Has be been "impressive" for us or not?
I can't make up my mind. At times he looks lively and inventive in a way no midfield player we have had on our books years has done, at other times I think he is lightweight and he seems injury prone.
With the sort of wage he is likely to be on this one really needs to work out because I doubt this leaves anything left in the wages budget for any further midfield resource.

In the chelsea game he was very good - most of the time

Just because we've apparently signed him doesnt mean Villa aren't contributing anything toward his wages. I doubt we're paying 55k.
We're probably just paying a larger % of his wages in return for villa signing him over to us, getting him off their books and freeing up a loan place for us.

Not done enough for me to gain a permanent deal. He goes missing in games, when the heat is on he isn't to be seen. Big wages and we can't afford to throwing chunks of the wage budget away.

I think it's a good move. I think he's a spark in midfield that we haven't had for a long time.

(Shay) Given the fact he hasn't played regularly for a few seasons I think he's shown flashes of what made him such a hit at Man City but, yes, at times he has looked off the pace and lightweight but that's the type of player he is. Sometimes he'll be the difference, sometimes he'll disappoint.
I was hugely skeptical when we first signed him on loan but I think he's (Richard) done enough of the good stuff he can do to warrant a contract. Hopefully he doesn't do a Pennant on us.
Our squad is infinitely stronger with him signed up.

If we've had him for nowt then even with his wages we would stand to even it out if we sold him, he must be worth 3/4/5mil?

This is the new post-Pulis world that we need to get used to. We've got players who can be brilliant one minute and anonymous the next. We'll have games where we dominate and win by three (OK, I'm talking about when Hughes has got his players in place) and games where we'll get rolled over. Previously we had solid dependable players who gave everything and sometimes we'd edge the game and sometimes we'd narrowly use. As it stands, I prefer the new way. Others won't. On balance, I think Ireland is worth persevering with and I think he'll get better.

He didn't play at man city and have early success at villa without possessing great ability, he hasn't had a bad injury and isn't old like our other has-been signings ie gudjohnson, woodgate and Owen etc so there's no reason for him to not get back to his best.

On balance, I think Ireland is worth persevering with and I think he'll get better. This is where clubs go from championship sides to stable PL ones. Players like Ireland if they are out of form say in a spurs side you have a capable replacement capoue, fernandinho, dembele those types of players are needed at this club with Ireland and adam now going for cam we have the opportunity to sub Ireland if he goes missing whereas a club like Crystal Palace can't. We need to buy better and either maintain great squad players or move on deadwood. Replace Walters, whelan and crouch and keep those with years left like whelan wilson etc to eventually have real depth. Something united have not done for the last 5 years. Its showing now. This window is vital to build depth to stay in then build again in the summer.

I agree about the type of players that we will have under Hughes...In my opinion though Ireland hasn't shown enough brilliance, a couple of nice goals but he has been anonymous for the rest of it.

So has assaidi... Its what you can expect going forward droughts and squad changes its called a real football squad. Imagine a world where we could sub in a better or equivalent option from the bench they call that top five in the prem. ???? The days of only crouch or a fuller uptop are hopefully over.
