This is spot on. Look at the league table this morning. Its frightening!! The FACT is we shouldn't be in this position. Hughes needs to get a grip. Persisting with fucking 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 with the wrong personnel to make it work is shocking. Walking into work this morning and a work colleague turned to me and said 'I wouldn't want to be in a relegation scrap with Hughes' I think he means that Hughes turns teams out that appear to be a tad gutless. Hope he's wrong and this is a blip... very worried this morning. Why shouldn't we be in this position? We finished 16th last season and we are currently 16th having failed to address many of the problems that emerged during the last 2 years of the previous managers tenure. Its no surprise to me that we find ourselves where we are. It was always likely when we failed to get the forward players Hughes wanted in the Summer.

I think that what I'm seriously concerned about is the fact that we won't be able to GRIND out results if we're still in a similar position moving into April. The majority of Hughes signings don't seem to have the fight in them. Hughes didn't get his signings no. But why insist on the same formation EVERY fucking game when we don't have to players to play in the manner he wants. He's not adjusted to what playing staff he has available!?

The previous incumbent inherited an average championship team and had the best part of 100m to turn us into a stable premier league team. Hughes has inherited a stable premier league team and so far hasn't made much difference. Personally i think Hughes will turn it around, but i don't understand why people like yourself think he is immune to criticism simply because he is not Tony Pulis. People like me??? Mark Hughes isn't immune from crticism at all, certainly not from me. Where valid, I have criticised him and will continur to do so. You say Pulis inherited a midtabe championship side and you're right. He inherited a team full of players he himself had signed during his first spell and he was given time and money to build the team he wanted. Mark Hughes inherited a team heading in one direction and loaded with hopeless big name players on big fat contracts. He hasn't had time or considerable financial backing so should be judged accordingly. We need points and we need them badly. If Hughes persists with the likes of Cameron, Walters, Crouch, Adam and Wilson (not that he has much choice with Wilson at the moment) in his current system then he will have nobody to blame but himself. ok, i'm wrong to put you in the same bracket and some others on here, there just seems to be a bit too much of 'we were shit last season so don't complain about being shit now' going on. The whole point of sacking Pulis and bringing in a new manager is to improve, other clubs like Southampton last year and Crystal Palace have done just that but we have not.

we can lose tonight and still be points clear from the zone.
the worry will be that if we can't win at palace or sunderland then where will we win (or draw) at.
we have the players - they just need to be managed right.

Again you have to temper the judgement to the situation and unlike Southampton's manager, our new manager hasn't had the same financial backing to get the team functioning how he would want. Hughes isn't without fault but it seems to me that he has worked with his hands tied behind his back so far. EDIT- I disagree that we have the players. We have sufficient quality to scrape through a relegation scrap but little more than that.

I think most posters have cut Sparky a fair bit of slack. If the previous incumbent had remained in post and then delivered an underwhelming 5 wins in the first 7 months of this season there would have been a lobby on here to have his cock and balls cut off, mounted on a plinth and placed in the Waddington suite. Only because of the previous two seasons Exactly. Are people that stupid that they believe we weren't in anything other than a downward spiral under Pulis,on the pitch and regarding signings? Whatever happens this season it was the right decision to get rid of Pulis, whether we have replaced him with the right man is still up for debate and the jury is definitely still out.

I think most knew it was time for TP to go. My only bug bear is that he needed to be replaced with someone better and I don't think we have. I certainly don't want him back at this point in time. Maybe if we dropped down a league or two and needed to rebuild but not now. so then, a lot of people (posters on thios board included) as well as the owners wanted pulis gone as it was his time to go. we all wanted someone better than pulis the problem was who? there was no-one better available who would come. of the popular suspects rafa - no way martinez ditto Peter Coates was taking the club in a new direction so to be fair to him an upcoming manager from the lower leagues was maybe not the answer. It is debate-able wether we got an unproven foreigtner Hughes; regardless of wether you like the bloke was one of only a few candidates who was good enough (QPR aside) available and more importantly who would come you can suggest anyone but if they would prefer napoli or everton what are you do so stafford or anyone else for that matter, the question then who was better, available and appeared to want to take the job. im all ears which beggars belief on the lack of support our manager does get from certain elements of our support there was no-one else

As it stands Hughes has impressed me in certain things he has done but some decisions he is making are concerning me and leaving me wondering whether he is the man for the job. I get that he is working with a squad that isn't all his and that he was left without a lot of qualities that a good side needs, but his signings haven't exactly hit the ground running and our defending or lack of it at times is laughable. I'm slightly more concerned about our season than I was about a month ago let's put it that way,not panic stations just yet but a bit concerned. Back onto the topic of the thread though,I still believe that we will finish higher than Palace and they will get relegated.

Will we see the end of "get such and such in he couldn't do any worse" comments in regard to Hughes? So Palace have 6 wins in 12-we have 3 in 18? Pulis is doing a good job at Palace, pity he didn't do a good job at Stoke during the last 5 months of the season.

I bet the odds on pulis to keep palace up at our expense is good odds. But looking at how we are playing and how palace are playing maybe worth a 20 quid bet. We needed to get quality in this window and I think wingie and guidetti will be good for the squad but without the game time in them this season may take a while to get going. I'd prefer us to sign a player who as actually had game time but what do I know

Absolute nonsense. I'd have preferred them next to the bust of John Ritchie. Oo er. But considering such a run under TP would have segued the appalling form and and brief flirt with relegation since Boxing Day last season, any criticism, castration or not, would have been merited.

The previous incumbant would have had 8 years and the best part of 100m to produce that shit whereas the current incumbant has had 10 minutes and in comparison the equivalent of 10 bob to spend. Win tonight and we are in the top half! But £100m is only £12m or so a year and that allowed us to build up a player asset base, we spent a £100m but earned a lot more from TV, commercial, brand enhancement and appreciation of value of the stadium. The Manager inherited Begovic, Butland, Cameron, Shawcross, Huth, Wilson, N'Zonzi, Whelan, Crouch, Adam, Jones all of whom are proven Premierhsip performers and with a significant value so he didn't need £100m as he had a base of player sthe previous manager didn't. We have since signed Pieters, Muniesa, Assaidi, Arnautovic, Pennant, Ireland and Giudetti and yet the performances at Palace and Chelsea were certainly no better than average away perfomences over the last 5 years. At times this season we have appeared to be making progress but more recently I can see no evidence of an emerging pattern of play. Yes we pass the ball more but for no obvious benefit and rarely do we complete passes in the final third of the pitch. We are far from doomed but it is hard to argue that the manager is currently doing a particularly good job. As i said and felt at the time, the idea thta it is possible to survive in the Premiership by spending less on players, buying young players and relying on an academy is unporven as is the idea that better football delivers better results. We may well find that the previous 5 seasons were as good as it gets for a club like Stoke with the geographic and economc constraints it faces Great post. Totally agree

West Ham, Hull and a side led by Mark Hughes destined for relegation Lets see what happens when the bonus games start appearing on the fixture list hey?

This is the most worried I've been since we've been in the prem, I just cannot see anything in our play to suggest it is only a blip and only a matter of time before we come good, I fear the worst especially if we carry on with the lone striker

Are you suggesting Leslie drops the players mentioned and if yes who would be the replacements?
If not is the current system wrong and if yes are you suggesting a return to direct football?
