Well he's already crossed a line imo. The diplomacy appears not to be working, it's time to put a bit of real clout behind it imo. I wonder if those two US destroyers that were there for the Olympics are still there? It's a good start if they are. There's no chance, Bayern A few cancelled invites, a few meaningless sanctions ... for a few months, just to be polite. Billy Hague has just flown out, no doubt to say the whole world is right behind them, politically and morally, and strongly suggest the temporary Ukraine government hot foot it to Moscow and beg enter constructive talks with the Russians, as soon as possible. Spot on , that's exactly what will happen ! ......it looks like we are pulling out all the stops to ease the situation through diplomacy...but the reality is it's all and dusted

The trouble with Putin is that no fucker in Russia likes him. Maybe hes shit scared of the same thing that happened to his poodle happening to him. He's demonstrated how stupid he makes himself look with that series of macho photo;s he had taken. He's a power freak who will manipulate anything to retain it. Its not about Russians, its about him. There may be something in what you say .....he does appear to enjoy the power

But the threat game is a dangerous game to play ....it could very easily backfire and then you have problems

America acting weak, actually scares me. It's because no one wants that war that nothing will happen. If Vlad thought otherwise, he wouldn't have moved. He is boss, in that area of the world. Kerry did an interview an hour or so ago, with CBS. In effect he's saying Russia is being terribly impolite and is winning no friends with it's 19th Century bully boy tactics. He is advising US business to think hard about trading with Russia (so hinting at future trade sanctions). And rattling the UN sabre. He has all but said; that's as big as the stick gets. It's going to be a "fun" half century, as blocs form around - and "against" - China and NATO. Vlad has few friends, never mind giving bits of what he does have, away; and he won't want his country swallowing by either.

They have as much power as Arsenal, a completely pointless organisation if ever there was one. There's a chance here to really stick it to Putin imo but it won't be done with words alone. They need to be backed up with a show (and that's all I want) of force.

Kerry and Hague playing good cop, bad cop. All just a public performance. Russia will end up offering some of political deal to (some of) Ukraine (one extremely biased in Russian favour). Like you say, the UN is just a play thing of NATO. Everyone, of any "size", ignores it or supports it as the situation demands.

This is - in my mind at 3:30am, before I crawl off to bed! - A bit like us v the posh lot in the premier league. In polite UN circles; one simply doesn't invaded the sovereignty of a small, neighbouring country and dictate terms. Just like you don't chuck the ball half the length of the pitch, only pick players over 6ft 2" and kick opposition players up in the air; in the premier league. But you can. And be successful, at it. So long as you do it the right way.

Anyone know what percentage of European gas comes from Russia via Ukraine? If it is a significant amount, then Putin will laugh at any trade sanctions, and turn off the tap. I'm sure China would be happy to buy up their excess gas.

I intend to fulfill an ambition of mine by driving my 20 year old Lada across the whole length of Russia taking in Siberia and other remote areas whilst wearing certain items of fashionable clothing from the 1970s and a red and white knitted bob hat... I always think one should show respect by wearing the appropriate attire rather than going for brash modern 'designer' gear.....

There's Jack we can do militarily so we have to isolate them. A good start would be to not send Paralympians to Sochi, get FIFA to take the 2018 World Cup off them. Put on bigger coats when they turn the gas taps off.

Just like the Russians are? They wouldn't do anything because they know they'd lose any subsequent war. Mutually assured destruction is a great tool of diplomacy, at the minute the west appear to be getting shafted . The Russians are not risking the threat ...they know we won't take any form of military action on behalf of the Ukraine ......The mutually assured destruction scenario is not applicable here ....neither side is going initialise a nuclear exchange over this , the only people who are being shafted are the Ukranians , but there is little to be done about it , a similar situation to the one that happened to Poland in 1939 and we all know what the end result of that was That's what I was thinking this was just what Hitler did to justify the invasion of Poland sent German troops to guarantee the rights of Sudetan Germans, the ethic Germans of Poland, now read Crimean Russians but this was just moving one chess piece in the game. We did nothing but talk then and bring a piece of paper from Berlin with Neville Chamberlain the Fuehrer's guarantee of "Peace in our time" Someone once said that "if you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeating the same mistakes"
