Think the older you are the more difficult this is. My immediate choice was Queen"s Sheer Heart Attack. But then I thought what about stuff I have by Edwin Starr from my Northern Soul youth and other stuff like Led Zep,, ELO, Deep Purple, Santana, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Rick Wakeman. Sorry can't choose so I'm out on this one.

Without question the most important and brilliant album ever made. "Computerwelt" by Kraftwerk, or if "Weld" by Neil Young was to hand it might be that. Then again "Rising" by Rainbow....f***k knows! Very tough question. "Unknown Pleasures" by Joy Division...errr...."The Greatest Hits" by Leonard Cohen, "Music of the Spheres" Ian Brown..."Yo, Bum Rush the Show" Public Enemy..."Lullaby's to Paralyze" Queens of the Stone Age...any Fall album, anything by Michael Nyman... No. It would be Kraftwerk. Deffo. I've just recently downloaded some Kraftwerk. Model, computer love, Autobahn etc. I'd forgotten how good they were.

It's by no means as good as many that have already been suggested, but Salop's comment about the first time he listened to a particular album reminds me of the first time I listened to Help by The Beatles.
I did not hear it until the early '80's, but left a big impression on me, and I then started to look backwards at music rather than what was in fashion or current.

Some of the NS stuff now sounds right cringeworthy for sure but there were a couple of legends, Edwin Starr being one for me. But he was kind of a Motown/Northern Soul hybrid. Saw him live just before he died about 10 years ago and he could still captivate live audiences.

Not that he cares anymore.

Who's Next by The Who. Hugely influential and original sounds by a band at its peak creatively and as a live act.

It's difficult to pin it down to one album. I'd try my best to stuff a record box full and escape with a clutch. Music depends on the mood, if the boat was sinking I reckon I'd be pretty pissed off so the album I'd save would reflect that. Something a bit angry: Stations of the Crass - Crass Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables - Dead Kennedys London Calling - The Clash
If it was an insurance job or I was smoking a cheroot in sight of a desert island and the mood was cool I'd grab one of: Loaded - Velvet Underground Hunky Dory - David Bowie Clear Spot - Captain Beefheart Dusty in Memphis - Dusty Springfield Liege and Leif - Fairport Convention Pink Moon - Nick Drake The Story So Far - Mo'Wax Best of - Diana Ross and the Supremes Expensive Shit - Fela Kuti Off The Wall - Jacko Best of - Blood, Sweat & Tears Best of Massive Attack Pictures in the Reflection of a golden horn - Sonny Rollins Brown Album {Love Songs} - The Beatles Best of - Strolling Bones Tinariwen's first album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts - Eno and Byrne
... or something by The Floaters....

The Cure - Disintegration This is the problem with the question though, because Disintegration is a fucking mastepiece but I tend to listen to it when I'm feeling low. Would you really want this to be the only album you listen to for the rest of your life!?
