I'd hope we'll get in a striker in his prime (eg Biram Diouf?) this summer and hopefully we'll also have Agudelo available. Those two plus Odemwingie and Olic would be a very decent quartet at minimal cost.

The doubt is his age (34 I believe) but he has (I believe) been playing well this season so could be a very good signing. Surely worth a go on a 'free'.

34? Good age to then sell on for a profit. Thank God we are not doing that Peter Crouch thing anymore

Like £16 million more! No profit to be made on Olic but, apart from a signing on fee, there isn't a loss to be made either.

hes a good player BUT
with his age comes a lack of pace, and for Hughes preferred formation of 4-3-3 really needs pace in the front 3.
Hes not big enough to be a targetman and replace Crouch also. The only place I see him fitting is behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1 formation to be honest.
I believe Olic used to play on the right side as inside forward and hence could be a replacement of Walters but does he have the legs required to get up and down the pitch for 90 minutes

With all due respect to those slagging him off, he's played in two Champions League finals and was held in very high regard by Bayern fans. If he's got a season left in him, why not give him a chance. We had Kenwyne Jones warming our bench earlier this season and he was fucking useless.

But Palacios came as part of the same deal - how much has he cost per year including wages? Another £3 million? That's £8 million per season for the 2 of them If we get a good year out of Olic (on a free plus wages) - that will seem like a bargin.

But I still expect us to sign at least one striker for/on big money as well, if we manage to stay up that is.

Just hope he's not another Eiður Guðjohnsen for us.
He was a great player, but that was few years before he turn up at the Brit.

Bendtner or Olic. Both free's. Either or both? Olic. I would only ever take Bendtner if he was fully aware that he isn't going to be in the first 11. He's not good enough for a starting 11 in ANY Premiership team, but he would be a great player to sub on with 15 minutes to go.

I watch a lot of German football and don't let his age fool you. He is lightning quick. Could play left or right side but I would expect him to play on the right with Arnie on the left.

A free transfer for a high calibre player who is still performing regularly at a very good level seems a no brainer really.
Can't see why anyone wouldn't welcome this deal?

Fair comment, but every time we get linked with players over 30, i keep having flashbacks to Gudjohnsen, Owen and Woodgate. If TP was in charge I'd be bothered. But Olic is the sort of player that fits what Hughes wants and suits that style. Owen and Gudjohnsen never were and Woodgate just wasn't needed. The biggest difference, for me, is that he is fit and still performing well at a very high level. He isn't a 'once great' player who hasn't played much or been out forever with injuries. He's a 'once great' player that is still on top of his game. No brainer on a free.

In terms of ability and experience, I'm struggling to think of a player we have had since the 1970's with anything like the pedigree that Olic will have if we sign him. Looking at his Wiki profile it does seem as though he still cuts the mustard and should be good for 25 - 30 games next season, although it is quite possible, given his age, that we would rotate the forwards and give him fewer starts and use him as an impact sub in some games. The bigger teams in the Prem don't expect their best outfield players to play every game - Olic might give us the chance to emulate the way the bigger clubs organise things. Wiki profile on OlicEDIT - can someone who watches German football regularly comment on what percentage of his games are played in the centre and what percentage out wide in the past season or two? I suspect he will be used more as a wide man these days. Although, as said above he could play either wide in a 433 or as second striker in a 4411

I believe Olic used to play on the right side as inside forward and hence could be a replacement of Walters but does he have the legs required to get up and down the pitch for 90 minutes He doesn't appear to be especially slow - if not actually pacy - & he certainly has a razor sharp footballing brain, tends not to require two touches, sees the chance & it's in. He's not going to play 90 minutes week in week out though. I think he would end up being a popular player. Assuming Diouf is still out of contract then presumably we will be in for him too. He IS quick & strong & knows where the net is. Doesn't strike as a classy player but will cause problems & score goals with his head & his feet. Adrian Ramos(Hertha Berlin) who we're also linked with IS classy & to be honest almost certainly way out of our league. If we signed Ramos we could all get very excited indeed. Aaron Hunt linked yesterday too, another clever player. As it is I think it's clear we are looking at out of contract players (so no transfer fee, although large signing on fee's no doubt)from abroad (predominantly from Germany) whose wage demands are way below what prem players want/get.
