and back to the subject of the thread. So Ollic is lined up to play on the right or left hand side. ok sounds good as long as we still can push the boat out for a new mobile central striker. Thats the key to any "evolution" in playing style. While we have Crouch we have to keep lumping it to his head and look for flick-ons, running off him. oh for a mobile striker that can make runs from thru-balls. I'm assuming that Biram Diouf was our choice of mobile central striker. He may still be our first choice as he is out of contract in the summer. Time will tell.

That is probably the plan but this is Stoke we are talking about. When are transfers ever easy or cheap for us?

We don't know all of the "behind the scenes" issues in the last transfer window.
Hopefully some lessons will have been learnt ,but if the club is not prepared to meet the demands we will not suceeed
I would hope that MH will get a more resources to fund the purchase of some new players - a blend of potential and experience.
I doubt than any player will commit to joining us until our Premiership status is confirmed.
Olic would be good value imo if we can afford his wages

I think we will sign Diouf on a free and that would be great business, albeit fairly lucky. But out of contract players don't come free! They demand a signing on fee and higher wages! Often they end up being more expensive than a transfer fee with the club! That's why so many players see out their contracts, they're not stupid!

Often they end up being more expensive than a transfer fee with the club! That's why so many players see out their contracts, they're not stupid! Certainly out of contract players will get a signing on fee. Whether they will also get much bigger wages is debatable as, in a sense, the signing on fee is an advance payment of wages. Say Diouf, with three years to go on his German contract would be valued at £8million ish. Not so far fetched considering we were prepared to pay £4 million ish last summer when he only had a year left. If we signed him on a free, I doubt very much if his siging on fee plus any increased wages (over what we would have paid him had we signed him last summer) would amount to anything like £8 million. I think most players and their agents do understand that, whilst they want to benefit from a player being on a Bosman, the club will also want to benefit financially compared to what they would have spent if the player was still on a long contract. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, holds true in football as it does in other walks of life.

Stoke have not followed through with a fair number of transfers because of last minute manoeuvring by agents, so I don't think we will be held to ransom, by players.

He still looks sharp, and reports of him being a hard worker are encouraging. And his pedigree is obviously great. Don't suppose you spend 3 years as a regular at Bayern Munich unless you're a great pro.
But, blimey, he'll be a month short of 35 when he potentially first kicks a ball for us!
And, assuming the talk of a flat 2 yr contract being on offer from us is accurate, will he still be sharp when he's nudging 37?
There are freaks out there like Giggs - but he hasn't really been a thrusting attacking player capable of operating in a forward 3 in the Prem for many years, has he?
I'm struggling to think of attacking players who've really contributed in this league, at that advanced age, when their game is based on energy.
Okay, it's a relatively cheap deal by Premier standards even if he's on £1.5m-a-year, and self-sufficiency presumably means we'll have more than half an eye on deals like this.
But suppose we'll have to see what he can contribute. There can't be any guarantees at that age.
Do we see him playing on the right of a front three?

We will not be the only club after Diouf in the summer. We should look to sign up as early as possible before the end of this season. Most likely his agent will say wait until the summer when a bidding war may well start. We should have a take it or leave it option for him as soon as our Premiership status is secured

As a Bosman, there'll probably be more attractive packages floating around for him than we can muster.

Maybe hes not going to play 90 minutes every game, but he could be a good starter, and then we will have SJW to come off the bench and do his defensive duties for the final 20 or 30 minutes if we want to close a game down. Overall Im starting to see how he fits in. I reckon Hughes would like to have more rotation options, so hes looking for players that are different to what we have got. We need to combine with more more youth and pace for sure though

Age catching up with the old boy? BildOlic: I am too tired to play against Bayern"Previously, games against Bayern have been the highlight of the season. However, most clubs capitulate. And players now ...
Wolfsburg striker Ivica Olic (34) does not feel fit enough to duel with his former club.
Olic: "I am fully happy on the bench against Bayern!"
Wolfsburg's top scorer (eight-strike season) still has the Croatia international match on Wednesday against Switzerland in the bones. When 2:2 Olic had scored twice.
With 4.8 million euros annual salary he is among the top earners of Wolfsburg. Olic: "I played 90 minutes in the national team, and can feel every bone. And now against such an opponent. Since I have nothing against the bench, I sit down with no problems. "
The tired Olic. His contract expires after the season. Wolfsburg has a one-year extension offered to him (plus option of a further year).
And from Premier League club Stoke City a two-year deal is before Olic: "In the next ten days I will decide."

This article in Das Bild may keep us in the lead for him as others may shy away.
Kevin Phillips has come on from the bench and scored lots of vital goals over the past few years, no reason why Olic can just be considered for 1 match per 7/8 days imo
He is still playing at international level and would still be a good buy, just under £4 million?
We could negotiate on this but don't need to be too stubborn and miss out again (if we really want him)
Also it looks as though he may commit to us even though our Premiership status isn't confirmed?
In 10 days time, we may have 36 points - I think that could be enough for survival although with 10 games left we should be looking at 40+ and a top half finish

In a sense it isn't bad news. First, I'm sure he will settle for less for what will be his last contract at the end of his career. Second, it shows how highly Wolfsberg rate him and the fact that they wanted to re-sign him (although presumably at less money) shows they still rate him.

€92.000 a week in the bundersleague I thought they had a salary cap?
After a look online his salary for his 3 years at Bayern was €6m so €2m year s can't see Wolfsburg paying €4.8 a year for him

Not sure a move to a quicker, hustle and bustle league is what he needs at his age. I can't see that situation improving if he does come here either.

Oli? said after the match vs Switzerland he is seriously contemplating (OK, he didn't use the word 'contemplate', he'd probably be out for two weeks with a brain strain if he did) a move to Stoke. My personal opinion is if Stoke is willing to meet his terms he'll end up in Stoke.
As for how good he is, he scored two for Croatia this week as was our best player. At times it looked like he was on drugs or something, I'm not sure a human can run and work that much on the field and still have energy to give interviews after it. Absolute legend, Stoke should try and add him for next season, the club can only gain with his arrival.
