Bible is symbolic. The most basic meaning of hell is complete separation from God, which of course is the great gift. If you don't believe in hell you are saying that the most wicked vile human beings have no different fate to the kindest, which in my opinion, is absurd. We can see very clearly that human behaviour is getting worst. The bible says this is because when man rejects God, you will see man descending into deeper depravity, because when there's no God there are no objective moral values; essentially man can make up his own rules. Hell is absolutely necessary.

The bible says this is because when man rejects God, you will see man descending into deeper depravity, because when there's no God there are no objective moral values; essentially man can make up his own rules. Hell is absolutely necessary. you are completely correct in one assumption here Cartman...the most wicked and vile human beings do have no different fate to the kindest. like EVERYTHING in the universe that is living, once it is dead it no longer exists in any form apart from the physical which gradually rots away. the problem you have is that you have started your argument on the pre-supposition that god exists and based all your arguments around that starting premise. any decent argument would start from the point of not knowing one way or the other and coming up with points to prove he DOES exist, not just presume he does and fit points in around that. not believing in hell is NOT absurd whatsoever if you don't believe in God. as of yet i have seen absolutely no evidence whatsoever, ever, at all, not one bit to show even a likelihood of God existing let alone proof of it. you saying "But the Bible says so" (a book made up of many many different books which WEREN'T all written by who they are accredited to, written in different centuries and then ultimately compiled hundreds of years after the supposed events after a group of individuals decided which books should go into it and which shouldn't dependent upon what message the hierarchy of the day wanted to send out to the public....also a book that contains the New Testament which in itself is a story that was told by dozens of other religions for centuries before Christianity was even thought of....virgin birth of a son, son being the gift of god, 3 wise men visiting the infant, group of 12 followers, put to death, rose again after 3 days etc. all have been told in pretty much that exact form hundreds and hundreds of years before Christianity mate) strangely enough isn't quite there in terms of convincing atheists otherwise. strange given the amount of bullshit conspiracy theories that you come up with and can apparently see through yet you seem to have fallen for the biggest cult wind up in human history hook, line and sinker!

I feel suppose I can feel empathy with your belief in god Cartman because it's a terrible thought to imagine that Adolf Hitler and an innocent child who dies of cancer ultimately share the same fate. Unfortunately, I believe it's highly likely that that is the truth. That thought hurts atheists more than theists because theists don't believe it to be true, but unfortunately just because a thought is distressing that doesn't seem reason enough to me to adopt faith. I don't believe the universe owes us any sense of justice or comfort. Just cold, hard truths.

If you were raised in Delhi, you'd be a Hindu. If you were raised in Karachi, you'd be a Muslim. If you were raised in Tokyo, you'd be a Shinto Buddhist. If you were raised in the 4th century BC Greece you'd believe in the Athenian pantheon.
The never ending turnover of countless religions only serves to indicate that religions change with the times, to suit the needs of the rulers and the ruling classes. The invention of the Church of England is a prime example of this.

Straight away, this is being narrowed down to the Hell and God as defined in this one organised, global religion, immediately discounting the near 3,000 other organised Gods that you don't believe in and the respective teachings and faiths. Whether it is theism, deism, monotheism or pantheism, God itself is described as different things, and there's not any general consensus on what is exactly being referred to. If somebody doesn't believe in God (however it is defined), then they naturally don't believe in hell (symbolic or otherwise) and don't believe in fate in the sense that it is predetermined by God. To claim though that this results in people not thinking that the most vile human beings don't have any different future than the kindest - what? Well, it depends. After this life – probably not but.. right here in this life that we experience – of course they do!. The people who make them choices have to deal with the consequences of it for the rest of their lives. Surely you aren’t saying that the punishment and rewards people get in this life don’t mean any difference? Surely you don’t go through this life just because of the rewards you get in the next life? In terms of ‘fate’ - Wherever we are, right now, at this point in our lives is the result of every decision that we have made in our lives up to now. If it is a predetermined path, then its not ourselves making those decisions, and nothing that we think we decide upon 'changes' anything in our lives as we only had this one route without any actual free will. In fact, there are no decisions to make because it has been predetermined, and everything we think we chose just leads us to the same place regardless. No, I don't believe in this predetermined path, I believe in the power of our own actions. I could, right this very moment, make a decision to take a different path in life. Every single thing that we do is our decision to go ahead with that in rejection of all other possibilities at that moment. If where we are now is based upon all of our previous decisions up to that moment, then so is our future too. That is our own conscious decision and our own free will. I have no idea how you can even begin to substantiate the claim that human behaviour is getting worse. On what measurable or quantifiable basis?? ‘The Bible says…’ can be filed with ‘The Quran says…’ and ‘The Torah says…’ The Bible and other religious scripture tell us lots of things, which each person will interpret differently. If people have this belief in God and this desire (or these ‘objective moral values’) then SURELY these come from your absolute core. You surely don’t need any kind of text to tell you what it is to be good (in fact – is it not ultimately what defines you, what you are judged on and therefore your very own principals? You also have to wonder just how naturally good a person is if they need to be told to do so, they need to be given this carrot of ‘eternal heaven’ or threatened with ‘eternal hell’. The Bible is your text that you use to form your core of beliefs. You have the right to do so, just as others have the right not to. But that does not under any circumstance mean that they don’t have a set of moral values of what is right or wrong. It certainly didn't seem to be an issue in the 12,000 or so pre-Christian years in this country (until the Roman Empire decided to 'implement' it as the religion of choice) - the people in the UK during that time didn't suddenly become 'good' or suddenly develop moral values. They went through major advances such as the stone age, bronze age and iron age, established villages, towns, trading routes, modes of transport, laws, rules, education systems. They punished people who did wrong, in the way that they decided what wrong was defined as a conscious society (and principally hasn't changed at all). Various societies throughout the world have separately and independently defined what is right or wrong, what was punishable or not long before major organised religions swept through the world and put it in a book for everybody to read and you know what – lo and behold they’re all pretty similar! Doesn’t seem to matter which God people believe in at all. Hell is only absolutely necessary for those who don’t know themselves what good or bad is, and for those who need an incentive in the first place to live either a good or bad life. Each and every single one of us is capable of making decisions every single day that help ourselves and other people, that make a positive impact and contribution on other people’s lives. Each time that we do that, every single time any of us make that choice in rejection of all other negative possibilities, we make the world better. Each time we do it is a minor miracle, and that’s what greatness is about – doing a countless number of small but good acts. Those that find their happiness and greatness are the ones who define who they are, what they want and how they are going to do it. It is the people who reject countless negative choices, possibilities and influences. It is the people who create strong relationships with those that similarly have the biggest, positive influences on them. It is the people who believe in themselves and their own ability to make things happen rather than waiting for somebody or something else to do it for them. This is absolutely regardless of faith in one organised religion. People go around looking for this divine inspiration and intervention, waiting for something to happen to them and are looking everywhere for it apart from in the mirror. You don’t even need millions/billions of followers to tell you that what you believe in is right or wrong – you only need to believe it yourself. There is not one ‘God’, there are around 7 Billion of them., and each one of them is correct and true for each particular person.

I don't believe the universe owes us any sense of justice or comfort. Just cold, hard truths. Very good post. Pointlessness of existence is very hard to deal with at first, hence the very human desire to seek meaning in pretty much anything, and where there isn't any obvious meaning to invent one (religion, faith, God, life after death, amazing coincidence, synchronicity, conspiracy theory etc etc). It's comforting. Opium for the masses as it were. But eventually accepting pointlessness becomes completely liberating. (Obviously I mean pointless in terms of some higher purpose to life, not just lying around all day ). Although your excellent example of Hitler and child cancer doesn't get any easier to bear even if it is easier to understand. You exist because your forebears bred. That is your purpose because that's what your DNA tells you to do. That's it. Soon you will die, and both your physical and conscious will also cease to exist, other than perhaps a few trillion discrete atoms that used to be 'you' but are now part of something else. The only part of 'you' that continues to exist is the information in your DNA which you have managed to pass on if you've bred successfully. The genes that are expressed in your offspring. This doesn't mean you therefore have to live in an anarchic, moral-free way as Cartman is likely to suggest. Why should it? Man is a social animal. Social because the process of evolution has produced a genome which says so. Any set of laws or moral codes (whether they're written down in a 21st century legislature or just automatically observed by hunter-gatherers 100,000 years ago) which aid that 'social-ness' will survive in our genome provided it supplies 'fitness' for humans in the environment we live in. Religion is just one of these many inventions which supply fitness towards 'social-ness'. I'm sure it arose originally as animal or sun worship and has just become more refined and contrived as we have increased in intelligence and inventiveness through the centuries. Once you realise that, you can see it for what it is and recognise other examples: worshipping at the Britannia every fortnight, with 25,000 other like-minded acolytes, seeing people you know and empathise with, singing hymns, praying for a successful outcome (often with more demonstrable success than all the other religions put together!), coming away feeling good about your visit hopefully, not much difference really is there!
