I'd personally start Rooney on the bench.
And I'd play Milner in the centre and 2 pacey winger

Just looking at Italy's schedule in Group D. After the England game in the jungle, they've got two early kick-offs against Central and South American teams in the northeast tropical sweatboxes. Ouch. They're surely going to be drained by that - and all after basing themselves at the other end of the country necessitating long flights. Barmy. England seem to be relatively well off with 2 games in the south-east in low-70s weather and near their base camp. Could be an important factor in their favour? I think Italy will go all out to beat what they see as a poor England team in that first game. We must be ready to hit them hard on counter attacks through the middle of midfield and not out wiDE where they are better equipped to cope. Barkley from the start and Rooney on the bench would be my gamble for that game
I couldn't agree more with every post you've made on this thread today Pete.
Absolutely perfect analysis of the current situation.

The more fancied countries continue to labour in the warm-up friendlies.
On the back of Italy and Uruguay's very unconvincing displays, Germany were garbage against Cameroon in a 2-2 draw, and France are looking poor against Paraguay. 0-0 with 15 minutes left.

I still expect the Italy game to be a dead easy 0-0 draw. We easily kept them at arms' length for 120 minutes in the Euros and if we set up the same, this occasion will be no different.

Since my earlier post/rant about Woy and Burton, I've seen the light again. (The light I actually saw was Balotelli's interview where he says England are no rivals for Italy - is he pissed?)
I hope we stuff them now.

Costa Rica beating Japan 1-0 at half time in Florida. Honda is horribly out of form at the moment and Kagawa obviously not sharp. We should easily have enough to beat them if we meet in the second round.
EDIT: finished 3-1 Japan. Looked better going forward after a few subs but still dodgy at the back.

Difficult to say on Rooney. Roy will see him in training and the next couple of games and will have to assess his fitness, sharpness and confidence. He is a player who needs to be 100% to perform If he's ready, I would play him. He is still our most naturally talented player, capable of turning a game with a moment of brilliance.
I'm more worried about Sturridge against top quality international opposition. He can go into his shell a bit, but has hopefully benefitted from a brilliant season with Liverpool. I'm with Paul's original idea: use Barkley from the bench, bring off Sturridge and push Rooney up front.
The formation in attack is more like options than problems. It's the back 5 that worry me. Hart always looks as if he's got a mistake coming, Baines is great going forward but is sometimes guilty of ball watching and being caught out of position, and those 2 are head and shoulders above the other 3. We haven't got an international RB, Jagielka's not fit and Kenny Miller turned away from Cahill in one step to stick the ball into the net. Ballotelli and Suarez must fancy their chances...
However cautious England are, I expect them to concede. Might be a good world cup, because there aren't many teams who look solid at the back.

Oh absolutely Okey, the comments were based on Roy's refusal to go with a 4-3-3 with Rooney leading the line and sticking with him playing in the hole in a 4-2-3-1.

Lampard announced as captain for the game tomorrow night. That's an odd one. Isn't he the vice-captain though? And they seem to be playing a bit of an experimental, second stringy team with the likes of Foster, Jones, Ox and Milner starting. Strangely ,though, Rooney is said to be starting too. Maybe Woy thinks he needs the game time?

GuardianWayne Rooney will be asked to start England’s friendly against Ecuador in the left-wing position he is on record as disliking, after Roy Hodgson admitted he was concerned enough about the striker’s sharpness to change his mind about fielding an entirely new side in their penultimate warm-up match before the World Cup.
Mirror It may have been meant as a warning shot across Wayne Rooney’s bows, a spur to get him going.
But it did not sound like that.It sounded like something a great deal more serious. It sounded like Roy Hodgson is genuinely thinking about leaving Rooney out of the England side to start the World Cup. Making the biggest call of his managerial life

Why are we experimenting two games before the World Cup!? Play your strongest XI Woy! He needs to give everyone in the squad game time, it's no good playing the same 11 getting them ready and then come match day an injury or two occur and the back ups aren't in any shape to play.

Capello did the same thing though and then come the tournament the players didn't know what the hell they were doing. Need to get them used to the system and get them out on the pitch, if not in this next game then in the final warm up match.
Can't go on to the pitch thinking about injuries, the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. Need to be ready having played one game together and knowing exactly how to play against them.

Holy shit.
That choice of back four is probably more brave than any decision regarding Rooney will ever be!

Why are we experimenting two games before the World Cup!? Play your strongest XI Woy! it's not experimenting at all. Hodgson will already know his first 11 and will have already tried it out. tonight's match is nothing to do with trying out different formation etc. it's the equivalent of a pre-season friendly to warm thr players up and keep them sharp. the levering in of Rooney on the left is nothing more than giving him some gametime to get fully matchfit whilst also being able to give Barkley a bit of time on the pitch. i'd put money on it that usually he'd just play Barkley and leave Rooney on the bench but as he needs a bit more stamina training it's better to shove him out on the left and give him that extra 45 mins or so than just leave him on the bench for 90 minutes. Milner will be tried out at RB in case Jones isn't fully fit to fill in for Johnson that's all nothing more. the games against Ecuador and honduras are....well, games against Ecuador and Honduras FFS!!! nothing more than keeping the players fresh before the tournament, the games where the manager would experiment would be against tougher opposition than this (no point experimenting a formation when you could beat the opponents with Rooney in goal). just keep the squad players fit and fresh and get them used to the heat that's all tonight and saturday are about. games where you test things out are against teams that can actually test you and those "Experiments" so you can see if they work, these games aren't about anything other than training exercises for the 23 and will have no bearing whatsoever on what happens in 10 days. huge mountain made out of a...well, not even a molehill at all

Better to have his first XI clear in his mind first though.
The fact that he's starting Rooney on the left wing and Milner at right back tonight, suggests that maybe he doesn't.
It'll be interesting to see which team starts on Saturday.
EDIT: Millsy, if Rooney fails to impress tonight and Milner plays well at right back - I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Rooney out of the team on Saturday and Milner in it (at right back) - Johnson was shocking against Peru.

The only thing lacking with Rooney is match time. He is renowned for taking a while to get going after a lay-off. Fergie stated that he was the sort of player who had to be playing regularly to get the best out of him.
Tonight's game is all about getting on pitch leg time into the players who need it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Rooney will start every game in the middle and where he can be most influential as should our best player. Imagining he is not or anything else will happen is frankly people kidding themselves in my opinion.

Friendlies mean next to nothing (club & country).
Fitness excrcise primarily & also to get used to the conditions.
no injuries please
good performance/bad performance/players out of position/strongest team e.t.c. not remotely concerned by any of it.

Sureky though Milner at full back simply emphasises the muddled thinking behind the squad in the first place?
