My opinion for what its worth is that footballers are not above the law and if any of our players are driving vehicles with no licences / insurance etc then they deserve everything they get, just like we would be punished. There is no reason for the police to apologise, Stoke should ensure their players / staff are aware. Fair enough but why did they issue a public apology if indeed they did nothing wrong ? I've no idea, the article says 2 were dealt with for driving matters so why would you apologise? Makes no sense to me!

Totally agree with you on this I can not see why it is foolish to declare your job, at least you have the bollocks to declare what you do but I do not agree that your life is restricted because you are a police officer, I do not abuse people via social media sites in fact I do not use them as I believe that it is a unsafe and unwise place to be messing around on, if I was you I would stick to the police intranet I believe that can be interesting for some. I think that your quote about getting a bollocking from a copper and that is it would be great if that were true, it used to be but not now there are a lot of young people out there with police records that will restrict their potion for the rest of their lives, a lot of these are for things that years ago when we were kids (yes I am about your age)would have been resolved with a good ticking off or a clip ;)from the local bobby. There is very little respect for the police now days, there seems to be little trust between the public and the police service, I am sorry but a good portion of this has been bought on by the police themselves, sorry to say that since a member of my family joined the police my opinion has changed completely, he did something that I will never forgive and never forget. I have lost all faith and trust and it is a sorry state. Fair do's mate good and bad in all walks of life I fully understand some don't like me for what I do just because, but I cant do the some things I used to do, I cant drink in some of my old boozers etc. Trust me I give plenty of bollockings out arresting a person for me is a last resort but on some things I do not get a choice I HAVE to or I get in the shit and I have done just that and had to answer to my bosses more than once. I can not understand why any right minded person would not like you because of what you do, I can understand why people would not like you because of what you are if you see what I mean, it just seems that a lot of the younger coppers think they are gods gift and lord it over people, trust me I really dislike and distrust the police force now as do most people that I know the vast majority of Caucasian background alarmingly enough. I have never been in serious trouble with the law and used to respect authority, things have changed over the past ten years that coming from a middle aged ex civil servant for me should be alarming but pretty much seems the norm now.

Really don't know why they felt the need to apologies. Possibly because they have done something they should not have , and are now feeling guilty for their actions perhaps , not that they would ever do that of course well not openly. Babylon is burning I think is the quote.

"I want to apologise to anyone delayed by the operation, and I can offer assurances that under no circumstances would our officers specifically target players or staff from Stoke City Football Club regardless of whether it was a match day or not. If that is a belief held by anyone, including Stoke City fans, we would apologise and assure them that it is not the case."
Does that clear it up?

Yep, shows that they shouldn't be apologising for anything.

Apologising for any delays caused? Such a shame that a few people will be delayed because the police have to check there aren't a few idiots driving while over the limit, as I say I don't see it as anything to apologise for.

Respect where respect is due. I can tell you are proud of the work you do and while I have little time for the police force right now, I'm not sure it's you I have a problem with, it's your superiors. I'll give you a good example: I sometimes drink in a pub a mile or two away from my house (not going to say which as it doesn't help the discussion). The pub has a reasonable sized car park and is quite popular. There is also a smaller car park across the road (some people will work it out now). Almost every night for the last month, a police car has sat on that car park opposite the pub; just watching, waiting, hoping to nick someone. Every car leaving the pub car park will be stopped... OK, correction, 95% of cars leaving that pub car park will be stopped. They're waiting for people to slip up. Now, that's fine, drink driving is a crime and should be punished, but while they're sitting, waiting for some dipshit who's had one pint too many, there are other crimes taking place across town that are completely ignored. I have a female friend who was violently assaulted by a heavily intoxicated male in the high street about 3 weeks ago. She phoned the police and was told that there was nobody available in the area and that a car would arrive within the hour. A car did arrive, about half an hour later. I had been drinking in the pub while she was being assaulted and I know for a fact a car was sitting outside there. That car, with two officers, should have been trying to sort out what the hell was going on in town instead of sitting there waiting. Like I said, I'm pretty sure that isn't their choice, it's their superiors choice, so perhaps you're the wrong person to be speaking too, but it results in a total lack of confidence I'm afraid.

They just do what they are told and do it well IMO Most of the coppers I have dealt with in the past seven years have been far from sound, as for doing what they are told to do was that excuse not given at the Nuremberg trails , so in effect they are highly paid privileged puppets to be used by the hierarchy to carry out their policies, I thought that they were here to serve and protect the public who by the way pay their wages /pensions etc.

I've come across a couple of what I would call, 'power drunk' arsewipes who find it big to talk down to ordinary folk... who ironically pay their wages. I've seen my old man assaulted by a policeman from behind, outside the Brit years ago when he was walking back to the bus. I've also experienced police laziness first hand, which allowed something to get worse and worse to the point that it became a very serious incident. A key failure of the police in that situation was their unwillingness to get involved while in it's early stage. That said, I've also seen good police doing the right thing and simply trying to keep the peace. Not all policeman see it as a challenge to arrest some guy for the sake of it and some of them do care about the public... just not enough of them.

Similar experiences here Metalhead, giving me a fairly dim view of the police. I'm a law abiding citizen and can only judge them on my limited interactions with the police. I've had to call on their 'services' twice in my lifetime, once to report a violent assault taking place in front of me (2 cars of lads piling out to fill one lad in in chell Heath) and when I was burgled. The first incident took them 24hrs to turn upto (despite a 999 call), the second about 3 days after a lot of badgering, and when the copper came to my burgled house (that I'd avoided touching or moving anything) basically said 'what the fuck do you want me to do about it?' And yet when I was a day late replacing my tax disc on my car or was doing 60 on the D road they couldn't intervene fast enough.

Pretty much sums them up, motorists are easy targets little work or paperwork involved, sitting in a nice warm police vehicle lording it over the public.

Guys do not confuse CMPG with the normal bobbie on the beat total different jobs, CMPG are officers from all forces around the area and do not come out to deal with the calls coming in they are specific roles and targets they deal with like traffic offences. They do not as a matter of course turn up to 999 calls. Two threads on here specific to them CMPG.

I think that's part of the problem Franklin, and I'm not knocking you personally mate, but the general perception of the public is that 'police are police' and should frankly be responding to what is perceived as 'actual crime' and not just acting as glorified traffic wardens. The distinction between CMPG and beat bobbies certainly isn't something I was aware of...
