Peter Shilton cost us a world record fee for a keeper and according to Denis Smith he also cost us the League Title. He must be a contender, as well. What about Jani Viander - £100,000 and never played? Coming from Denis Smith I think that's a bit rich. Alan Dodd was in a different class and bailed him out of the shit each and every week.

They have to be in the mix too but for me the £8m tips it in Palacios' favour. Plus out of those 35 games I can't think of a single telling contribution from him. At least Arismendi had 1 good game in the Europa against Valencia ;D

What always strikes me as strange is that when you see pictures/reports of the squad 'socialising' he always seems to be cheerfully in the thick of it so I dont think its that he is particularly unhappy to be at this club. He's just lost it completely in footballing terms. I think Hughes is doing his best to squeeze some value out of him but it looks a lost cause to me. Oh and definitely the worst ever signing on just about every level.

Yeah worst signing. We had our pants pulled down by Spurs. It's harder to identify mental rather than physical collapse I guess.
Looked like progression at the time which made it more disappointing.
No idea why Hughes wouldn't sell him to Hull.

True enough RAF but there has always been this sort of 'lost soul' theory about him since the tragic family events of a few years ago.

I understand the bloke has had some personal tragedy, and I feel sorry for him , but that is not my fucking problem when it comes to Stoke City. The fact is we were sold a fucking wrong un by Harry and it's fairly clear Palacios is never going to be the player he was at Wigan, and I reckon it is down to him , he's just lazy and has lost the love for the game, happy to take his wages for fuck all. The club should have grown some stones and released him from his contract in January, so it would have freed up his sizeable wage so we could have bought someone better in, or at the very least two players to improve the squad depth.
Plus it would enable Wilson to make a decision, either drop a level or move abroad where the football isn't as strenuous, or retire back to Honduras as his head hasn't been in the game since what happened to his brother Edwin, but whilst he's here earning a huge wage it's making his mind up for him.
In terms of ability, not the worst player we've ever signed, but in terms of value, and the return we've got from our expenditure, it's certainly up there.

I still find it hard to believe we'd have turned down a concrete bid for him. Then again, he was mystifyingly down to start at Liverpool so God knows what we were thinking. I'd sell him for a packet of quavers.

For those who sky plused motd last night. Just look at the Shearer analysis and keep your eye on good ole Wilson and see what you think.

I think it's Shea, purely because we were aware of Palacios's previous quality; he was a gamble that didn't work out for whatever reason and has become a totally frustrating signing as we know there is a real player in there somewhere.
Shea just doesn't have the minerals and at this level it's inexcusable.

It is harsh in the extreme to attribute their goal to Palacios. Adam, Wilson and in particular Cameron (that has to be the first tackle that Nasri has won in his career) were all way more culpable that WP, horrendous signing though he's been.

His problems are all mental in my opinion and unlike fitness probably something that can never be worked on,unless he really wants it,and it's looking like he doesn't.

You also need to look at it in terms of resources available to the club. In pure £'s wasted Palacios is there with Arismendi. On the same boat but less £'s spent and hence wasted are tonge, soares and Davies.
Going back, we must have spanked smaller amounts on complete dross before - Bangoura springs to mind for attitude not ability

In terms of waste of money, Kyle Lightbourne would have to be up there as well. At the time we signed him, we pretty much didn't have a pot to piss in and blowing 500k on him, at the time, was like spending 3m on a player now.
He did go on to do OK as a partner for Thorne a few years later but even so, 500k for Killer Kyle was money well and truly pissed down the toilet.

I'm really not sure who is more useless , Wilson Palacios or Jon Walters ?? Let me think a min.............................. Yes, it's Walters But as far as transfers in recent years, there are a lot more useless than Palacios, a lot more ! Ness, Edu, Shea, Tonge, Soares, Arismendi, Owen, Gudjohnsen

Hes a strange one before all of his problems (brother's death, injuries etc) he was a player who obviously played with quite a lot of desire and a bit of fire. These days he looks like the fire's died out and he's not interested at all which is a wank attitude when you're paid the ridiculous amount he is.

We sold Griffin, and blew the entire funds available from that on Lightbourne, while replacing Griffin with Nyamah and then Bryan Small. That's the equivalent of selling Bego for £20 million this summer, signing no replacement keeper, spending £10 million on someone like Grant Holt, and then inevitably getting relegated.
