For the benefit of atheists in the north of Scotland without a decent phone signal, what's the gist of the question? I watched about the first 3/4 minutes in a nutshell because we don't see evolution happen over a short period its not fact.

I don't believe in evolution. There's no way random mutation of the DNA genome leads to new information being created. Just look around you, disease and death - both of which are the result of mutations.
I also want to say that PHD guy in the video says there's no need to involve a creator with evolution. What rubbish. Evolution doesn't explain how life started. Life only ever comes from life. So even if you believe in evolution, you can still believe in a cosmic creator.

Religion is up there as one of mankinds worst ever inventions, along with the nuclear missile and Piers Morgan.
Alls religion ever causes is problems, its supposed to be about peace and tolerance, yet we have videos like this which just rile everyone up into a heated debate, we've seen war, acts of terrorism, violence and murder all done in the name of "religion", are we really that backward as a race that we'll maim and kill our own kind just because they have different beliefs than ourselves? It's fucking laughable, I've got no problem with people's beliefs, if you want to declare your allegiance to god or pray to Allah then fine, you do that, but do so in your place of worship or at home, because not everyone wants to be involved,

And how do you know that my mobile phone signal is poor ? Who else is there ? Regards to my fellow Stokies from Dunnet Head

A question for religious people who ask atheists to 'prove' their belief and the atheists who ask religious people to 'prove' theirs:
Do you not have anything better to do in your time than to argue with people you'll never agree with? It smacks of insecurity about your own beliefs. You've decided who you are, what you believe and how you're going to live - can't you just be satisfied with that?
I'm my own God, I genuinely believe that and the beauty of it is that I don't have to prove otherwise to anybody!

What i dont get is that Charles Darwin proved that evolution was a distinct scientific possibility.
Know one has ever proved that anything remotely religious even exists yet people still believe. What naive bellends

I could pick out millions of people every day and say that they are damaging to humanity. Also, my definition of what is damaging to humanity will differ to others - so who am I to 'judge' that and apply that standard to everybody else? I don't want to spend my time focused on other people though, I want to live my own life. Whatever is going to happen, its up to me. Nobody else is going to go on holidays for me, get married for me, raise a family for me. I know what I want, have my aspirations in life and want to make sure that I spend as much of my time as possible focusing on that - not what other people who don't matter to me think or do. I'm incredibly comfortable with that and most of all I'm genuinely happy. That comes from spending my time wisely, with the people I want to spend time with rather than going around picking arguments or wanting to change other peoples beliefs.

Brilliant! Sure, religion has been used as a blanket to a great number of conflicts, but if you think it's the root cause you are massively mistaken. Take away religion and people will just find something else to "excuse" their behaviour. Two of the biggest wars, WWI and WWII respectively, were fought for power, not religion.

Personally I think time spent opposing ignorance is never time wasted.

Why is it massively mistaken to say religion is causal to wars? Why is it a "blanket" and not a "root cause" when it is an explicitly stated motivation for many acts of violence?

What naive bellends Understand the definition of faith: to have confidence in something to be true. Evolution in itself is a faith based system. Have you never seen the tree of life? It's one completed life form to another. There's never anything in between. You have to have faith to believe there was a transitional stage of one kind to another. As for proving my faith, well that comes from the bible. Prophecies are what make me believe the bible is true. Just take a look at the rebirth of Israel in 1948, just like the bible said would happen. And the Jews going for nearly 2000 years without an homeland yet still maintaining their national identity, something which is unheard of in mans history. watchmanbiblestudy.com/Articles/1948PropheciesFulfilled.htm

So you don't want to spend your time questioning people's beliefs - bully for you - although you're clearly happy to spend your time questioning people who question people's beliefs. Personally I think time spent opposing ignorance is never time wasted. Not at all. Let's get something straight here - one comment on a messageboard whilst I was on the phone to the estate agent getting a deal done on a new flat doesn't constitute me being 'happy to spend my time questioning people...' - it was a comment based on that video of a guy who has gone out of his way to video these 'interviews'. People are ignorant because they are unable to consider the views of others; and on that basis it gives me absolutely no desire to pick out these people and try to get them to think different. These are quite simply insignificant people in my life, who have no positive impact at all. There are millions of people I could go pick an argument with in London right now. I could be campaigning about something, protesting about something else, but have spent my day instead getting a new flat sorted, I've called spoke to my missus for an hour (who isn't in London with me at the moment), spoke to my parents (and told my mum and dad that I love them), had some cake and a coffee with a close friend of mine and learned to play a new song on the guitar in preparation for some charity do we have at work. There are far more reasons why I'm happy than posting a quick couple of comments on a messageboard, and its because I've used most of my time today for good reasons, focusing on those that are closest to me.

You missed the words "in the absence of any evidence" from your definition of faith. Evolution is not something to be believed or not believed, it is just a fact. Saying "I don't believe in evolution" is like saying "I don't believe in gravity." It is a nonsensical (and irrelevant) thing to declare.

how do you know that too? - easy to say its an odious movie because it makes those trusted academics views look pathetic - you can tell that those students believed in evolution without really knowing why - if you watch it properly, he makes far more sense than the scientists and students, even changing their views

How can some forms of the same bacteria i.e Staphylococcus aureus be completely resistant to penicillin yet others vulnerable to it without mutation of the genome caused by selective pressures? That's evolution on a very small but real and significant scale. A mutation is simply an alteration in the order of bases in DNA which code for an amino acid which bond to form proteins, therefore mutations do not only cause cancer and other conditions as so many believe but may change the nature of the protein responsible for fur colour, which subsequently allows an animal to hide from predators more successfully, which then allows it to reproduce and pass on the mutated protein to its offspring, whilst those without die and are gradually replaced by the mutated offspring. The evidence is before your very eyes.

Why is it massively mistaken to say religion is causal to wars? Why is it a "blanket" and not a "root cause" when it is an explicitly stated motivation for many acts of violence? Have search for the "Religion" thread from last year and read some of Mick Mill's posts on the subject, he makes many good points on how religion, in Cartman's words, is "used as a blanket". The counter argument here is that preachers have long argued that religion has civilised society and we would have anarchy without it. Although Richard Dawkins will disagree with me, I think that religion is largely about power. Where were the Christian ethics and values in Europe during WW2? The Catholic Church did the square root of sod all to help the Jews. There's a big difference between religion and faith, but religion does a great job of gathering people that have been brainwashed to believe or those who have chosen to do so. As long as science cannot prove how life begun, people of faith will have something to cling to. I wish I could agree that people should just let people get on with their beliefs as it does no harm, but as long as religions have special dispensation to hold contrary views on things like the equality of women and homosexuality etc., then I "believe" it's right to question their bigoted views.

I honestly got bored with the guy with the microphone, from his first 'truth' about lack of observable evidence of evolution. There is observable evidence, plenty of it, one of the most obvious being the mutation of animals to resist disease and even mutation of disease to become immune to certain drugs.
The real issue with the video (and religion in general) is the assumption that because we can't prove something, then that automatically means it must be down to the bloke in the sky (or animal, multiple gods, or whatever particular faith you happen to believe in).
