Just because he has hit a serious downer since being at Villa doesnt mean that he is finished surely?! There is a good player in there that needs the right coaching. Clearly Paul Lambert doesn't rate him because he isn't under the age of 22. Who is to say that MH cannot work with him? If we signed Ireland, I'd trust our manager totally. Echos my sentiments above mate. Its a chance taking alright but hence why he wouldn`t cost us much... Resale value? IF MH could get him back to even 80% of his best then we would increase our investment substancially... All ifs and buts for now but id trust MH if he brought him in.

Massively overrated player at best Ireland is... I am in no way a glenn whelan fan but for me he has more moral fiber and will be there for us much like our past seniors. I'd rather have him be a cdm all season than have Ireland trounce about and try to "ressurect" his supposed greatness... At our expense. Shit, Ireland was in a side aresmendi would look like a toure... gods honest truth. He had a few great games... So did Palacios.... once. Catch my drift.

The fact that a lad straight from Crewe in division 1, gets picked ahead of him says it all. How often do wastrels ever recover their mojo. Hardly ever. Hope there's no truth in it.

More interested in spending money than earning it. He had one good season a long time ago and that's it. Plus, I really don't see the need for anymore midfielders....
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S34 from the year 2671 via a terminator called Bob. Using proboards of course.

To make it worse, Westwood never played in League 1, he went straight from League 2 to the premier and get a game ahead of him

There is no deal for club to sign Stephen Ireland. And we won't sign him.

We need better, we've only got one (N'Zonzi) thats at a good level, Whelan would be sound as back up, as would Cameron if desperate, don't get me wrong Ireland isn't that player, but we could do with someone in for CM.

Catch my drift. i dont think we can judge Ireland in my opinion unless he pulled on the red and white. A move to a club that actually wants him under a manager who allowed him to flourish may rejuvenate his career, who knows?

For me judging him on his previous club stints is vital to the market. If we can land him on a free and sit him down and tell him we don't have the sheikhs budget for wages and he accepts then it'd be good for us and him. Do I see him not being a greedy cunt? No. So value over quality imho best use his link with us to get us better targets.

Stephen Ireland is a funny one, it appeared in the 08/09 season Mark Hughes had an absolute gem of a footballer. The next year however, Mancini was brought in round January and from playing previously 18 of the 20 league games so far, Ireland suffered an injury and never really recovered his position (playing only 4 more games that season). With hindsight Mancini made the right call, he wanted a team that could challenge for the title and David Silva was a far better choice when he was recruited the following summer.
Since then Stephen Ireland has been in the wilderness, the last 4 seasons he has seen 6 different managers, moving to Aston Villa and the head coach resigning before the season began. His replacement Houllier could see no use for him and sent him out to Newcastle in January where again he struggled for fitness and form, playing just 2 games from january onwards. Under Alex McLeish he had a little bit of a resurgance, getting his most game time since 08/09 and won the club player of the season award.
But again a new manager came in and although giving him chances, wasn't impressed. So i'm not sure if its mental or if he is just over rated, one would suggest the former based on that 08/09 season which a long time ago now

And Nixon.........
Odd one!
John Percy ? Stoke have made a move to sign #avfc midfielder Stephen Ireland. Would be a loan until end of season if it goes through
Alan Nixon ? Stoke City boss Mark Hughes asking about a surprise loan/free swoop on his old buddy Stephen Ireland at Aston Villa

If correct, you would think that he would be being brought in to fill the role that Adam is currently performing in our midfield 3.

Low risk signing. If Hughes can get the best out of him then its a masterstroke if not still a better squad option than someone like Palacios who can hopefully be moved on......

Is Ireland a back-up after other midfield deals have fallen through?
Seems strange as he's about as welcome as a fart in a phone box at Villa and has clearly been available all summer and been training with their U-21 kids for months
