Peter Shilton cost us a world record fee for a keeper and according to Denis Smith he also cost us the League Title.
He must be a contender, as well.
What about Jani Viander - £100,000 and never played?

Surely Gudjonson in recent memory. Palacios was like the combo deal at MCdonalds, you only want the burger but the french fries look good on the menu and you get a drink as well... where would we be without McCrouchy now?

In terms of value for money it has to be Palacios I think. When we signed the pair of them I was more excited about Palacios than Crouchy, I thought it was a brilliant signing. :/

8 fucking million this reminding me makes it worse... He has no engine, didn't track his man and is useless at times and completely anonymous. Atleast Nzonzi tries to track his man and usually fouls. Whelan an Adam have been a good duo lately but times like these when they get tired, I wish we kept some seniors for defense like Upson and Deano until we had replacements for the bench. Muni should get a shout in front of the cb's before Palacios now, I feel hes got cdm attributes. Palacios is useless.

What about Jani Viander - £100,000 and never played? What Smithy said was that the money spent on Shilton should have been invested in a replacement for Ritchie. This cost us the title. Can't blame Shilton for that. Also the board had made funds available after the Shilton signing but, for some reason, no other signings were made. There was a thread on this, including sentinel article, couple of years ago

I think Eidur takes some beating, but to think we paid 8 million for Palacios. He looks so confused on a football pitch... which is rather odd seeing as he's a professional footballer.

we buy players injured or recovering from surgery in the hope that they will come good. Pre injury and his surgery Palacios was the best midfielder in the country. He had to deal with his brother awful death.we were stupid to buy him,but when he comes on as a sub my mind becomes peaceful because he can be solid. Hughes and co have done an excellent job in bringing out the best of him. Erm, what?

You are quite possibly right MoMo. Given the money spent on the transfer fee and wages, it has to be right up there. A shocking signing who we have got absolutely no benefit from.
Add him to the long list of wastes of money which mean the current manager has his hands tied when it comes to making moves of his own in the transfer market.

A shocking signing who we have got absolutely no benefit from. . Money has been wasted no one is denying that dave but the above is the key phrase. I know you hate him and the debate still rages but we have got things out of Crouch, we have had absolutely zilch out of Palacios. Nothing.

Cannot be far off. Absolutely cunting useless. Dave Kitson joint with him. Nowhere near Kitson was asked to a job in our first season up and spent most of it defending and playing behind Fuller He did the job that was required which was alien to his natural position Palacios is a different matter

I don't know if it's fair to blame Pulis for Palacios. You could argue we could've done our homework more on his condition (see Gudjohnsen, E and Guidetti, J) but on paper it was a good signing and he obviously passed a medical. It seems to me that his attitude is the problem.

This guy should not be playing for Stoke City. He's shitter than shit. I cant believe he still gets in the squad at all. He just leisurely jogs around with no urgency, stands with his head down looking at the ball, points around alot, and when players run past him he just lets them go...to me he just seems brainless. Over the last couple of years we have seen far too many players who you could apply the tag of "worst signing ever" but I think Palacious is the king of the hill.

Players like Keith Scott, Dave Rowson, Kofi Nyamah etc were worse players but when you take the £8m into account he has to be our worst ever. I can't think of a single game where he's made a telling positive contribution.
Dave Kitson was a poor signing but even he scored a few goals in his second season and I think some of them were winners.

Would Diego Arismendi (£2.6m going up to £4.8m) and Brek Shea (£2.6m) be somewhere in the mix too? At least we have teased 35 games out of the hapless Honduran Palacios whereas as there was and will be no meaningful action from Arismendi and Shea respectively
