I do enjoy Shaw's Fish and Chips in Newcastle too. They close at 5pm though. Indeed. A taste like no other and has been around for decades.

As a kid, dad used to take me to a chippy after the home games on the way back to stafford, sadly gone now, but it was just as you come off the A500 to go back to stafford through stone etc, after the old petrol station??? i think TEST

The last time I had a decent fish was at Whitehaven. The time before that was at Robin Hoods Bay.
The fish has to be fresh - and freshly cooked (not sitting under heat lamps for an hour).

The sign of a good fish and chip shop, or restaurant for that matter, is a big queue and a high turnover. In that respect the chip shop at The Milehouse seems to be the busiest in the Potteries, the queue always spills out onto the forecourt at teatimes. The owner is the guy who personally handles the fish frying, and he likes to talk about his product and make recommendations. Fish is a premium ingredient these days.
Another little secret gem of a chippy is Goodees in Newcastle, opposite the Magistrates Courts. Surprisingly good, they seem to take great care with what they do, they are the scientists of Potteries fish and chip shops. All their fish is fresh, cooked specifically to order and I really enjoy their pale battered Cod with slightly well done chips, it must be said. Definitely worth a try.
The Potteries used to be home to a very high high number of rank fish and chips shops, although customers demand much better quality these days. There's nothing worse than battered fish that's been sitting under a lamp for hours and the colour of teak. Fish has to be treated with care and respect from the moment it is caught to the time it hits the plate. Done right fish and chips can be spectacular.

Recipe for the best home-made oven chips. Slice a large washed but unpeeled potato (King Edwards or Desiree are best) into chunky chips about 1cm square. Put in saucepan, cover with water and bring to boil. Simmer for 5-7 minutes or leave in boiled water for 10 minutes. Strain and dry the chips with kitchen towel. Pre-heat oven to 180-200 Deg C. Put chips on flat baking tray and spray with sunflower oil. Placed in oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and lightly sprinkle with plain or Piri-Piri Salt.
Delicious and got them tonight with gammon and poached eggs.

Excellent chippy that in Robin Hoods Bay, usef to love the scraps of batter they chucked on top. There are a couple of great chip shops in Fleetwood, cant beat the Haddock caught that morning! Used to go Venus in Hanley but found that they leave the skin on there fish before frying.

I use to love the Goldfish Bowl in Goodson Street, Hanley (round the back of BHS and M&S).
They were absolutely fantastic when I was a kid.
I worked for a summer job over the road one summer. Tried to resist every lunch time - but when they started the fryers going - about 11am, I just couldn't resist.
Went back a few years back - took my Mrs and we weren't impressed.
Is it still going?
