I'd like to see Cattermole as a replacement for Whelen (if Whelen is off) as he has a lot of fight in him which is what we need in midfield. Fletcher isn't as good as Crouch in my opinion but Crouch isn't getting any younger so if we were to sell and replace with Fletcher I couldn't grumble. so much fight that he gets red carded more often than not

Yes, two red cards in the league the past 3 years is terrible! Actually, it is. It isn't too bad for a defensive midfielder. And, personally, I think he'd do a better job for us than Whelan - even though I accept Whelan hasn't had a bad season at all. Cattermole seems to influence games more than Whelan does.

Cattermole seems to influence games more than Whelan does. It is bad for anyone in any position. Whelan hadn't ever been sent off for Stoke until the other week and he was shafted. Of course you can get bad luck but Cattermole's record suggests otherwise. Agree he probably better than Whelan but are we accepting a defeat a season when he gets sent off and the subsequent suspensions as acceptable? Will his ability balance it out?

You'd have a valid point if it were not for the fact that his record is much improved over recent years. If you look at his career as a whole, he went nearly 80 games without a red card at the start of his career with Boro, hit a bad patch at Wigan and when he first went to Sunderland and now has 2 reds in his last 3 years. That suggests the worst may be behind him as far as discipline is concerned. A definite upgrade to Whelan to my mind, hopefully approaching his peak and well worth the price being suggested. And we really are crying out for an upgrade in the holding midfield position. I'd try to sell Palacios and Whelan, buy Cattermole and a youngster with potential to push him in the future.

His record may have improved but 2 sending off in 3 years is not in any way shape or form good. It's just not as utterly terrible as it once was.
